Chapter 5 It Has Nothing To Do With Me

Rufus had liked Eunice ever since young. When he was just a child, he treated her with utmost care like she was his sister. Although they didn't see each other often later on, her attractive looks and affable nature always took his breath away whenever they crossed paths.

Now, she even grew more beautiful with age, and his heart longed for her to be his wife.

As Eunice heard what Rufus said, it didn't seem to feel right to her. There were no sparks or chemistry to speak of. When she was about to say no, Rufus suddenly did something unexpected.

The overzealous man grabbed her arms and said excitedly, "Eunice, I like you very much. I truly believe that we are destined for each other. Let's get married, okay?"

"What? No, I..." Eunice frowned and shook her head in refusal. She tried to break free from his tight grip and was about to reject him as gently as she could.

But before she could finish her words, a woman's piercing shriek interrupted their conversation.

"Rufus! What the hell are you doing?"

Witnessing their suspicious interaction from nearby, Estrella immediately flew into a rage. Her blood boiled instantly when she spotted Rufus talking to another woman. Noticing they were entangled in each other's arms, she glared at the woman and stomped forward, determined to separate the two. "You shameless tramp. Let go of Rufus, or else I'll beat you up!"

Hearing Estrella's high-pitched voice, Eunice and Rufus stopped what they were doing and turned around in shock.

When the furious woman walked over, she gritted her teeth and jabbed a finger at Eunice. "You little whore! This man is my fiance! Back off right now and..."

Now that Estrella was right in front of them, she suddenly recognized Eunice and fell silent.

Her half-sister was the last person she expected to see. After all, the entire Moore family had thought Eunice was already dead. Dazed and utterly confused, it took a few seconds before Estrella found her voice.

"Eunice? How could you be here?" Estrella exclaimed in disbelief.

Wearing a cold expression, Eunice didn't bother to respond. She withdrew her gaze, shook off Rufus' hands, and stepped away from the couple.

Viewing her actions as a silent rejection, Rufus felt sad and asked imploringly, "Eunice, don't you like me?"

Seeing Rufus' affection towards her half-sister irked Estrella even more. She immediately confronted Eunice and glared at her. "I don't know what you think you're trying to do here, but Rufus is mine. You'd better stay away if you know what's good for you. Try anything foolish, and I'll kick your ass!"

As soon as Estrella finished speaking, Rufus furrowed his eyebrows and shook his head adamantly.

"You're wrong. I was never yours to begin with. I want nothing more to do with you, and I sure as hell won't marry you."

Estrella was shocked by his cruel words. Slowly realizing what was going on, she turned to Eunice and then back at Rufus. "Are you going to marry this woman?"

"Yes, I will," Rufus firmly replied.

Hearing his answer, Estrella was utterly devastated. Her hopes and dreams of becoming Rufus' wife were quickly falling apart.

She hyperventilated and struggled to regain her composure. It seemed to her that Eunice had successfully manipulated Rufus into turning against her. But she would not accept this defeat so easily.

"Eunice Moore!" Estrella shouted at the top of her lungs. "Now that you have taken away my fiance, I'm going to kill you."

Within seconds, the wrathful woman dropped her bag to the floor and immediately tackled her rival.

But Eunice had anticipated this move from her half-sister, so she caught her arms and struggled to overpower her.

Fearing for Eunice's safety, Rufus quickly intervened and tried to pull the unpredictable Estrella away.

"Estrella, let go of her this instant. I won't allow you to hurt her!" With his strong arms, Rufus took hold of Estrella's waist and pushed her a few feet away.

But Estrella refused to give up without hitting Eunice. She ran towards her again, but Rufus immediately blocked her path and stared at her reproachingly.

"Get out of my way, or else..." Consumed by her rage, Estrella was too hysterical to finish her words.

Ignoring her emotions, Rufus stood firm and crossed his arms. "Enough of this. If you have any decency left within you, please leave."

But Estrella was still trembling in anger. She glared at Rufus and remained in her spot. With both sides refusing to concede, it seemed they were at a stand-off.

During this heated moment, Eunice smoothed her messy hair and straightened her clothes. Breathing in deeply, she calmed down and cleared her throat. She moved beside Rufus and looked at her seething half-sister without emotion.

"Estrella, what Rufus just said has nothing to do with me. I don't love him, nor do I want to marry him. You should settle the matter yourselves and leave me out of this."

Hearing her explanation, Estrella was a little surprised but didn't believe any of it. Meanwhile, Rufus was taken aback and turned to look at Eunice with sadness in his eyes.

Without avoiding his gaze, Eunice stared back at him and said, "Rufus, I won't marry you. I had been driven out of the Moore family three years ago, and now I'm no longer bound to fulfill my former duties. Your pre-arranged engagement to a member of the Moore family has nothing to do with me now."

She had treated Rufus as if he was her brother since childhood. But now, she only saw him as an ordinary friend.
