Chapter 6 A Fight

On their way to the Gu Family's villa, the atmosphere inside the car was dull and stiff. Rose was sitting beside Burke in the backseat. But she had been looking at the window, watching the scenery outside all the while with a heavy heart.

Burke, on the other hand, leaned against the seat and closed his eyes to rest.

The driver was quietly glancing at them through the rearview mirror from time to time. He couldn't help thinking inwardly, 'In everyone's eyes, Mr. Gu was the hero who saved Mrs. Gu when her family had a disaster. He timely reached out to her and gave her a grand wedding. But in reality, it seems that Mr. and Mrs. Gu don't get along very well.'

"Where have you been last night?" Rose finally asked, breaking the prolonged silence.

It wasn't the first time that Burke stayed out all night. But he would usually inform her in advance if he couldn't come home.

Only last night that he didn't.

But even if he wouldn't tell her, she could already guess where he had spent the night. She could smell the strong perfume on him, which was the same scent she had smelled last time.

Maybe he went to see Amanda again.

Amanda was the woman he truly loved, while Rose was just his dispensable wife.

There was another suffocating silence between them. When she noticed that he didn't answer, she turned her head to look at him.

Burke was still leaning against the seat with his eyes closed. But perhaps he felt her gaze, so he spoke gently, "I don't have to tell you where I am all the time."

"Burke..." Rose took a deep breath to control her emotions. "I am still your wife. I also have the right to... "

"Rose," he interrupted her impatiently. "You know what our relationship is. Just perform your duties as my wife, and do not interfere with my business."

Rose suddenly felt a sharp pang in her heart.

He was right. She should not forget that she was just his nominal wife. They had a two-year contract, and once it ended, so would their relationship.

In Burke's eyes, she was just a nobody.

But what about the child in her belly?

As she gently touched her abdomen, she looked outside the window again, secretly wiping the tears from the corner of her eyes.

Burke only wanted her to perform her duties as his wife. No more, no less. He didn't intend to teach himself to love her.

When the car arrived at the courtyard of the Gu Family's villa, Burke got off the car and strode towards the hallway, leaving Rose behind.

Rose picked up her pace to catch up with him.

He had never treated her like a real gentleman should do. Every time they walked together, he would always leave her behind as if he didn't really care about her.

And she seemed to have also gotten used to it, watching his back and chasing after him.

Burke had a broad and muscular back. A back that a woman could rely on.

But it didn't belong to Rose. It didn't even belong to the child in her belly.

She looked down sadly. And much to her surprise, she bumped into that back that she had been staring at just now.

He turned around, frowned, and snapped, "Are you blind?"

Without saying anything, she just covered her nose that felt a little painful when it hit his back.

"Here you go again," Burke suddenly complained while scratching his head. "Will you please stop putting up such a pitiful look on your face? You will only give Grandma the impression that I am bullying you."

The moment he finished his words, his grandmother walked out of the door. She smiled from ear to ear at the sight of him.

"Hey, you brat! Finally, you have come to see me."

Burke immediately changed the expression on his face. His gloomy look was replaced by a gentle one.

His grandmother's smile brightened more when she saw Rose behind him. She held Rose's hand and said, "Come here. I've missed my granddaughter-in-law so much. Look at you. You are getting more and more beautiful. Come and visit me more often whenever you're free, okay?"

"Okay, Grandma," Rose replied with a smile.

She then walked with Burke's grandmother to the living room, hand in hand.

Since Burke's grandmother had treated her well from the time she got married to Burke, she respected her and the whole Gu Family so much.

Burke's grandmother had shown her genuine love.

As they reached the spacious living room, a sweet scent of perfume penetrated Rose's nostrils. When she turned her head, she saw Burke's mother, Sue Huo, gracefully walking down the stairs. Seeing that she and Burke had arrived, Sue Huo smiled at Burke, glanced at her coldly, and sat down with an expressionless face.

Sue Huo was a delicate woman. Although she was almost fifty years old, she was still beautiful and well-dressed. She was a perfect image of an affluent woman, full of charm and elegance.

But she was now a widow.

Burke's father, the late chairman of the Long Group, had died in a car accident one year ago.

It was such a pity that she had lost her husband so early.

Sue Huo felt that someone was looking at her, so she turned her head and met Rose's eyes. She looked at Rose with eyes full of coldness and disdain.

She hated Rose.

Rose felt it, but she couldn't tell the reason why.

She had tried her best to please Sue Huo, but it didn't seem to work. Sue Huo's resentment towards her was deep-rooted and had reached her bones.

"Since everyone is here, let's start our lunch," Burke's grandmother said as she led the way to the dining room and motioned the servant to serve the dishes.

"Grandma, why are you going to start without me?" A sweet voice suddenly came in.

Everyone turned to look at the door and saw a beautiful woman in an elegant dress and a pair of high heels. Her long hair swayed as she walked towards them with a smile on her face.

Rose's body stiffened at once when she saw Amanda.

It never occurred to her that Amanda was also invited to the family lunch.

And from the way she looked right now, it seemed that she had prepared for this occasion long ago.

Amanda came today to deliberately provoke Rose.

She naturally sat beside Burke and whispered something in his ear. His expression turned grim, and it seemed to have acquiesced her to hold his arm.

They looked so intimate.

Rose clenched her fists, and her face turned pale. She glared at Burke and Amanda, who were sitting opposite her. Before Burke's grandmother could say anything, she stood up and looked at Amanda's hands around Burke's arm.

She then said, "Amanda, don't go too far!"

"Rose, what are you talking about? I don't understand," Amanda retorted as she opened her eyes wide in surprise and stared at Rose with an innocent look.

"What do you think you're doing here? This is the family lunch," Burke's grandmother suddenly interrupted. She stomped her walking stick on the floor and asked the butler, "Lin, are the guards by the gate all dead? Who let this woman in?"

Lin, who was standing at the side, felt a little embarrassed. His men had made a mistake, and he ended up as the one being scolded.

"Grandma, when Burke and I were still together in the past, I used to join the Gu Family's meals. You liked me so much at that time. Did I do something that made you dislike me?" Amanda said as tears welled up in her eyes.

That was actually true. Before Burke and Rose got married, he had occasionally brought Amanda to their villa to have dinner with the Gu Family. But it didn't mean that Burke's grandmother already liked Amanda. Burke's grandmother was only worried that he was still single in his thirties, and she was so eager to have a great-grandson. So even though she didn't like Amanda, she had to turn a blind eye and pretended to be nice to Amanda.

That was why she was so happy when Burke finally decided to marry Rose. But she didn't expect that Amanda was still after Burke until now.
