Chapter 10 Arrogant in Happiness

Helen was so clever that she knew she should be absent. Before leaving, she winked at Aaron and whispered in his ear, "You must be nice to Irene."

There was nothing wrong with Helen's words, but there was just something wrong when they was said about a man and woman.

Irene looked like she was having a hard time with packing, so Aaron went to her. He asked her softly, "Do you need any help?"

"No, thank you. I'll be fine in a minute." Irene suddenly stood up and turned, smacking straight into Aaron's hard chest.

Whoa! That was one strong chest.

If she didn't know any better, she would have thought her nose was broken by his hard chest. When she raised her head, she saw his eyes were already watching her. From his chest, she could see how perfect his face was.

The realization made her shy. With a blush, she grabbed the hem of her clothes, and softly said, "No, I can do it by myself."

It was a little hot that day. The electric fan in their room had been taken away by the Office of Academic Affairs. She was starting to feel the sweat over her forehead. Several drops slithered down to her cheeks, then to her chest.

Her fair skin shimmering in sweat made her look all supple and inviting.

Anyone would have been bowled over by how attractive she looked now, including Aaron.

But Aaron had a strong self-control.

"I'm your husband. No matter what happens, I would always try to help you. Little girl, it's obvious that you have never been doted on by others."

He tilted her chin up and said, "Go sit on your bed and I'll clean up a bit over here."

Under his spellbinding words, Irene followed him. She sat down and watched his busy figure clean around her room. He was the first person who had ever acknowledged how unloved she was.

Irene's story was tragic.

Her father passed away at a young age. Her mother forced her to work hard and her sister bullied her. She couldn't have afforded to go to college without her aunt's help. Her relationship with Jonny had lasted for years but the entire time, she felt as if she were his maid, not his girlfriend.

So Aaron was right. She indeed had never been doted by anyone.

Feeling a little sore, she sniffled. She tried so hard to hold back the tears. Foolishly, she asked in a small voice, "Am I a loser?"

Aaron's head snapped at Irene's at her words. He suddenly realized that he showed up too late.

He stopped whatever he was doing and went to her. He slowly crouched down and stared at her watery eyes.

He cupped his big hands around her jaw and neck, holding her face gently and bringing her forehead down to his.

"Irene, don't think about the past. You have me now. I will make you a woman who is arrogant in her happiness. The world would envy you."

Irene was about to cry more when she realized something.

What did his words mean?

That didn't sound like a line from any show.

"What do you mean by that? Arrogant in happiness? You're only a driver. You can make me live a comfortable life at the most. How would I become arrogant?" Irene asked as she wiped away her tears.

"But don't worry. I don't need you to support me. I've always had myself. My skills are more than enough to get me by. When my father was dying, he gave me our family's secret manual. He said that as long as I learned everything from it, I would leave a comfortable life."

"Secret manual?

What is this secret manual?" Aaron asked.

"It's a book that contains how we cook our noodles. It's a family secret," Irene answered.

Her words shocked Aaron and tickled him funny.

He smirked awkwardly and asked, "Do you need to use the secret manual to cook noodles?"

"Yes! Cooking noodles is actually complicated. What kind of flour to use, how much water do I need, and so on. The secret manual contains the answer to all those questions and more." Irene laughed humorlessly. "So you married a money stretcher. Does that make you happy?"

After saying the words, Irene felt ashamed for herself for even saying that.

How could she say she was a money stretcher in front of Aaron?

Aaron laughed at her antics. "Yes, I married a money stretcher."

"But..." Irene stopped laughing. She lowered her head slowly, as if she did something wrong. "There's something I need to tell you."
