Chapter 4 She Was Pregnant

Rose felt like she had fallen into the depth of the darkest sea. And when she tried to rise to the surface, she discovered that she could only float in the middle of the deep blue water. There was no lighthouse to light up her surroundings. The starless sky was also very dark. She wanted to swim, but some seaweeds tethered her limbs, dragging her back to the bottom of the sea. She struggled, but salty water only infiltrated her nose. Then all of a sudden, she heard someone calling her in the distance.

"Rose? Rose?" It was her father's steady warm voice.

She tried to answer, but no voice came out of her mouth. It was as if a pair of invisible hands were strangling her.

Rose heard a sob of a woman.

She looked around, and in the darkness, she saw a woman with a vague face. The young woman was crying while swimming towards her.

As the young woman got closer, Rose got a clear view of her face. She had long hair, brown eyes, and a gloomy facial expression. Looking into the young woman's pale face, Rose realized that she was her.

She gasped in horror as she suddenly woke up.

Her widely opened eyes stared blankly at the white ceiling.

Then the pungent smell of disinfectants penetrated her nostrils.

"Are you awake?" Rose heard someone asking her.

She turned around and saw that it was the doctor, who was standing beside her bed.

"What happened to me?" Rose was shocked to hear her own hoarse voice.

"Nothing serious. Perhaps you've gotten too scared that you passed out. Let's just wait for your intravenous infusion to finish, then you can go home. And by the way, take care of yourself and the baby in your belly."

"Baby?" Rose muttered. She wasn't sure if she heard the doctor's words correctly.

"Yes. You are three weeks pregnant. And you must know that the first trimester is the most crucial stage in a woman's pregnancy. You have to be more careful. You look so pale and weak, so you need to rest well. Don't stress yourself, especially your mind." The doctor gave more instructions and bits of advice, but Rose didn't hear all of them. Her mind was in a total mess.

Was fate playing with her?

Why did she get pregnant?

Rose subconsciously rested her hand on her flat belly. She still couldn't believe that there was already a little life throbbing inside it. She was pregnant with Burke's child. But he had someone else in his heart.

He might not even acknowledge this baby.

This was ridiculous!

Rose closed her eyes. A self-mocking smile appeared on her face. Then all of a sudden, she remembered what happened last night.

"Doc, excuse me. A man was with me last night. How is he?"

"Oh, he is out of danger now. His ward is on the third floor. Actually, he woke up just now and clamored that he wanted to leave, saying that he couldn't afford to stay in the hospital. But we couldn't allow him to go. He couldn't even walk steadily."

"Poor guy..." Rose murmured.

"Why are there too many poor people in this world?" The doctor closed the medical chart in his hand and said, "Each individual has their own difficulties." He then walked out of the ward.

Left alone, Rose took a deep breath and glanced at the bag of fluid hung on a pole beside her bed. She checked her phone in her handbag, and it was already dead.

Somehow, she felt relieved that her wallet was still there. She could pay a taxi to take her home.

Indeed, there were so many poor people in the world, and she was one of them.

But she didn't have time to feel sorry for herself anymore.

Rose went to the third floor to check on the man she had saved last night. But she didn't enter his ward. She just looked at him from the door.

The man was Zack Lou.

Such an imposing name but penniless.

After making sure that Zack Lou was okay, Rose went downstairs to pay her bill at the cashier. She also paid his medical expenses, enough until he could fully recover.

She was glad that she could at least help him. Her mother had always told her to extend help to others as much as she could. They didn't need to be rich to help.

Unfortunately, her mother left this world too soon.

Rose tried her best to conceal the distress in her eyes and walked out of the hospital.

When she was standing by the hospital gate, a taxi pulled over in front of her. She opened the backseat door and got in at once. The driver looked at her exhausted face through the rearview mirror and asked, "Where are you going?"

"Home," she murmured. She leaned against the car window and told the driver her address.

Rose felt too tired, so she closed her eyes.

All of a sudden, she felt like she was standing in the middle of an intersection. She didn't know which road to choose from.

All the dreams she had built in her childhood had shattered into pieces in a short time.

Her father was jailed, and her mother died. So the Lin Family had totally broken down. Then there was Burke, who reached out his hands to her. She took him as her life-saver. But she hadn't expected that when she accepted his hands, she had stepped into a dark trap.

Now, she was in a mess.

Perhaps whatever she and Burke had didn't mean anything to him.

After all, she was just a partner to him, wasn't she? She should have known it already when he handed her the contract.

Burke had given her the title of Mrs. Gu for only two years.

"We're here." The driver's gentle voice interrupted Rose's train of thoughts. She was too preoccupied that she didn't notice that the taxi had already stopped.

She opened her eyes and was about to pay, but she was stunned when she saw a familiar view outside.

It turned out, the address she had given the driver was the Lin Family's villa. But this house wasn't hers anymore. She spent more than twenty years of her life in this place, but it was suddenly taken away from her.

Feeling depressed, Rose lowered her head to hide the tears that were about to fall.

She had lived in Burke's villa for a year now, but she still hadn't gotten used to it. She tried to convince herself that it was her new home, but she just couldn't feel it in her heart.

"Hello?" the taxi driver kindly called out to her again.

"I'm sorry. Please take me to another place." Rose raised her head and

smiled at the driver apologetically.

When she opened the door, she saw a pair of black leather shoes in the hallway. 'Is he home?' she wondered in her mind.

She looked up at the clock on the wall. It showed it was half-past eight. Normally, he should have gone to work by this time.

Rose dragged her tired body into the living room and sank on the couch. She felt a sharp pang on her back.

"So, you didn't forget where your home is?" She heard a cold and angry voice from behind.

Rose looked around and finally saw Burke sitting in an armchair at the corner of the living room. It was only then that she noticed that the curtains were still closed. Although the sun was already shining brightly outside, it was a bit dark inside, so she couldn't clearly see his face. But she knew that he was angry.

Since they lived together, Rose did her best to please Burke and be a satisfying wife to him. For one year, she carefully observed what were his likes and dislikes and kept them all in mind. She tried not to anger him, hoping that gradually, the icy wall between them would finally break, and they could become a typical couple.

But it wasn't as easy as she thought.

Over the year, Burke had never changed even a bit. He remained as the powerful and ruthless CEO of the Gu Group and a cold husband in their marriage.

But despite his coldness, he had always been a good provider to her. He had given her everything, except for his love.

"Say something," Burke ordered coldly. He stood up, looked at her sharply, and asked, "Where did you spend the night?"

Last night, he tried to finish his work as early as possible and went home, only to find out that there was no one at home. He looked for her the whole night and only found her broken car on the road. Thinking that she might have gotten into an accident almost drove him crazy.

And now that she was standing in front of him, she just lowered her head and said nothing. When he noticed her disheveled hair, a bad hunch occurred to him, and a deep frown showed on his face.

"Last night, I..." Rose stammered.

She didn't know how to tell Burke about what happened last night. Should she tell him that her car broke in the middle of the road, she saved someone and spent the night in the hospital?

While she was still organizing the words in her mind, Burke suddenly sneered, "Well done, Rose. I think I've really underestimated you. Your phone was off the whole night, and you were out there having fun with someone else."

His voice was full of sarcasm and doubt.

"Burke, it's not like that. My phone ran out of battery last night and... " Rose lost the courage to finish her words when she met his cold eyes, so she lowered her head again. She was too heartbroken, because Burke was questioning her in a way that he seemed to be accusing her of something.

Although he was just her nominal husband, she didn't expect him to be this doubtful to her.

He didn't trust her at all.

"Rose, I won't force you to tell me who you have hung out with last night. But you have to always remember that you are still my wife. Don't disgrace my family name." He reached out his hand, held her chin, and forced her to look at him.
