Chapter 4 Indirect Taunting

Brylee was past caring about Davies' opinion at this point. Her mind was set on leaving him.

She turned to look at Nicole, who was sitting beside him.

The table was a large one. There was a wide gap between everyone, except for Nicole and Davies. They sat so close to each other that their shoulders were glued together.

Brylee was smiling. However, there was nothing but sadness in her eyes. The usual sparkle in her eyes was nowhere to be found.

The frown on Davies' face deepened. Brylee rolled her eyes at him. She stormed out and shut the door with a bang.

This made his blood boil. Green veins popped on his temples.

On the other hand, Nicole was smiling smugly. She hit a high note in her mind, almost jumping for joy.

Early the next morning, a black Rolls-Royce drove into the premises of the Harrison Corporation.

There was pandemonium at the entrance. Several reporters with cameras were waiting for Davies. The security guards made a strong barricade to keep them out.

Sitting in the back seat, Davies glanced at the crowd indifferently. He flipped through the papers in his hand and asked, "Where did Brylee spend the night?"

"Ermm... Sir, I checked every hotel in town, but there's no record of her checking into any of them." Vincent—in the passenger seat—was scrolling through the Internet. He froze for a moment. Then he turned and held out his iPad. "Sir, you have got to see this. It's about you and Miss Riley."

"It is not the first time the media is reporting rumors about me and Nicole. What makes this one special?" Davies uttered without looking up or taking the iPad.

"The reporter for this particular piece is not just anyone, but..." Vincent zoomed in on the reporter's name on the news page. He then continued in a shaky voice, "It's your wife!"

Davies looked up sharply. The first thing he saw was Brylee's full name in italics under the headline.

His eyes narrowed to slits. He snatched the iPad and read the news.

The car soon pulled up in the underground parking lot. The driver and Vincent didn't move an inch. They looked at Davies' expression through the rearview mirror and held their breaths.

Davies suddenly burst out laughing. His laugh sounded dangerous.

"Good for her."

The rumor involving Davies and Nicole was the talk of the town in the past two days. It even became a topic of discussion among the employees and board members of the Harrison Corporation.

In the conference room that morning, the executives gave Davies weird stares when he suddenly picked up his phone and tapped the screen. They all wondered if he was texting his so-called lover.

This was the third time Davies was declining Brylee's call. A few seconds later, he received a text message from her.

"My lawyer has already drawn up the divorce agreement, so you don't have to do anything but sign it. When can you do that?"

Davies' forehead creased instantly. His face became colder under the bright light.

In a fit of pique, he slapped his phone to the table. The manager, who was presenting, shut up immediately.

Everyone turned to look at him, their eyes asking tons of questions.

Davies turned a blind eye to their stares. Instead, he looked at Victor—sitting at the head of the table—and said, "Excuse me, I have to make an urgent phone call."

Victor raised an eyebrow in confusion. Then, he smiled and waved his hand, indicating that he could go ahead.

Davies pressed the control panel of his wheelchair, and it took him out of the conference room.

He moved down the hallway and stopped at the window. Then, he dialed Brylee's number.

"Don't call me again because of this matter."

Davies' voice was low, but it sounded cold and emotionless.

Brylee was revising a report rejected by the editor-in-chief for no reason when she received the call.

A lot of things weren't going her way at the moment. She was demoted, going through a divorce, and also trying to get the hang of reporting entertainment news at the same time.

She lost her cool in no time. "Then just tell me when you can sign the divorce agreement and I won't call you again! Don't you want to divorce me? Did you find out that your childhood sweetheart isn't better than me? Do you miss me now that I'm gone?"

"Don't be ridiculous, Brylee." Davies' aura was very noble even though he was bound to a wheelchair. He leaned back and placed two fingers on his left cheek. "My lawyer should be the one to draft the divorce agreement, not yours."

"Oh, that works too! That means you agree to the divorce!"

With that, Brylee hung up on him.

Davies stared at his phone screen with his mouth agape. He didn't notice the woman in a pink dress watching him from a corner.

At noon, Brylee went to a new restaurant near the office for lunch. She was so tired that she found herself dozing off.

It wasn't hard for her to get accommodation after leaving the Harrisons' house abruptly. Due to her work, she knew a lot of people. She spent the night in an apartment close to the company.

She asked for an hour's leave to get the necessary rental paperwork over and done with. As a result, the chief editor of the entertainment news department gave her an earful.

Brylee decided to cheer up. After placing an order, she leaned back on her chair and sent her best friend, Tessie Swain, a message that read, "Where are you? Hurry up!"

Suddenly, someone tapped on her table.

"You are here! I just sent you a text..." Brylee's words trailed off when she looked up and saw it wasn't Tessie. She sneered, "What do you want, Nicole?"

"Hey!" Nicole waved her hand with a smile. She then pouted and said, "Don't be so hostile to me. I'm sorry about what happened yesterday. It's all my fault."

Brylee folded her arms and looked at her with her eyebrows raised. She didn't believe Nicole, but she didn't intend to call her bluff.

Nicole read her expression for a while. Afterward, she laughed and continued sarcastically, "Davies should have been more considerate of your emotions. He shouldn't have forgotten about you just because I was there. I guess he couldn't help it last night."

On the outside, Nicole looked so elegant in the white tweed jacket and the long pink dress. However, she was a vulgar girl with a shitty attitude.

Brylee balled her hands into fists, and then she unclenched them.

"Why are you telling me this? Go tell Davies yourself." Brylee leaned back on the chair, glanced at her watch, and added, "It's lunchtime. If you go to his office now, you can have lunch with him."

Today, Brylee only wore a wool sweater and a pair of jeans. She had no makeup on, unlike Nicole who looked like she was going to a fashion show.

This didn't make Brylee inferior. Naturally, she had a high sex appeal due to her facial features and curvy body that turned heads. Besides, she had the temperament of an intellectual. Nicole was no match for her.

Nicole was so jealous to see how good Brylee looked without putting much effort. She dropped her Louis Vuitton bag on the table and sat down.

She folded her hands on the table and said with a taunting smile, "That reminds me. You spent your last birthday alone, didn't you? Well, my birthday coincidentally falls on the same week as yours. Davies flew out to spend the entire week with me, so he couldn't make it back for yours. Sorry about that. He compensated you with a good gift, didn't he?"

Nicole hugged her bag and blushed. "This is the present he gave me. Yours must be better than mine, but I still love it. It's the thought that counts, right?"

Brylee didn't utter a word.

The truth was that Davies didn't even call to wish her a happy birthday, let alone give her a present. She wouldn't be surprised if he didn't even know her date of birth.

It was outrageous that he flew out of the country to spend the whole week with Nicole. He not only gave her his time, but also gifts and wishes.

Rays of the scorching sun radiated inside the restaurant, making Brylee's eyes hurt even more. She swallowed hard to push down the lump in her throat.
