Chapter 5 Get a Job

My first interview in eight years. I am so nervous that it's hard to breath. I need to shower but I feel like I may faint. The last time I did an interview I was fresh out of college and so eager to start my career. I spent three years with that Fortune 500 company before Joseph said I should just stay home and help him.

Today feels like the first day of high school. I am excited but scared at the same time. I've tried so many different combinations and nothing looks right. Oh well, this will do, black is always appropriate. Walking into the National Savings and Loans bank all I could think about is regret. By now I could have been a regional director for Meryl Lynch had I not stupidly quit to help Joseph build his business. I had already been there two years and went from loan officer to the Loan Department Supervisor. I have to stop dwelling on the past! I told myself to focus on what I will say in the interview and not allow my regrets to distract me from doing my very best in the interview.

Ms. Samantha James, Mr. Davis will see you now, said the pretty red head receptionist. "Thank you", I replied. As I entered the office, I noticed that Mr. Davis was extremely handsome. He was tall and I could tell that he spends time in the gym because his biceps looked like they were going to burst out of his shirt sleeves. I thought to myself, how can a man look this good, he must be married with children. I was so engulfed with his appearance that I did not notice him speaking to me.

"Ms. James are you okay? Sorry to have kept you waiting. I have been eager to meet the woman that I have heard such raving reviews about from Doug at Meryl Lynch", said Mr. Davis. "Wow I'm amazed that Doug remembered me, and I am equally eager at the opportunity to possibly become an asset to National Savings and Loans that is if you'll have me of course", I answered. "Well Ms. James tell me what made you leave Meryl Lynch when things had become so promising for you, he asked? Oh no, he asked a question that I had not rehearsed in my head. How did I not anticipate that question. I should have known he would ask about me leaving.

"Honestly Mr. Davis I had decided to go home and become a homemaker and raise my family without having to sacrifice time." "Oh I see that is understandable how many children do you have", he asked? Oh my God does this man want me to smack myself? Why does he insist on asking me questions that only make me want to kick myself every day. "Well, actually I don't have any children because at that time my fiancé felt it best to come home and start getting prepared to have a family by being there to help assist him get his Private Practice established. Unfortunately, our relationship ended after his practice was up and running before I was able to conceive". "If you don't mind me asking what happened" he asked and then he paused and there was silence before he proceeded to say, "you are welcome not to answer if it is too personal". "Oh no its ok it's not too personal", I answered. Of course that's a lie! Yes it is too personal. This is an interview and I don't have a therapist for this very reason although I'm sure I need one.

I hesitated and then answered, "Mr. Davis I don't know what happened. I woke up one morning four weeks away from our wedding to be exact and he was gone and as of today I still don't know why." "Wow and yet you sit here in my office looking beautiful and glowing. I would have never known that you had been through anything like that. I commend you for your strength and that's enough for me to know that you would be a great asset to this financial institution. Congrats and welcome aboard", said Mr. Davis.
