Chapter 4 A Chef For His Lover

The corridor wasn't spacious. Now that Colton bumped into me here, he froze for a moment. He scratched the back of his head and said awkwardly, "Miss Happer, I came to check on Olivia."

It was said that if a woman wanted to know whether a man took her seriously or not, she just needed to observe how his friends behaved towards her.

Colton was a good friend of Elliott's. Judging by how he looked at me and spoke, I didn't need anyone to tell me that he didn't think of me as his friend's wife. He didn't address me as Mrs. Crawford or Gianna. He still stuck to calling me Miss Happer.

It was a polite, but distant address.

Anyway, that was the least of my worries now. It was no fault of Colton's that his friend didn't give a damn about me. With a forced smile, I made way for him and said, "Okay, they are waiting for you."

Tonight was one of the many times when I envied Olivia. All she had to do was sulk or shed a few tears, and Elliott would come running to her, bringing his friends or whoever could help along. However, nothing I did ever worked.

Instead of going to sleep when I returned to the bedroom, I took out a matching pair of shirt and pants that Elliott had never worn. Then I went downstairs.

Colton was a certified doctor. In no time, he was done checking Olivia's vitals and prescribing some drugs.

Halfway down the staircase, he saw me standing in the living room. He flashed me an awkward smile and said, "It's already midnight. Miss Happer, aren't you going to bed?"

"Sleep can wait." I held out the clothes to him and said, "Your clothes are soaking wet. It's still raining outside. Change into these so you don't catch a cold."

Colton's jaw dropped as he looked at the clothes. It was obvious he didn't expect such a kind gesture from me. After a few seconds, he smiled and said politely, "No, thanks. I rarely fall sick. It doesn't matter if I wear these until I get back home."

Unwilling to take no for an answer, I put the clothes in his hand and pressed on. "Elliott has never worn them before. You two are about the same size. I already brought them out, so make do with them."

With that, I went upstairs to my bedroom.

My kind gesture wasn't out of the goodness of my heart. Colton was a renowned surgeon, who only operated on those that could afford his services. But when my grandmother was ill, he treated her because of the Crawford family's intervention. I felt indebted to him ever since. Now, I saw those dry clothes as a payback for his help.

The rest of the night was uneventful.

The morning sun rose early and shone brightly as if it hadn't rained cats and dogs the previous night. The scent of wet soil permeated the fresh air. I got up early like always. When I went downstairs after washing up, I heard some noise coming from the kitchen.

I tiptoed to the door of the kitchen, only to find Olivia standing close to Elliott, who was wearing a black apron. He was making scrambled eggs so skillfully. It was as if he was an entirely different person. Instead of the ice king that I knew, this man was a gentle husband.

Olivia kept looking at him as if she wanted to have him for breakfast, not the damn eggs he was making. It seemed she was recovering well. Her cheeks were slightly red and her small face was bright, making her look more attractive.

"Elliott, I want crispy scrambled eggs." Olivia picked a strawberry, put it into his mouth, and continued, "But don't let it get burnt, otherwise it will have a bitter taste."

Elliott smiled at her as he chewed the strawberry. Although he didn't say anything, his eyes gleamed with intense affection.

They were a perfect match!

Love was in the air. However, I wasn't breathing the same air.

"They are a perfect match, aren't they?" A male voice suddenly came from behind. I was stunned. When I turned around, I found that it was Colton. Only now did it dawn on me that Elliott couldn't have allowed his doctor friend to leave last night when Olivia had a high fever.

"Good morning," I greeted him with a smile and looked at him. He was wearing the clothes that I gave him last night.

Noticing my gaze, he raised his eyebrows and uttered, "These clothes fit me well. Thank you."

"Don't mention it," I said, shaking my head. This pair of clothes were part of the many I got for Elliott. But he never touched them, let alone wore them out.

Once Olivia heard our voices, she turned around and uttered, "Good morning, Gianna and Colton. I hope you slept well. Anyway, Elliott made scrambled eggs. Come and eat with us!"

She sounded like the hostess of this house.

"Thanks, but no. I still have some bread and milk in the fridge. I'll make do with that. By the way, you should have some milk. It will help you make a quick recovery," I said, suppressing the anger that was brewing inside of me.

Over my dead body would I accept a breakfast invitation from another woman in my matrimonial home! I was legally married to Elliott. My name and his were on the deed for the house.

Even though I was obedient to Elliott and avoided offending him, I couldn't just sit back and let Olivia exercise power over me under this roof.
