Chapter 8 Invited!

Lyka's eyes opened to darkness. For one insane moment, she thought she would find Damien beside her, holding her hand while watching her sleep. But her heart sank when she didn't see Damien by her side.

She was just dreaming. Right. Stupid. Because if she were awake, she wouldn't allow Damien to touch her hand.

"Looks like my ninja moves woke up my dear friend," Lina greeted her with a laugh.

"You and your ninja moves."

"Oh, really? Don't deny it. You're just pretending. Damien's body must be sore because of you. He spent three hours guarding you like a watchdog because of your tight grip on his hand."

"That's not true!" She defended herself, her eyes widening. Her chest tightened. So, that wasn't a dream?

"That you were snoring?"

"That I held that monster's hand! Disgusting! His behavior is despicable!"

"You looked peaceful holding his hand though," Lina chuckled.

"I was probably dreaming of something else," she retorted.

"Why are you blushing?" Lina teased.

"Can you please stop? I'm furious with that man! I can't forgive him for calling me a slut. He speaks so harshly; he quickly judges people! He's the real opportunist!"

Lina's smile slowly disappeared as she observed the anger on Lyka's face. Her attention was suddenly captured by the ringing of her cellphone. "Hello, Damien..."

Lyka stared at her.

"Yeah, she's awake. Okay, sure, I'll do it," Lina replied gently. She hung up the phone and turned to Lyka.

"He called you?"

Lina nodded. "He took my phone number. He asked me to keep an eye on you. Lyka, I think he wants that child in your womb."

"I'm scared of him, Li."

"I am too. But he probably wouldn't hurt the mother of his child, right?"

"What if he takes my child away?"

Lina fell silent. Like Lyka, she was uncertain about what she would do if that happened. Their conversation was interrupted by a knock on the door from some of their neighbors.

"There's a welcome party for the president of our homeowners' association's child this coming weekend, and we were hoping you could attend." Larene handed her the invitation with a smile.

"Why are we suddenly invited?" Lina interjected.

"Why not? You're from here, and everyone's invited."

Lina frowned. They knew that they were being lied to. Only selected people were invited to social parties in their area. The president wasn't friendly to everyone.

"Okay, we'll try to come," she replied with a forced smile.

"That's wonderful! We'll be expecting you!"

They seemed to know the reason for the sudden invitation. They caught a glimpse of Damien's Ferrari. Lina's friend's eyes sparkled even more with annoyance. She nudged her to keep her from commenting, fearing that the conversation would prolong.
