Chapter 8 Eight

Chapter 8:

A Web of Lies and Broken Promises

Marina was at the beautiful luminous living room of Aiden's mansion with a warm cup of herbal tea well served. The past few days had been nothing but a whirlwind and she still found herself asking herself if all that had happened was real. The finely carved Prosaic furniture, the large windows facing to the well-trimmed garden and the ever-going din from the servants' quarters – all seemed dreamlike.

Aiden had missed most of the week and was only at church sparingly because of his work and his company. Marina had scarcely seen him at work and to her his manners were strictly business like. He remained as a man of few words and she oftentimes wonder what goes on in his mind when it comes to their marriage.

Composing these thoughts in my mind, the ring of the doorbell shocked me to reality as it was very loud and rung throughout the echoing hallways. A minute later a butler who was also announced as Mr. Harrison came into the room."Miss Marina,

you have a visitor," he announced.

Marina's heart raced with surprise. She had not expected any visitor,Who might it be? She nodded, set her cup on the table, and got up. Mr. Harrison opened the door even wider, and to her surprise, Jayden walked into the room.

"Jayden?" she exclaimed, her eyes widening in surprise.

Jayden looked untidy and weary, his usual confident demeanor replaced by a troubled expression. He approached her with hesitant steps, as if unsure of how she would react.

"Marina, we need to talk," he said softly and urgently.

Marina's initial surprise turned into a mix of emotions-anger, pain, and a hint of curiosity. She gestured for him to take a seat, and they both settled on the comfortable sofa.

"Why have you come here, Jayden?" Marina asked, her tone cautious.

Jayden ran a hand through his tousled hair, his eyes filled with regret. Hey Marina, I regret making a big mistake. I realize now that leaving you at the altar was a terrible decision on my part. I admit that I was in the wrong, and I understand that I caused you a lot of pain. But please, hear me out."

Marina crossed her arms, her expression hardening. "You think an apology can erase what you did? You disgraced me in front of everyone. You broke my trust."

Jayden's posture sagged, and his gaze fell to his hands. "I understand, and I apologize. However, there's additional information to the situation that you're not aware of.Amira...she manipulated me. She made me believe things about you that weren't true."

Marina's eyes narrowed. "Amira? What are you talking about?"

Jayden sighed, his voice trembling Amira informed me that you were solely interested in my family's wealth. She instilled doubts in my thoughts, convincing me that you were disloyal. I foolishly trusted her and now I understand that. But I want to make things right, Marina. I want you back."

Marina felt a surge of anger at Amira's name. She had always suspected that Amira had evil intentions, but to hear that she had actively destroyed her relationship with Jayden was even more annoying. Yet, she couldn't ignore the hurt and betrayal she felt towards Jayden for believing Amira's lies.

"It's too late, Jayden," Marina said, her voice firm. "I'm married to Aiden now."

Jayden's eyes flashed with desperation. "That marriage is a sham, Marina. You don't love him. You're just using him as a way out."

Marina stood up, folding her hands "You have no authority to determine what is true and what is not. You forfeited that privilege when you abandoned me on our wedding day. "Now, please leave."

The expression on Jayden's face seemed to show his desire to argue, but upon seeing the determination in Marina's eyes, he realized it would be futile. He rose from his seat with a sense of resignation.

"I'm sorry, Marina. I truly am He slowly whispered, ''I hope one day you can forgive me.'' Then, they watched him get up and leave the room.

Marina looked at him as he walked out, her chest tight with the many feelings that assailed her. She was relieved but at the same time she feels the deep pain of being betrayed. As the door shut, and Jayden left, she attempted to take a full breath in, and get herself together.

At this beautiful moment when she was preparing to go back to her tea, her phone rang. She took it and read a message, 'Hey, it's Amira.' We need to talk. – Amira"*

Marina's jaw clenched. The audacity of Amira to reach out after everything she had done was infuriating. But curiosity got the better of her. Marina sat down and tried to think of why it was so important for Amira to destroy her.

Marina returned to the modern coffee shop on 5th Avenue an hour later. Cups of steaming black coffee and low tones of people's voices dominated the atmosphere. She could immediately see Amira sitting in a corner with a plate of food and a glass of wine and dressed as if she were ready to host a fashion show in a designer dress and well done hair.

Marina fumed and hurried to the table to meet him her emotions boiling with anger and determination. Finally, she sighed, looked up and smiled at somebody, there was satisfaction in her smile.

"Marina, I glad you came," Amira twitted nastily as the music pumped out from every angle.

caught in her throat. Amira said, her tone saccharine sweet.

Marina sat down, her gaze unwavering. "What do you want, Amira?"

Amira leaned back in her chair, her smile never wavering. "I wanted to clear the air between us. I know you must hate me, but I had my reasons."

Marina's eyes narrowed. "Reasons? You mean lies and manipulation?"

Amira's smile faltered for a moment before she composed herself"I took the necessary actions to achieve my goals."Jayden was never meant for you. He belongs with someone who understands his world, his ambitions."

Marina's anger flared. "You ruined my relationship for your own selfish desires. You made Jayden believe terrible things about me."

Amira shrugged, her expression cold. "Jayden was weak. He was easily swayed. You should be grateful I revealed his true nature before it was too late."

Under the table, Marina's hands balled into fists. "You don't have the authority to determine what's best for me or anyone else. You are responsible for so much pain and hardship, and for what purpose? To satisfy your own greed?"

Amira's eyes glinted with malice. "You believe you're so morally upright, Marina. However, you're simply an underprivileged girl striving to assimilate into a world that isn't meant for you."

Marina's heart pounded with a combination of fury and determination. "I may lack your riches and connections, but I possess something you will never comprehend-honesty and the insight to see past individuals like you."

Amira's grin transformed into a contemptuous expression. "Enjoy your little victory, Marina.

". But keep in mind, my work is unfinished. Aiden will eventually uncover your true self, and when that happens, I'll be there to support you through the aftermath."

Marina stood up, her gaze filled with resolve. "I refuse to allow you to further ruin my life. Keep your distance from me and my husband, Amira."

With those words, Marina turned and exited the café, her heart racing with a combination of relief and lingering anger. She understood that Amira wouldn't give up easily, but she was resolute in safeguarding her new life, no matter what.

On her return to Aiden's property, Marina contemplated her partner. Even though there was a cold vibe and emotional detachment between them, she couldn't deny the solace she experienced in his company. She knew she had to have a conversation with him, to comprehend their current standing and the possibilities for their future together.

Upon reaching the mansion, Marina discovered Aiden in his study, fully absorbed in his paperwork. She softly knocked on the door, and he looked up, his expression becoming gentler as he saw her.

"Marina," he said hello, his voice revealing a touch of astonishment and affection. "Is everything all right?"

Marina took a deep breath and stepped into the room. "We need to talk, Aiden."

Aiden set his papers aside and gestured for her to sit. "Of course. What's on your mind?"

Marina sat down, her heart racing. "It's about Jayden and Amira. They won't leave us alone. Jayden came to see me today, and Amira...she sent me a message. She wanted to meet."

Aiden's expression darkened. "What did they want?"

"Jayden apologized, said he was manipulated by Amira. But it's too late for apologies. And Amira...she's not done causing trouble. Marina shared, her voice filled with emotion, "She made a threat to destroy our marriage."

Aiden's jaw clenched and his eyes showed a strong determination as he responded to Marina, "I won't allow anyone to harm you."Not Jayden, not Amira. You have my word."

Marina felt a surge of gratitude and relief at his words. Despite the uncertainty and the challenges ahead, she knew she wasn't alone. They had the ability to confront anything that crossed their path.

Sitting side by side, Marina felt a glimmer of hope as they shared a newfound sense of unity. Their marriage had started in an unusual way, but there was a possibility, however slight, that it could evolve into something authentic and long-lasting.
