Chapter 5 THE PROPOSAL.

CHAPTER 5: THE PROPOSAL.

The door unlocked and swung open, startling Lilly. She stood up abruptly to see who it was. She was relieved when she saw it was Trevor. Gazing at Trevor, Lilly observed his demeanor was gloomy. Well, more like he was pissed, about something.

"You seem jumpy. Did I startle you?" Trevor asked Lilly as he walked towards her.

"Kinda. I'm still a bit shaken up from the events of the previous night I guess." Lilly replied.

"Well, you're safe here. You need not be," Trevor said sighing as he sat down on the sectional couch, carelessly flinging his car keys unto the center table. Lilly also took her sit, on the three seater couch not close to Trevor.

"I wasn't expecting to still find you here when I returned. I left you a note and an envelope. Did you not find them?" Trevor enquired.

"Yeah, I did. But I don't have where to go or who to turn to. So you can keep your money," Lilly replied. Trevor chuckled. Once again, he noticed how she didn't appreciate him for his kind gesture, but he shrugged it off like it was nothing. He had more pressing things on his mind.

"Well, you may have to find a place pretty soon to move into," Trevor said.

"Why?" Lilly asked, with a concerned look on her face.

"Apparently, I'm meant to get married to someone I don't love, or risk losing everything. I'll have to relinquish my position as the CEO of my company, and other stuff." Trevor replied, smiling softly.

"Wait, you mean your parents gave you such an ultimatum?" Lilly asked, perplexed.

"Yup. Well, my dad in particular is the one who did," Trevor replied.

"Hmm." Lilly sighed, not knowing what to say in response to the situation. But she pondered upon the situation.

"It's been a long day. I'll go freshen up." Trevor stood up yawning as he stretched himself and began walking upstairs.

"By the way, you had a visitor. Some lady claiming to be your girlfriend, a Sabrina Banks. Do you know her?" Lilly revealed.

Trevor sighed frustratedly, halting his movement. "Why won't she just depart from my life for good for Christ's sake? That's who I am being forced to marry." Trevor was fed up.

"Oh wow!" Lilly finally understood why Sabrina felt entitled and was arrogant. "That girl sure is a piece of work." Lilly made sure to express how she felt about Sabrina.

"No kidding!" Trevor affirmed, scoffing, as he continued to his room. Lilly sat in the Living room deep in her thoughts.

Detective Gordon and his partner walked into the interrogation room, where the man who tried assaulting Lilly was kept, handcuffed. The detectives took their seat, on the other side of the table.

They placed a file on the table. They got the man's information from their database having ran his finger print, since he had no means of identification on him.

"Spencer John. That's your name right?" Detective Gordon's partner, Reid, questioned as he flipped open the file. The man maintained silence.

"So, let's cut to the chase. Why were you after that young lady, Lilly?" Reid questioned. Spencer stared blankly at the detectives.

"You're gonna talk to me Spencer, because you're not going anywhere." Reid threatened. It made Spencer to smirk derogatorily.

Gordon watched quietly as the assailant showed disregard to them. Then he cut into the interrogation.

"How did a man who wanted to be in the navy reserve, passionate about serving your country, end up taking such an ignoble path? Hmm?" Gordon asked in an attempt to trigger a response.

Gordon could see the smirk on his face wipe off gradually. So Gordon pressed on.

"Did you have a hard time trying to get in? Were the requirements too tough for you to get in, and so you chose another way, since you had the skills, to become profitable in a country that seems unfair for the average. Huh?"

Spencer glared wickedly at Gordon.

"I'm quite sure your mum is proud of you in her grave right now." Gordon added, pissing Spencer off.

"Keep my mother out of your fucking mouth!" Spencer said angrily. "Why were you after the girl?" Gordon yelled out, reiterating his partner's question.

Spencer laughed out mockingly as the detectives watched him keenly. "You fucking think you can keep me here? I'll be outta here in no time. And until then, I'm saying nothing. And I'll be needing my phone call." Spencer relaxed into the chair he sat on.

Gordon knew questioning him at this point would be a waste of time, so he stood up and left. His partner followed suit, as the other officers took Spencer back to his cell.

"It's obvious Spencer was working for someone in high places, ergo his assurance of leaving here soon." Gordon began brainstorming with his partner.

"Obviously. But who has the power to pull such strings even in the police department?" Reid reasoned.

"Well, there are a ton of folks who could do that. But the question is, why Lilly? And who in such high places would want her dead?" Detective Gordon asked, but rhetorically.

"Dude, that's messed up. So what are you going to do?" Lincoln asked.

"Man, this is so messed up." Bobby added. "Mmm, tell me about it." Trevor scoffed as he took a shot of tequila.

It was finally weekend, and Trevor was at his usual club with his friends, hanging out, unwinding from the demanding week he has had, as he made known his plight to his friends. But none of them had anything useful to say, as they were half way drunk.

Like Archimedes, an idea suddenly flashed in Trevor's head. "Holy shit!" Trevor exclaimed.

"I gotta go." Trevor didn't gulp another shot of tequila as expected.

"Leaving already man?" Bobby said unhappily.

"We'll catch up some other time." Trevor said hurrying out. He rushed back to his apartment and found Lilly in the living room watching TV as she ate a snack.

"You're back early." Lilly said as he walked in.

"Yeah. I had to." Trevor said as he sat down in the living room.

"Uh, Lilly, there's something I'd like to discuss with you." Trevor called her attention. Lilly furrowed her brow, wondering.

"Okay. What is it?" She asked, curious to know.

"Let's get married." Trevor proposed. Lilly's eyes widened in shock at what she just heard.
