Chapter 6 Beggarly Father-in-Law

In the afternoon, Brylee was putting together an interview draft on her work computer when her phone suddenly rang. It was a strange number.

As soon as she answered the phone, Nicole's voice wafted into her ear. "Am I speaking to Brylee?"

Brylee sighed and rubbed her forehead. She was just about to hang up when Nicole said viciously, "Your wretched father came to the Harrison Corporation to cause a scene. You'd better come to take him away. Otherwise, I'll call the cops on him!"

Brylee's heart skipped a beat. She was just about to ask the necessary questions when she heard the disconnected tone. She sprang to her feet and grabbed her bag.

In haste, she took a taxi to the Harrison Corporation.

The building of the Harrison Corporation was towering. The sun glistened on the glass surface, sending radiation to the smaller buildings close by.

"Good day, Ms. Pearson, you don't have an appointment today. Why are you here?" the receptionist asked in confusion as soon as Brylee rushed into the company, looking a little disheveled.

Brylee scratched her head, not knowing what to say.

She was a known face here because she previously came here for several interviews. During those times, she went through due process.

The receptionist had no idea that Brylee was married to Davies.

It was no use revealing that secret now that their marriage would come to an end very soon.

Brylee was at a loss for what to say. Just as she tried to come up with something, she caught a glimpse of a familiar figure. She raised her hand and shouted, "Vincent!"

The receptionist's eyes widened a little as she stared at Brylee.

Vincent was super helpful. He put a call through to Davies before allowing Brylee in.

As Brylee waited for the elevator to arrive, something strange occurred to her.

It was hard for her to gain entry into the company due to strict protocols. How then did her father get in?

Meanwhile, Davies was just coming out of the conference room. He looked grim as he wheeled himself down the corridor. His aura made the entire place cold.

The employees present stared at his cold back and whispered to each other.

"Who is that man? Why did he come here to ask Mr. Harrison for money?"

"I used to think Mr. Harrison was just misunderstood, but he really is a scary person. Gosh! He looks so displeased. It doesn't seem like he owes that man money."

"Of course no! How can a man who has all the wealth he could ever need at his fingertips be indebted to a pauper? Impossible!"

Davies returned to his office only to find Nicole sitting on the edge of his desk and taking a selfie.

Two bodyguards stood close by with their hands behind their backs. In the middle, a middle-aged man looked a mess as he shook with trepidation.

When Nicole saw Davies, she put her phone away and rushed to him. She pointed at the middle-aged man and asked, "Look at that man. He scared me half to death when he barged into your office just now."

The middle-aged man turned around. He ran to Davies and fell at his feet within seconds.

"My dear son-in-law, I have been waiting for you. You can't just see me suffering and do nothing. You should help me. Lend me ten million dollars. Only ten million. I promise not to bother you again."

"Aah!" Nicole screamed and ran behind Davies, feigning fear.

The bodyguards quickly grabbed the disheveled man and pulled him back.

The ice in Davies' expression became colder. He leaned back on his wheelchair and queried, "Arthur, you must think that I'm stupid, don't you? And you are always trying to get money from me because you are my wife's father, isn't that right?"

"No... No, I don't think that you are stupid. I only come to you for help because I have no one else to turn to. The loan sharks are on my neck. They follow me everywhere. They have threatened to kill me if I don't pay the debt. Please don't let me die." It was hard for Arthur Pearson to get any closer to Davies. However, he used all his might to lean forward. There was a cut on a corner of his lips. He also had bruises on his face and dark circles under his eyes. His clothes had patches of dirt and blood on them.

Nonetheless, Davies turned a deaf ear to him. He moved to the water dispenser and poured himself a glass of water. He took a sip casually.

Arthur's eyes became misty. He continued in a pitiful voice, "I know that I deserve all this suffering. But you have to help me. If the word gets out that your father-in-law was involved with loan sharks, it will be a dent in your family's image. I trust you don't want that to happen. Just give me the money. Ten million is chicken feed for you."

"Are you even listening to yourself?" Davies barked. He lowered his eyes and stared at the surface of the water. He had a poker face, so it was hard to tell if he was angry or just indifferent. "Have you forgotten what you said when I helped you pay off the debt of two million dollars two months ago?"
