Chapter 5 Warm Embrace

"What are you talking about?"

Cheryl sounded confused.

'When did I have a childhood sweetheart?' she wondered.

Jarred shot her a glare. "Do you honestly think that I don't know that you have feelings for someone else?"

Cheryl was shocked and hurt to hear him accuse her of that. "The one I love is…"

She gritted her teeth, biting back her words, for she knew that it would only disgrace her further.

In truth, she wanted to tell Jarred that he was the only man she loved and would ever love for the rest of her life.

But she decided against saying it. Since he didn't love her back, there was no point in baring her true feelings for him. She wasn't that cheap.

'After Ines called him last night, he left me all alone at home even though it was midnight.

He's the one who didn't come home all night, and yet he has the gall to tell me that I'm the one who's in love with someone else? Unbelievable!' Cheryl complained inwardly.

"Why don't you go ahead? Are you afraid that I'll cause trouble for him?" Jarred scoffed. His heartless words were like blades, tearing Cheryl's heart apart.

She kept a straight face and feigned calmness. "Stop being so rude. You're the one who asked for a divorce first. I'm merely doing as you wished!"

Having said that, she turned around and walked back to her room, fearing that she'd burst into tears if she walked even a little slower.

"Cheryl."

A familiar and urgent voice came from behind.

Cheryl suddenly stopped in her tracks and felt sick.

She then rushed towards the bathroom and threw up.

She felt as though all the organs in her body were churning. Nausea overcame her and almost made her faint.

It took quite a while before she opened the bathroom door.

And once she was outside, Jarred was nowhere to be found. 'What were you even looking forward to, Cheryl? Are you just that stupid?' Cheryl asked herself inwardly.

When Jarred went downstairs, he saw that the servants were busy with their work.

"Cheryl is sick. Were you slacking in taking care of her?"

He made sure to harden his voice and put on a stern expression. The servants were all so nervous when they heard his commanding voice.

"Um… Mrs. Fuller was… she was okay last night."

The thought of Cheryl vomiting inside the bathroom made Jarred frown.

"Make some nutritious soup for her on the double!" he commanded.

"Yes, sir."

All of a sudden, Jarred's phone rang. He heard Jamison Singh's voice over the phone.

"Mr. Fuller, something has happened to the project. I'm afraid you'll have to deal with it in person."

By the time the phone call had ended, the driver had already driven the car to the villa's gate.

Cheryl stood by the window watching Jarred leave. Her face was ghastly pale and her heart was aching.

Ever since he mentioned the divorce yesterday, they hadn't spoken to each other normally.

She would either hide in the room or he'd leave home.

'It seems that we can't go back to those happy days ever again,' she thought bitterly.

At night.

Having learned her lesson from yesterday, Cheryl no longer waited for Jarred and just went to bed early.

By the time he came home, she was already asleep. However, the lamplight beside the bed was still lit. It was her habit to leave a light for him every night.

He closed the door carefully and went to the study.

'Cheryl isn't feeling well. I shouldn't disturb her,' he thought.

Jarred worked inside his study until it was very late at night. Then, he slept on the small bed inside the study.

But because he wasn't used to sleeping there, he was restlessly tossing and turning.

He sat up, looking through his phone, only to find a message that he had ignored.

It was a message from one of his servants. It read, "Mr. Fuller, please rest assured. Mrs. Fuller drank the soup and she didn't vomit any more today."

Upon reading the message, Jarred felt much better.

After a moment of hesitation, he decided to go back to their bedroom.

Quietly and carefully, he lay on the bed and embraced Cheryl.

At this time, she was sleeping soundly. The second he embraced her, she moved closer to him and instinctively adjusted to a more comfortable sleeping position.

Jarred stared at his wife in silence.

Cheryl's face was glowing with vitality. Her skin was radiant and her rosy lips were all the more attractive.

Each time she pursed her lips, her dimples would become visible. She had no idea how beautiful she was at this moment.

Unable to resist her charms any longer, Jarred planted a kiss on her forehead.

"Good night, Cheryl."

They embraced each other on the bed.

Ever since Jarred was a child, he had a crippling fear of the dark. Every time he was in a dark, secluded environment, it would invoke terror in his heart. This was the Fuller family's well-kept secret.

Outsiders only knew that the lights of the Fuller family remained on at all times of the day, and they thought that this rich family was just doing it for the hell of it.

The sight of Cheryl's wrinkled face beneath the light made Jarred infer that she was feeling uncomfortable because the light was affecting her sleep.

After pondering on it for a moment, he decided to turn off the lamp on the bedside table.

As soon as the light disappeared, a strong feeling of danger flooded into his heart. The darkness ate at him and he felt like something hiding beneath it would show up and tear him apart.

When he held Cheryl in his arms, all the fear that razed his psyche was dispelled.

This was a strange phenomenon that he had discovered a long time ago.

Every time he was with Cheryl, he no longer feared the darkness. It was as if everything was back to normal.

But then, he remembered that the one who accompanied him back then was actually Ines.
