Chapter 7: Aiden's Absence

The sunrise was delicate as the young woman opened her eyes in Aiden's mansion; the curtains of the bedroom were thin. She clenched her hands as she felt the large bed seemed to be more void without him by her side. From the time they got married, Aiden had been busy with work getting to work early and coming home late, rarely making time for them to talk.

She yawned, got up from the bed, and proceeded to the kitchen. The household staff greeted her and she nodded in response, attempting to hide her loneliness. She missed the simplicity of her life before all the grandeur and complexity of marrying Aiden Wellington.

After a quiet breakfast, Marina decided to explore the mansion more. The mansion corridors blended elegance and classic style, aimed at the representatives of the higher stratum, and every element had been designed. She walked aimlessly, looking at the paintings and at the snazzy decorations on the wall; and to her surprise a fabulous library was on the way.

The walls of the chamber were filled with bookshelves, as for the smell in the room, the odor of aged paper mainly prevailed. Marina was excited looking at the titles of the books. Books had saved her in many ways, giving her a chance to think of something else when life became unbearable. She picked a book from one of the shelves, sat in an armchair beside the window, and began reading the fiction.

Finally, some hours passed and Marina, who was engrossed in reading the book did not even hear a soft knock on the door. Mr. Harrison, Aiden's butler, coughed lightly to get her attention.

"Miss Marina, there is a delivery for you," he said, holding a beautifully wrapped box.

Marina looked up, slightly startled, and smiled. "Thank you, Mr. Harrison. You can leave it here."

He placed the box on the table beside her and left the room. Marina set her book aside and opened the box. Inside, she found a note on top of an exquisite silk scarf. The note was from Aiden.

*Marina, I'm sorry I've been so busy. I hope this small gift makes you smile. -Aiden

Her heart softened at the gesture. He still remembered her despite being preoccupied. Wrapping the scarf around her neck, she felt its smooth texture against her skin and smiled.

That evening with prime intention to spend some quality time with Aiden, Marina thought of cooking an exotic dinner for him. Cooking was something she enjoyed and probably it would be a nice gesture to welcome him home. To do this she had to involve the chef, much to her surprise the chef was willing to help her. For the next several hours, they engaged in cooking and the kitchen was filled with mouth-watering fragrances.

When the clock was a few minutes to eight, Marina served meals in the dining room, positioning the dishes with thoughtfulness. She lit a few candles putting the room into a warm and romantic ambiance. Then she waited. And waited. The food became cold, and the candles were almost cut off, but Aiden did not arrive back home.

At long last, at midnight, Marina noticed the front door being opened. Rushing to the entrance of the mansion, she felt a flurry of excitement and nervousness as her heart raced. Aiden entered, appearing weary, with his tie undone and his hair a little messy.

"Aiden," Marina called softly.

He looked up, surprised to see her still awake. "Marina, you're still up? You should be sleeping."

She expressed her disappointment, "I wanted to have dinner with you. I made something special."

Aiden's demeanor became gentler as he approached her and gently held her face in his hands. "I apologize, Marina. I didn't intend to keep you waiting. Work has been... overwhelming."

She leaned into his touch, savoring the brief moment of closeness. "I understand, but we need time together too, Aiden."

He sighed, pulling her into a hug. "I know. I will make it up to you, I promise."

They spent some time in solidarity standing there and embracing, without any words, trying to find comfort in that gesture. They considered that they should go and warm it up at a later time and have dinner as it was getting late. Marina nodded, happy to be spending what time they have together, even though it's not like she had imagined.

As they sat with their food on the dining table discussing and enjoying their meal, Marina felt a ray of hope. Perhaps the circumstances would improve. Perhaps, they can be able to compromise and balance their duties and affection.

---

The following morning, Marina awoke with a new determination to achieve her goals and objectives. She couldn't wait for Aiden to show her some attention, she had to do something for herself. She needed to fine her own purpose, define her mission in this new life and look for her role in this world. She decided to pay a visit to Aiden's company Wellington Enterprises to determine how she could assist Aiden there.

When she reached the magnificent complex corporate building that was located in downtown LA, she was excited and tensed up at the same time. The receptionist welcomed her cordially and let Aiden know that she had arrived. In a few minutes, she was led to Aiden's office, which was located at the highest point in the building.

Aiden lifted his head from his desk and glanced up at her with a hint of confusion. "Wow, Marina, what are you doing here?"

"I wanted to visit your workplace she said smiling." "And maybe find a way to be useful."

Aiden's expression softened, and he stood up, walking over to her. "I appreciate that, Marina. But this place... it's complicated."

"I'm sure it is," she answered, "but I want to know it, I want to be in this your world, Aiden."

He studied her for a moment, then nodded. "Alright. Let's start with a tour."

Aiden gave her a tour of the office, presenting his team and providing details about the different facets of the business. Marina paid close attention, posed inquiries, and absorbed everything. As he discussed the company he had established, she could perceive the sense of pride in Aiden's eyes.

By the end of the day, Marina felt more connected to Aiden's world. She realized that she could only understand him if she tried to grasp the nature of his work. It might be true that they owed their coming together to fate, but what she had in mind was to make her marriage a success.

As they drove back home, Marina held Aiden's hand. "Thank you for today. It means a lot to me."

Aiden held her hand and gave her a slight smile as he wrapped his other arm around her shoulders. "I should be thanking you, Marina. You're making an effort, and I appreciate it. "

She rested her head on his shoulder and understood, she was in a state of satisfaction. They still had a lot of work ahead of them, yet for the first time Marina had a sense that she was fighting side by side with Aiden. Whatever difficult situations they were going to meet, she was quite sure that they would face them as a team.
