Chapter 4 Sarah's Plight.

Sarah felt very inadequate in the eyes of her classmates. They were mostly famished at home as every penny they had saved was used in paying her school fees and that of her younger siblings.

This left very little to nothing to cater for food at home and was the major reason why she badly wanted to transfer to another cheaper school. Their house was always in a sorry state that she vowed to herself that she would the situation when she was done with school.

Her parents had died leaving not even a single penny behind but a lot of debts which they used the money to cater for their medical expenses. That day, she had not even eaten lunch and was wishing that her grandparents were lucky that day to get a job by which they could pay for food in the grocery shop that was located at the ghetto they lived in.

She mostly had pity on her younger ones as they could not understand when food was not available for them once they came from school.

She ruffled her hair as she made the corner which led to her grandparent's compound which she cherished with her life. The house was a modest make which outlined their humble and unpretentious lifestyle.

They worked tool and nail to preserve each and every aspect of it so that they could not incur additional expenses. Their gate was hollow at the center that they had used pieces of old wood to seal it. This was adequate enough to keep them away from the thieves that kept on roaming in the ghetto stealing from the vulnerable population that lived miserable lives.

She thought this as a wide smile spread across her face. Her stomach growled automatically when she realized that she could be having a feast in just a matter of time.

Her siblings, Nana and Nina, were at home as they had come earlier from school. She could tell this by the absence of the tree twigs in the compound as she had left in the morning. Her grandparents instilled in them the value of hard work and ensured that everything was done to perfection.

"These children are truly hardworking," she found herself thinking out loud to herself.

They attended a government school that had been set up in the neighborhood. Sarah had the duty of lending a hand to her granny with performing house chores before she would sit at the tiny study table to read until sleep overcame her.

This was mostly after midnight as she told herself that she would do the best so that she could help her grandparents in the future in taking care of her siblings when they were too old to work.

She had restrained herself from securing part time employment as this would eat into her school time and what was left in helping her grandparents. This was the norm in the Zara house hold as it was known by the neighbors. Her grandmother was humming to a tune in the kitchen as the pot simmered.

Sarah went towards her grandmother and hugged her. They exchanged pleasantries as she headed towards the sitting room to greet Nana
