Chapter 8 Mate to the rescue

"It's the building to the back of the pack house," says someone nearby. The man picks up the limp body of Renata and runs towards the doctor. "Doctor hurry, she may not make it," the stranger yells before arrival. When he gets in, the doctor has a bed and equipment ready. "We heard through pack link. Get her on the table," Doctor Robert says. "You can't let her die," says the stranger. "The packs need her to regain hope that our future is still possible." Doctor Robert just pushed the man out of his way. " Who are you? You're not White Moon pack. Why do you care so much about one of ours.

Is she your mate?" Doctor Robert asks in wonder. The shifted uneasily before answering. "Not my mate, doc. It's just that I've heard all the stories about gold wolves having all the gifts and being born only when shifters are in danger. We have a wolf who specializes in wolf history. He has determined that gold wolves appear just before major events, probably an attempt to prevent our extinction. So if she's here now, there must be a damn good reason," says the stranger.

"Oh, I agree with you that gold wolves only appear when needed. But you still haven't told me your name," Doctor Robert says while putting oxygen mask on the still unresponsive wolf. "Prepare the defibrillator," the doctor yells when the wolf's heart beat stops. "Ready," says the assistant. Doctor Robert doesn't waste time telling anyone to move, he just slaps the paddles on hits the power. "I brought you into this world. I'm not letting you leave it," Doctor Robert growls.

After a couple of jolts with the paddles, the wolf's heart beats a little stronger. "I told you you were a fighter, even if you can't fight," Doctor Robert chuckles. He checks her vitals and seems pleased. "So doctor is she going to be okay?" asks the stranger. "I'll answer you when you answer me," Doctor Robert says. "Oh, sorry. I was just caught up in her rescue. I'm Alpha Simon Delune of the Dark Moon pack. We're the record keepers of the Moon Goddess," says Alpha Simon. "I've heard of you," says Doctor Robert. "You send someone to every pack once a year to record birthday, deaths, and ceremonies for promotion. But why are you here in person instead of sending your representative?" The man hesitates whether he should be honest. "I don't agree with Alpha Jack or what he just tried to do. I personally hate the man for how he's treated my girl here." Doctor Robert has an idea, but he wants the man to admit himself. "When we received the news of a big announcement in White Moon, I had a feeling I needed to be here myself," says Alpha Simon. "Part of our packs gifts are a sense of important future events. Not real prophecy stuff, just a feeling something important is about to happen. I've learned to always follow that feeling."

"Well, whether Alpha admits or not, I will. I'm grateful to you for saving this girl. She's already had a hard time. I hate to see her end like this," says Doctor Robert sadly. "If you don't mind my asking, but what has she been through. I noticed she still hasn't shifted to human form. Is there something wrong," Alpha Simon asks him. Sighing, the doctor answers "she's been a disappointment to the Alpha and the pack since birth. It's the first time an alpha had a girl instead of the alpha boy heir. Instead of blaming it on a chosen mating rather fated, they blamed her. Anything that went wrong was blamed on her for her 'unlucky birth'. She's been beaten, burned, starved, and locked up more than I can remember. As she got older she became aware of the hatred and got real good at disappearing quickly. I should have suspected she was a gold based on her knowing when to not be somewhere someone wanted her to be or how fast she ran away when she did get trapped," Doctor Robert said fondly. "She was interested in learning medicine so she spent a lot of time in here both as a patient and a student."

"But wolves always shift when injured to heal faster. Why is she still a wolf?" Alpha Simon asks. "Alpha Jack forced her to shift with Alpha Command. She was locked in a silver cage and fought for her life. She's not strong enough right now to fight the Command. After some rest she'll be able to shift back," says Doctor Robert. "I hope someone will do something about the Alpha's plan to breed her. I think it would destroy her if that was allowed to happen," the doctor says with a meaningful look at Alpha Simon. "I will do my best," Alpha Simon responds. " But I can only go to council. She's not in my pack so I have no say." The doctor let's out a disappointed sigh. "I guess that's the best I can hope for. She needs out of this place before she is really killed."

We started to regain our consciousness halfway through the conversation. "So our mate is an Alpha. He sounds as yummy as he smells. I hope he looks as good, too," purrs Adira. We start to stir on the bed, letting the men know we're awake. "Are you recovered enough to shift now, girls?" Doctor Robert asks us softly. We whimper softly since our throat is still hurting. "Adira needs a little more time, doc," I say through the pack link. "Take your time," says Doctor Robert out loud. He doesn't want the Alpha beside him left out of the conversation. "Her wolf is still weak she said." Turning back to Renata, Doctor Robert tells her, "we nearly lost you, today. Thanks to the quick thinking of this young man here you'll get the chance to make your father regret what he's tried to do."

"Tell him we thank him for his help," Renata graciously links the doctors. "You're welcome," responds Alpha Simon automatically. Doctor Robert and I look at Alpha Simon in shock. "She said that in pack link. She's still in wolf form and can't speak. How did you hear it?" Doctor Robert asks, his eyes narrow in suspicion. " I didn't hear anything. You just told her to thank me," Alpha Simon said quickly. "Why won't you admit you heard them," growls his wolf, Radix. "They're our mate. We need them," he whines.
