"The result of your pregnancy test just came back. You are indeed pregnant. Congratulations!" The gynecologist smiled lightly as she revealed the news.
Eunice Moore couldn't believe her ears. How was that even possible?
Her eyes were wide open with shock. It was unbelievable.
She didn't have a boyfriend, nor had she ever been intimate with any man. How could she be pregnant? There must have been some kind of mistake.
Estrella Moore, Eunice's half-sister, covered her mouth and stared at the supposedly pregnant woman. "Eunice, I just thought you had a stomachache. I wasn't expecting this at all! How could you be pregnant before marriage? This is unacceptable. I have to tell Dad and Mom."
As soon as she finished speaking, Estrella pulled out her phone and called home.
Eunice was still in a daze. She didn't know what to do in this situation. The doctor cleared her throat and shot a sympathetic look at Eunice.
"The results of your physical examination are very unstable, and the risk of miscarriage is unfortunately high that it may lead to a case of lifelong infertility. It would be best for you to keep the baby."
Unable to absorb the mind-boggling information, Eunice simply stared at the doctor, at a loss for words.
When the sisters returned home, Eunice was immediately confronted by her father and stepmother.
"You are so shameless. How could you do this to us? I am utterly disappointed in you!" Leonel Moore jabbed his finger at his daughter's face, extremely furious.
"Alas, you have ruined our family's reputation!" Deanna Moore threw her hands in the air out of frustration.
Then she turned to her husband and continued, "The Mendez family planned to strengthen our bond by marriage. Your father said that he would let Eunice marry into the Mendez family, but now here we are. This little..."
Deanna wanted to curse and unleash her wrath on Eunice but stopped on second thought.
Leonel shook his head and said, "Eunice doesn't deserve it. Let Estrella marry into the Mendez family instead."
Hearing this change of plans, Deanna smiled with satisfaction and looked proudly at her daughter.
Estrella's face immediately lit up. Barely containing her excitement, she clapped her hands and remarked, "Great! I have always liked Rufus."
Leonel nodded in approval. But his expression turned livid once again as he resumed scolding Eunice.
Unlike her half-sister, Eunice didn't care about the engagement at all. Despite receiving rude remarks and grave threats from her father and stepmother, all she could think about was her pregnancy.
The only possibility she could think of where she got impregnated was at the class reunion three months ago. She had gotten drunk after having a glass of wine and couldn't recall what had happened afterward.
Leonel and Deanna continued to berate Eunice, but she didn't respond or defend herself. Satisfied that she had seemed to finally realize her mistake, the pair soon watched TV with Estrella, ignoring their distraught daughter for the next few hours.
While they were changing the channel, a breaking news report caught their attention. "This is a news update on the successor of the powerful Lawson family. After allegedly being chased down by his enemies and sustaining multiple stab wounds, he has yet to be found. He has been missing for more than three months now. The police and the Lawson family have tried every means to search for him, but his whereabouts are still unknown. If you have any information that could help the investigators locate him, please call the number flashed on your screen."
Three years later, Eunice stepped off the train and onto the railway station of Orley. Her slim figure was tightly wrapped in a sleek windbreaker. With shoulder-length hair and light make-up on her face, she looked very delicate and beautiful. She carried a big white suitcase in one hand and held a little boy's hand with the other.
The cute youngster wore a baseball cap and a cool denim jacket. He looked up at his mother and asked in a sweet voice, "Mommy, are we going to look for my godmother now?"
"Not yet. Let's go to the hotel first and get some rest. We will meet her tonight," Eunice replied with a light smile.
There were some important matters that she needed to deal with first. As soon as they arrived at the hotel and put down her luggage, she had to get down to business. Aside from that, she had made an appointment with her good friend, Delia Cortez. They were going to meet for dinner later that evening. All in all, it was a jampacked day.
"Oh, okay!" the little boy replied with a toothy grin.
Eunice led her son towards the taxi stand. When they approached a taxi driver to take them to their hotel, they didn't notice two men watching them from a distance.
Beside a billboard were two men in suits. One of them stood tall with a strong aura, and most of his face was covered by sunglasses. When he looked at Eunice and the little boy, his heart began to race.
"Miss Moore and your son are probably headed to the hotel," the other man whispered. He was Julius Nelson, the tall man's assistant.
He had just verified this information yesterday. Eunice had indeed booked a hotel in Orley two days ago.
The tall man didn't respond. Instead, he kept his eyes on the receding figures of the mother and son.
Once the taxi drove away, the man turned to Julius and said, "Follow them."
Inside the vehicle, Eunice looked out the window with her son sleeping on her lap. As she watched the hustle and bustle of the big city flash before her eyes, a flurry of thoughts suddenly entered her mind.
On that fateful day when she became pregnant three years ago, her bitter father and stepmother drove her out of the Moore family. Because of her delicate physical condition, abortion was out of the option, so she fled to the countryside to ask her aunt for help.
When Eunice underwent another physical examination in the town's general hospital, she was shocked to discover that she was pregnant with triplets. On the day of her childbirth, her two infants suffered complications, and they lost their breath as soon as they were born. Only the last child was delivered safely. It was a healthy baby boy.
After Eunice's son was born, she kept crying every day, mourning the loss of her other two children. With her only child by her side, she had to become a caring and responsible mother, willing herself to rise from depression.
However, Eunice had gone through many difficulties in the past three years. But fortunately, her aunt was good to both mother and son. The little boy was obedient and sensible, making Eunice's life as a mother a little easier. She was grateful to her aunt and proud of her son. Due to her perseverance, her life gradually became better.
Now, as Eunice held the little boy tightly, she only hoped that her son could grow up to be a healthy and kind person and that everything in his life would be as smooth as possible.
As soon as they arrived at Klein Hotel, Eunice gently woke up her son. They got out of the taxi and were about to enter the lobby when Eunice's phone suddenly rang.
It was a call from Delia. Eunice took her son aside and said, "Brent, Mommy needs to talk to Delia first. You can go around the premises but stay close and no running, okay?"
"Alright, Mommy. I'll go to the parterre to see the flowers." After Eunice nodded in approval, Brent trotted towards the parterre not far away.
Seeing that her son was just within earshot, Eunice answered the call.
"Hello, Eunice! Have you and Brent arrived at Orley safely?" Delia asked with concern.
"Yes. We're just about to enter the hotel. After checking in, I will set up a business meeting with the Frazier Group. I have to settle things once and for all," Eunice replied in a serious voice.
The Frazier Group was passed on to Eunice's mother by her grandfather. The wise woman had wanted Eunice to take over the company once she grew older. But she passed away unexpectedly, leaving the role of acting president to her husband, Leonel.
In recent news, it was widely reported that Leonel had plans to sell the Frazier Group and register a new company in which Deanna would be the legal representative. This shocking piece of information didn't sit well with Eunice, so she had to stop her father at all costs.
She could not allow her grandfather's company to be sold to another business group. Moreover, she would never let Deanna get a share of the profit.
"Go and take back everything that belongs to you. Rest assured that you have my support. I wish you good luck!" Delia exclaimed in a determined voice.
"I'll get it done and make you proud. Thank you." Hearing Delia's words of encouragement, Eunice became more confident. Then the two continued chatting, planning their activities for the following days.
Roaming around the parterre, Brent wanted to pick some flowers to give them to his mother later on. But an old man selling cartoon balloons across the street had caught his attention. He was so excited that he wanted to run over and have a closer look.
Just as Brent started running, he saw a biker heading straight in his direction. The both of them were on a collision course, and it seemed nothing was going to prevent the accident. Suddenly, a worried voice rang in the little boy's ears.
"Watch out, kid!"
At the very last second, two sturdy arms wrapped around Brent in an instant, shielding the little boy from harm.
The teenager riding the bicycle tried to change directions and grazed the man from behind, speeding off into the intersection.
After a long pause, the surroundings quieted down. The man slowly released Brent once he made sure there was no danger.
"Hey, kid. Are you alright?" the man asked in a low voice.
It was not until then that Brent saw the man's face clearly. He looked remarkably handsome.
Just a few moments ago, Brent was in danger. But now, he was safe and sound, all thanks to this kind stranger.
With this in mind, Brent smiled gratefully and replied softly, "I'm fine, mister. Thank you for helping me."
The man nodded his head and said in a serious tone, "You shouldn't be running around like this. Accidents happen a lot here in the big city. Go back to your mommy and stay close to her at all times."
"Okay, mister."
Narrowly avoiding a disaster, Brent still felt very scared. He quickly turned around and ran to his mommy.
The man was satisfied upon seeing the little boy obey his instructions. He then strode away towards the busy street and disappeared into the crowd.
Eunice kept chatting on the phone, unaware that her son had almost gotten into an accident. Once she ended the call, a silent Brent was right beside her. She presumed that he was tired of playing and wanted to take a rest. Patting his head affectionately, she said, "Let's go inside the hotel lobby to check in."
"Okay, Mommy."
After getting her room key from the front desk, Eunice applied her son to the child daycare. She went to her room and put her luggage down, ensuring that their belongings were complete. Before leaving for errands, she handed Brent over to the babysitter. She kissed him goodbye and left in a hurry.
Inside the meeting room of the Frazier Group building, Leonel and Deanna sat together with their lawyers by their sides. They were negotiating with the buyer who intended to purchase the company.
At the front desk of the building lobby, Eunice showed her identity proof to the receptionist and said, "I'm the eldest daughter of the Moore family. I'm here for my father. Where is he now?"
After confirming her identity, the receptionist told the truth. "Mr. and Mrs. Moore are in the meeting room on the top floor. The business conference with the potential buyer is already underway."
Upon hearing this, Eunice's eyes flickered with resentment. She pocketed her identity proof and went straight to the elevator.
Back in the meeting room, Leonel and the buyer had finally reached an agreement. Their respective lawyers had double-checked the legal papers and found that there was no problem. All that was left to do was to make it official.
"Mr. Reed, I'm glad we've finally come to good terms. Rest assured, our business relationship will only grow stronger from here. So without further ado, let's sign the contract." Leonel couldn't wait for the Frazier Group to be sold so he could finally receive all the money and start a new company with his wife.
"Agreed, Mr. Moore. I look forward to adding the Frazier Group to my corporation. Cheers to both of us."
As soon as Jayson Reed finished his words, the door of the meeting room suddenly burst open.
"Hold it right there! This deal must not push through!" A fierce-looking Eunice walked inside and glared at the shocked couple.
When Eunice overheard at the door that they were about to sign the contract, she felt lucky to have arrived just in the nick of time.
Across the long table, Leonel and Deanna suddenly became furious.
"Eunice? What are you doing here?" Leonel asked in disbelief as he stood up.
The Moore family had never heard from Eunice after she was driven out of their home. Leonel thought she felt so ashamed and had committed suicide. He didn't expect her to reappear in the company building, especially at such a crucial time.
Meanwhile, Deanna stood up and flanked her husband. She gritted her teeth and pointed a finger at her stepdaughter. "What do you think you're doing?"
"Isn't it obvious? I'm here to stop you from selling the Frazier Group," Eunice answered firmly, glaring at her father and stepmother.
With a sense of urgency, Eunice turned to the startled group right across them. She greeted the potential buyer and stated her business there. "Hello, I'm Eunice Moore. I am here to take back what is rightfully mine. My grandfather passed down this company to my mother, and she declared that I would be the successor to the Frazier Group. There is a written document about this that had been notarized by her attorneys. Therefore, my father and stepmother have no right to sell this company. I am in charge now."
Jayson and his people were surprised by this shocking revelation. They immediately turned to each other and whispered amongst themselves.
Fearing for the worst, Leonel and Deanna became anxious. Millions of dollars were about to slip away from their fingertips.
"That's a load of nonsense! Since your mother's death, this company has belonged to me. I have the right to decide what's best for business," Leonel exclaimed fiercely, staring at Eunice with contempt.
"That's right," echoed Deanna. She couldn't resist her impulse and rushed forward to confront Eunice. "You little bitch, I'll beat you up and kick your ass out of here!"
The seething woman lashed out and raised her hand to slap Eunice, charging forward to push her stepdaughter out of the room.
But Eunice was not going down without a fight. She blocked the slap with ease and held her position, unwilling to concede.
"You bitch, how dare you resist?" After failing to push Eunice away, she gnashed her teeth in frustration. "You obviously don't know what I'm capable of. I will put an end to your miserable existence today!"
Deanna was driven into a frenzy. She lunged at Eunice, determined to hurt her by any means necessary.
Keeping her composure, Eunice continued to hold the crazy woman at bay and did her best not to get hurt.
Seeing that his wife couldn't land a single blow on Eunice, Leonel rushed over to aid his wife.
Faced with the mounting pressure, Eunice couldn't defend herself any longer. Just as Deanna's palm was about to hit her face, a loud bang interrupted the fight.
With a disappointed look on his face, Jayson pounded the table and stood up. Looking at Leonel, he said discontentedly, "Mr. Moore, since your company has an internal dispute, you'd better deal with it first. We can resume our business deal after you solve the problem."
Leonel and Deanna were too stunned to speak. They stopped ganging up on Eunice and dropped their hands.
Realizing they had acted recklessly in front of the buyer, Leonel and Deanna became anxious. The business transaction was only a pair of signatures away from pushing through. When they were about to apologize and persuade Jayson to stay, the man's voice echoed in the meeting room.
"Let's go. We are finished here." Jayson walked towards the door and beckoned his people to follow him.
"Okay, boss."
His lawyers quickly filed out of the room behind him. Within seconds, they were all gone.
"But Mr. Reed, I assure you that everything is under control. Can we please resume the meeting?" Leonel called out after Jayson, desperate for the deal to happen.
But it was too late. The meeting room became quiet, and there were no outsiders left. Straightening her blouse, Eunice cleared her throat and looked at her father. "I want to take back the Frazier Group."
"Not a chance!" Deanna objected. "Your father and I have managed the Frazier Group all this time. It belongs to us. We will never give it to you."
Seemingly unfazed, Eunice ignored her statement and waited for her father's reply.
Seeing the determined expression on Eunice's face, Leonel sighed and clicked his tongue. After hesitating for a moment, he laid out his condition.
"Indeed, the Frazier Group belongs to your mother. She declared that you could inherit the company and manage it, but only after you get married. I see no wedding ring on your finger, so you still don't have the right to assert your claim. Until you find yourself a husband, the Frazier Group is still mine," Leonel said firmly. It was final.
It took a few seconds for her father's words to sink in. Eunice was dumbfounded.
So she could only take over the company after she got married? Eunice had never heard about this condition before.
At the time her mother talked to her about the arrangement, Eunice was still a young child. Her mother only mentioned that she could run the Frazier Group once she reached adulthood. There was a written document about it, but her mother apparently did not tell her all the details.
Eunice was caught off guard by this surprising condition. It was a curveball she did not see coming.
Racking her brain for possible ideas, Eunice suddenly thought of a plan.
So the only thing stopping her from taking back what was rightfully hers was that she was not married yet?
Slowly nodding her head, Eunice looked her father in the eye and asked, "If I get married soon, will you hand over the Frazier Group?"
This hard-hitting question made Leonel suddenly realize the impending crisis, and he kept his mouth shut. He could not afford to lose everything, especially not to his estranged daughter.
A Frazier Group lawyer seated nearby chimed in, "Yes. This specific condition is indeed stated in the document that your mother signed all those years ago. The papers were notarized, meaning her wishes and declarations must be carried out under the eyes of the law. As long as you meet the requirements of your mother's will, you can go through the inheritance procedures." The kind lawyer answered her question honestly and revealed everything Eunice needed to know.
Hearing his explanation, Eunice felt relieved, while Leonel and Deanna were so angry that their faces darkened.
Nodding to the lawyer, Eunice felt better about the situation and said, "In that case, I'll just get married as soon as possible and take over the Frazier Group."
After she had disrupted the meeting earlier, there was no turning back now. Eunice had made her intentions clear and just needed to follow through. The Frazier Group would soon be under her name.
"It would be my pleasure to assist you in handling the case and going through the related formalities." The lawyer nodded.
Eunice smiled in response.
Watching the brief exchange between Eunice and the lawyer, Leonel and Deanna became furious. They were in charge of the company, not her!
"Humph. You won't succeed. Who would marry a woman who had given birth to another man's child? What fool would love such a pathetic bitch with excess baggage?" Deanna said mockingly. She didn't believe that Eunice would be able to find a husband.
Hearing his wife's words, Leonel suddenly had an idea. He turned to his daughter and said in a serious tone, "I'll give you one day. If you are not married before tomorrow noon, you will lose the right to inherit the company. When that happens, I am next in line to be the successor. Frazier Group will belong to me and have nothing to do with you."
Leonel was so sure that Eunice would be unable to meet the short deadline, and no man was willing to marry a woman who had a child out of wedlock. Thus, the Frazier Group would be his forever.
After learning about the time limit, Eunice realized that it was nearly impossible to get married within a day. She immediately disagreed and began to quarrel with Leonel and his wife.
But no matter how hard she tried to argue, there was nothing she could do to change their minds. In the end, she reluctantly accepted the terms.
After leaving the meeting room, Eunice sat at the rest area and thought about the matter carefully.
The most important thing right now was to find her future husband. It shouldn't be that difficult as she didn't have too many requirements in a partner. As long as the man was of good character and ready for marriage, it would be fine. After all, she already had a child of her own, although she still didn't know the father's identity.
But just in case her plan failed and time ran out, what would she do then?
Worried and irritable, she kept thinking of a way to pull off a miracle. But her brain soon grew weary and ran out of ideas. To calm herself down, she planned to relax in the cafe next to the office building for a while.
When Eunice arrived at the quaint coffee shop, she ordered a cup of hot latte. With her drink in hand, she scanned the entire room for a vacant seat. But to her dismay, all the tables were occupied.
Left with no other choice, Eunice decided to approach a table with a man sitting on his own.
It was perfectly normal for strangers to share a table in the cafe, so Eunice walked over with a friendly smile.
When she went to the empty seat, she looked directly at the man who was busy typing on his laptop. Waving her hand in front of him, she greeted him politely. "Hello, excuse me."
Eunice wanted to wait for the man's response before asking if she could share the table with him.
But when the man heard her voice, he looked up at her with a cold expression.
His eyes flickered with indifference. "Take a seat." Eunice was stunned by his response.
Huh? Did the man already know she was there to share the table with him?
Eunice thought it might be the case, so she ignored his strange behavior and happily sat on the vacant seat.
The moment she settled down and put her drink on the table, the man suddenly shut his laptop and looked at her.
"Since we are on a blind date, let me introduce myself to you first. My name is Rodney Lawson, and I am twenty-eight years old. I work as a programmer for a well-known IT company. I have a house, a car, and some savings. You seem attractive and charming. Overall, I'm pleased with your physical appearance. I'm willing to marry you should you agree. The main reason I agreed to this blind date is that my family members constantly urge me to find a wife and settle down. If you want, we can get married as soon as possible." After summarizing his personal information and intentions, Rodney remained expressionless and waited for Eunice's answer.
Upon hearing his speech, Eunice's eyes widened in shock.
Of all the people she could have shared a table with, it was a brooding man looking for a partner. He even treated her as if she was his blind date in the first place.
Like a gift sent from the heavens, she came across a man who wanted to get married immediately.
It was the perfect scenario for the two of them. They were both single and shared the same needs and thoughts. Now that the opportunity presented itself, her plan to get married before noon the next day could work out after all.
Paying close attention this time, Eunice observed Rodney's appearance as she sipped her latte.
He had a handsome look and defined facial features. Moreover, his professional clothes and confident aura made it seem he held a well-respected position in his workplace. Despite his cold demeanor, he was a little charming. Eunice looked at his face again. She noticed that his eyes and lips resembled that of her son Brent. There was no denying that this man was definitely good-looking.
After a few seconds of studying his appearance, Eunice had a good impression of him. She soon considered that he seemed to be a suitable man to marry. With this in mind, she decided to play along and introduce herself.
After making some mental preparations, she sat straight and said in a pleasant voice, "Hello, my name is Eunice Moore, and I'm twenty-five years old. I used to work as an online translator and can speak three foreign languages. I don't have a job right now, but I'll be working soon after I handle a family matter. So going back to your proposal, I need to clear up some things first. I actually like the looks of you. Yes, I can consider marrying you, but you should know that I have a child."
Eunice didn't intend to hide anything from him, so she remained honest. "I got pregnant three years ago before marriage. I would understand if you have a problem..."
Before she finished her words, Rodney raised his hand to stop her.
"I don't mind at all," Rodney replied calmly. "I accept your past and your child."
