Chapter 8 Miscarriage

The air inside the ward was filled with the pungent smell of disinfectants. In the middle was a large bed where Rose lay with her eyes closed. She was awake, but her body felt so numb all over. She hated the hospital the most, especially its suffocating atmosphere.

Her mother died in the emergency room of the hospital, and it was one of her worst nightmares. And now, her baby was also taken away from her in the hospital.

It had disappeared just like that. She didn't even get the chance to see how her baby looked like.

Rose touched her flat belly with trembling hands while listening to the conversation outside the ward.

"Having a miscarriage is one of the most difficult things for women. The patient needs to have a good rest. It will take some time for her to recover, so please take good care of her. As she is emotionally unstable and in low spirits, she needs emotional support. Also, pay more attention to her diet and activities. In her current state, she is very prone to depression."

"Okay, doctor. Thank you." Burke's voice was deep and cold.

The door of the ward was ajar, so Rose clearly heard everything that the doctor said. A few moments later, she heard some light footsteps coming towards her bed. She closed her eyes tighter. If possible, she didn't want to see Burke's face now.

Rose felt a shadow covered her, and the smell of his aftershave infiltrated her nostrils, making her nose feel sore. Actually, she used to love the smell of his aftershave that she even secretly bought a bottle for herself. Every time he was not at home, she would apply it on her clothes to make her feel his presence. She loved him so much that she always wanted to be attached to him.

But recently, the scent of the aftershave she smelled from him was mixed with a woman's perfume. It was a scent of perfume that was definitely not hers.

Rose felt his rough hand on her belly, covered by the thick quilt and her clothes.

All of a sudden, she felt nauseous.

Rose opened her eyes and shook off Burke's hand, ignoring the stunned look on his face. She then got out of bed, rushed into the bathroom, and retched on the washbasin.

When she felt a little better, she raised her head and smoothed away the hair on her forehead. She stared at her reflection in the mirror and realized how pale and haggard she looked. Then she saw Burke standing behind her, looking very worried.

She was surprised that the man who had always been cold to her also worried about her.

"Rose..." Burke called out softly as he tried to hold her.

"Don't touch me!" she snapped. Rose lost control of herself. She pushed his hands away. She was a little hysterical, so her elbow accidentally hit the corner of the sink.

She grunted as the pain seemed to have reached her bones.

"What are you doing?" Burke asked angrily. He pulled her arm and rolled up the sleeve of her hospital gown to check if she had an injury.

His voice and the expression on his face were full of concern. Even he didn't notice how anxious he was.

If it was before, Rose would have been overwhelmed by happiness. However, after losing her child, his presence now just made her feel sick.

He indirectly killed her child. And now, he was pretending to care for her.

"Stay away from me. You make me feel sick," Rose said through clenched teeth.

She looked at him calmly, but her voice was filled with disgust.

Burke's hands froze in midair. He was standing against the light, so it was hard to see the expression on his face. Without a word, he bent over and picked her up, letting her kick and struggle in his arms.

"Burke, let me go!" Rose screamed, struggled, and pulled his shirt. But he was too strong that she couldn't make him stagger at all.

Eventually, her efforts to break free from him became futile. She was still very weak, so she was no match for him. Her hands drooped feebly, and tears quietly streamed down her face, wetting Burke's shirt.

Burke felt like her cold tears were drowning his heart.

He subconsciously whispered, "I think it's only good that the baby is gone."

His voice was very low, but Rose clearly heard what he said. And she felt like thousands of arrows pierced through her heart. If only she could die at this moment.

Although she knew that he didn't want a child from the very start, she still didn't expect that he would have the heart to say those words to her.

Did he also wish for their child to die?

With tears still gushing out of her eyes, Rose burst into grim laughter. After a short while, she covered her belly with her trembling hands and fell silent.

"Rose, what's wrong? Do you feel uncomfortable again?"

Burke's forehead creased into a deep frown as he carefully put her down on the bed. He turned around and was about to walk out of the ward to call the doctor when she suddenly said, "Burke, I want a divorce."

His body froze for a moment. Shock and disbelief were written all over his face when he turned around to look at her. Then gradually, he returned to his usual coldness.

"Divorce? No, Rose. I'm telling you, don't even think about it."

He then turned around and walked out of the ward, without even giving Rose a chance to retort.

"Mom... Mom..." Rose heard a child's voice calling out while she was walking in the dark corridor.

She looked around but found nothing.

"Mom, I am here!"

Rose turned around and saw a child staggering towards her while waving his chubby little hand.

Joy filled her heart in an instant. She rushed over and hugged the child. But much to her dismay, the child's body just vanished into thin air. She wasn't even able to touch him.

"Baby..." Rose suddenly woke up with tears streaming down her face. When she opened her eyes, she found out that she was still in her cold ward. Her baby wasn't there at all. Then the reality slowly came to her. Her baby had gone for good a few days ago.

"Rose, are you awake?"

Rose heard a clear male voice beside her bed. When she turned her head, she saw Xavier Yang smiling at her. His fair face was a little pinkish.

"Xavier? Why are you here?" she asked while rubbing her aching forehead. She slowly sat upright and propped up herself by pillows. Rose wondered how Xavier Yang found out that she was in the hospital. As far as she could remember, the Gu Family used their power and connections to suppress the news of her miscarriage. Only a few of them knew about it.

"Burke told me that you've been bored and lonely being alone here and asked me to accompany you, so I came over immediately. You were still asleep when I arrived, so I didn't wake you up. I just told the nurse to leave first." While talking, Xavier Yang fixed the pillows behind her to make her feel more uncomfortable.

Upon hearing Burke's name, Rose's expression darkened at once. She just lowered her head without saying a word.

Xavier Yang was Burke's best friend. The Yang Family and the Gu Family were old family friends. When he was a child, Xavier Yang's parents were always busy with business, so they often let him stay in the Gu Family. He had spent most of his time with Burke, who was three years older than him. Their relationship got deeper until they started to treat each other as brothers. Up until now, their friendship went smoothly. They never had any misunderstandings. Burke had also helped him a lot, especially with his family issues.

When Burke and Rose got married, Xavier Yang also became close to Rose. They had treated each other as siblings.

And now that he was here, she knew that Burke asked for his help to persuade her.
