Chapter 3 Taking the Wrong Medicine

The Next Day

When Eva woke up, she realized that she had caught a slight cold. She took cold medicine from the drawer and poured a cup of warm water.

Just as she tossed the pill into her mouth, something crossed her mind, and her face changed. She rushed to the bathroom and quickly spat out the pill.

She leaned over the sink, rinsing her mouth, getting rid of the bitter taste she had swallowed.

"What's wrong? Why are you so flustered? Are you feeling unwell?"

A cool male voice suddenly sounded at the door, startling Eva. She looked at him.

As soon as their eyes met, Eva quickly looked away. After calming herself down, she said, "It's nothing, I just took the wrong medicine."

With that, she wiped the water stains off her lips, stood up, and left the bathroom.

Adrian turned around and watched her leaving, his brows furrowing slightly.

He felt something was off ever since he came back last night. After breakfast, the couple left together.

Adrian glanced at Eva's slightly pale face and asked, "Do you want to ride in my car?"

Eva had gotten caught in the rain yesterday and wasn't feeling well after waking up today. She was about to nod when Adrian's phone rang.

He glanced down and saw Vivian's name on the caller ID.

Before he could avoid her call, Eva had already walked away on her own. Although they were a married couple, they weren't intimate, so Eva didn't usually listen to Adrian's phone calls.

Their relationship had always been like this. However, seeing Eva actively avoid the call today pricked Adrian's heart.

But the feeling vanished in an instant, and he answered the call. Eva observed him from a distance.

From his expression, she could already guess who the caller was.

He looked gentle, a demeanor she had never seen from him before. She took a deep breath, suppressing her feelings of jealousy, and took out her phone as she headed towards the garage.

Five minutes later, Adrian finished the call and turned around, only to find that Eva had already left.

At the same time, he received a text message. "I have to rush to the office, so I'll leave first."

Adrian stared at the message with a dark gaze. Despite feeling unwell, Eva forced herself to go to the office.

As soon as she entered, she sat down on her office chair and leaned against the desk. Her head was throbbing. But now that she was pregnant, she couldn't take any medication indiscriminately.

In fact, she wasn't sure what she was thinking at the moment. According to common sense, their marriage was a sham.

Even though she was pregnant, Granny Blackwood was probably the only one who would be genuinely happy for her. The others wouldn't even welcome this child, especially not Adrian.

Yesterday, after receiving the pregnancy report, she had thought that perhaps Adrian would accept the child, and maybe their marriage could further develop. But then she found out that Vivian had returned, and his emotions towards Vivian remained unchanged.

If he found out, his first reaction would probably be to suggest an abortion, as the child would affect his chances of marrying Vivian.

Reason told her she should abort the child soon, or else she might not even have a trace of dignity left by the end of it.

"Eva." A soft feminine voice sounded, and Eva snapped back to reality, raising her head to see her assistant, Jenny Hall.

Eva straightened herself and greeted her with a standard smile. "Good morning, you're here."

However, Jenny didn't smile back. Instead, she looked at Eva with concern. "Eva, you don't look good. Are you feeling unwell?"

Upon hearing this, Eva hesitated for a moment and shook her head. "I'm fine, I just didn't sleep well last night."

"Are you sure?" Jenny seemed unconvinced. "Your complexion is really pale. Are you really okay? Maybe you should take a leave and go to the hospital."

"I'm really fine. Did you finish summarizing the work from yesterday?" In just a few sentences, they had already transitioned to work.

Jenny had no choice but to bring over the information she had organized and pour a cup of hot water for Eva.

"Since you don't want to go to the hospital, you should drink more hot water," Jenny said.

Jenny was the assistant Eva had hired, and she was diligent in her work, but they had no personal interaction beyond work.

Eva was surprised by Jenny's concern for her.

Feeling the warmth in her heart, Eva took a few sips of the hot water.

She had felt a bit cold earlier, but after drinking some hot water, Eva finally felt much more comfortable.

However, Jenny still looked worried as she said, "Eva, why don't you let me handle today's report? You can take a break in the office."

Eva shook her head and replied, "No need, I can handle it myself."

She didn't want to be too fussy about feeling unwell.

If there was a slight problem, she could rest and let someone else take over her work.

But in the long run, she would become lazy. What would she do if no one helped her when she wasn't feeling well?

Eva organized the documents on her desk and then headed to Adrian's office.

Her office was a bit far from Adrian's, which was usually not a problem, but today Eva felt a bit tired.

She gently knocked on the door.

"Come in," a cold and deep male voice came from inside the room, and Eva pushed the door open.

After entering, Eva noticed another figure in the office.

Vivian's slender waist was accentuated by her white dress, and her waist-length hair softly draped by her side. In the sunlight coming through the floor-to-ceiling window, Vivian appeared elegant and lively.

As soon as Eva recognized who it was, she froze.

"Eva, you're here," Vivian said with a smile and walked towards her. Before Eva had a chance to react, Vivian hugged her.

Eva's body stiffened even more, and her gaze met Adrian's dark eyes through Vivian's shoulder.

The man leaned against his desk, his eyes fixed on her with a profound gaze, his thoughts unclear.

While Eva was still startled, Vivian let go.

"I heard everything from Adrian. I'm sorry for what you've been through," Vivian's face showed a compassionate expression. "If you need any help, you must let me know."

Upon hearing this, Eva paused. Adrian had told Vivian everything?

But she quickly realized that he couldn't hide it, as their marriage had always attracted attention.

Since he couldn't hide it, she indeed had to clarify everything, especially because Vivian had also shown her kindness.

Eva suppressed the bitterness in her heart and forced a smile on her pale lips.

"Thank you. When did you come back?"

"I arrived yesterday," Vivian replied.

So, Vivian had just returned, and Adrian had gone to see her. She was truly the person he valued the most.

"By the way, why do you look unwell? Are you feeling sick?" Vivian suddenly asked.

Upon hearing this, Adrian, who had been nonchalantly leaning at his desk, lifted his gaze and carefully examined Eva. His brows furrowed as he observed her.

"Because of getting caught in the rain last night."

"Got caught in the rain?" Vivian looked puzzled.

Eva sighed. She was about to explain when she heard Adrian's cold voice say, "Why are you forcing yourself if you're feeling unwell? The company doesn't rely on you alone. Go home and rest."

Upon hearing his words, Vivian instinctively glanced at Adrian.

Why did he suddenly look angry?
