Chapter 6 Commit Suicide

Refusing to let despair overcome her, Windy closed her eyes. She knew he had the physical strength to strangle her, but would he have the guts? She wouldn't have bet on it. Her death would relieve them immensely, and yet she wasn't sure he would be ruthless enough to go through with it.

Shawn's bloodthirsty eyes were fixed to his victim's calm face. He couldn't deny her extraordinary beauty. It had struck him the very first moment he had seen her. If he hadn't met Carol first, would he have wanted this woman more?

This question was asinine. He had Carol. Windy was nothing to him.

But he had to admit, this woman was too beautiful to be killed. How could he bear to extinguish the light in those admirable eyes? How could he snuff the life out of the perfect body? He would have a hard time explaining how he strangled her, even by accident, to his grandfather and the people of the Fu Clan. He might even be accused of murder. A woman like Windy was not worth the bother.

He slowly loosened his grip on her neck. He did not speak. He did not move.

For a moment, he didn't dare letting it go. For some strange and inexplicable reason, he feared he would really strangle her by accident.

"Ahem..." She finally slipped out of his grip and fell back unto the bed, coughing violently. Suffocation was apparently not in his ballpark. She painfully straightened up, secretly glad that Shawn hadn't had the heart to hurt her. Who knew he would have shown her mercy at the very last moment?

He immediately proved her wrong. His cold, insensitive voice pierced her ears. She couldn't perceive any trace of pity in it. "Windy, I will let you go. It's only because I don't want to land into any trouble because of you. You're not worth making me spend time in prison."

Of course. He was only thinking about himself. He would have killed her without a second thought if he could have done that without risking incriminating himself.

After seconds of surprise, Windy let out a strangely mocking smile. How stupid was she? If she wasn't so narcissistic, she would see that Shawn couldn't care less whether she lived or died.

"Get out!" He was beside himself with anger.

The violence in his voice made Windy come back to her senses. Her brow furrowed and she vainly tried to look for an answer in Shawn's cold eyes. What did he mean?

"Are you deaf? Can't you hear me? Leave!" He was spitting his words at her in cold fury.

'Get out?

Was he trying to drive me out of the bed and make me sleep somewhere else?'

Her own husband was kicking her out of the bed, on her wedding night. Was there any bride more miserable than her in the world?

Shawn would not budge. She had no choice but to obey. She got out of the bed, wrapped herself up in a blanket and went to change into a new pair of pajamas. She quietly sat down on the sofa, dejected. She had never felt so alone.

A phone ring broke her out of her self-commiseration. She frowned at the sight of the caller ID: she hadn't expected to hear from the Fu Clan. Her surprise was so great that she momentarily forgot the pain and humiliation Shawn had just inflicted unto her. Why was her family calling her at such a late hour?

Windy pressed the answer key eagerly. What she heard from the anxious voice from the other end of the phone chilled her to the bones. "Windy, bad news. Your sister cut her wrist. She is on her way to the hospital. Come here quickly."

Sally had barely taken a breath and had hung up before Windy could fully register the meaning of her words. Seized by a dreadful panic, she began to shout, "Hello, Mom, Mom..."

She called and called again, to no avail. She had to go to the hospital, nothing else mattered. Her broken relation with Shawn was the least of her worries. She rushed to the bedside, and shrieked at Shawn lying on the bed, "Something happened to my sister!"

The effect on Shawn was drastic. He shot up from the bed at once. Alarms went off in his brain. Carol was in danger! He could only think of one thing: he had to see her immediately and make sure she was safe.

Shawn was lost in a daze. When he finally realized where he was and what had happened, he turned his cold gaze to Windy. She was the one responsible. Carol was hurt because of her. "This is the result you want. Are you happy now?"

Windy didn't deserve to carry the blame for Carol's misfortune, but she immediately understood why Shawn was directing his anger at her. He thought that she had caused her sister's accident! Too shocked to defend herself, she could only shake her head in dismay.

Windy's pitiful attitude only enraged Shawn further. Wretched creature! How could she stand like that and pretend to be as innocent as a lamb? He spat at her with disgust, "Don't act like you're a victim. It won't work on me, I know what you are. Now you'd better pray that Carol is fine, or I will make you pay."

Shawn quickly brushed himself up and rushed out of the bedroom, Windy on his trail. They did not exchange a word during the whole ride to the hospital.

Henry and Sally were waiting anxiously outside the emergency room. When Shawn and Windy arrived, Henry could barely talk. "Here you are, Shawn and Windy."

"Windy." Sally pressed Windy's hand and burst into tears.

"Mom, don't worry. She will be fine." Windy cursed her feeble attempt at comforting her mother. Of course she was worried! How could she not, when her own daughter was battling for her life?

Sally let a dry sob and nodded bitterly.

Shawn, who was standing aside, brutally exploded. He could no longer suppress his fury. Pointing accusingly at Henry and Sally, he roared, "Why couldn't you take care of Carol? How could you let her do such a stupid thing?"

Henry and Sally first bore Shawn's accusation silently. Then, after a long, painful pause, Henry began to explain himself. "After I took Carol away from your wedding and went back home, she locked herself in her room and refused to come downstairs for dinner."

He took a deep breath and continued, "Your mother was worried that she would be hungry, so she found the key and opened the door of Carol's room. She didn't expect that... The...the sheet was stained with blood. Then we found that she... She cut her wrist and committed suicide. "

Henry's explanation did not satisfy Shawn. Frowning and pursing his thin lips into a straight line, he stared at the light of the emergency room. There was no light in his deep black eyes, no expression on his face.

They waited in the thick tension for what seemed hours. Then, the door of the emergency room opened and Carol was wheeled out. They all jumped on their feet.

"Doctor, how is my daughter?" Henry asked.

"The patient is no longer in danger, but she is still in a coma. She will wake up after a period of time. Now we are transferring her to the general ward. If nothing happens in another two days, she can be discharged." The doctor seemed unfazed, almost bored.

Relief poured over Henry. He could have hugged him. "Thank you, doctor."
