"Don't call me 'ma'am.' Call me 'the big lady.'"
Eve froze. She thought Rose was just some kind-hearted middle-aged woman. She was so wrong.
"Okay... the big lady," Eve replied and went straight to the kitchen.
"Because of her, I can't go shopping today, ugh..." Rose muttered, standing by the cabinet filled with Xyla's antiques.
She stared at the items with a glint in her eyes. "Xyla said these cost hundreds of millions. What a waste of money, buying stuff like this."
The old woman really was kind of crazy. She didn't know Xyla bought the antiques as an investment, to resell later at a higher price, and also because she liked collecting them.
"Careful, don't break it, big lady... I mean, ma'am," Eve said, holding a tray of sweet red drinks.
"Ugh, you lowly maid. I know, idiot!" Rose snapped.
Eve stayed silent.
"Put the drink over there. And where are the snacks?" Rose sneered again. Eve went back to the kitchen.
Ten minutes passed.
Eve came back with a tray of snacks. From a distance, she noticed Rose putting something into her own pocket.
'Really suspicious,' Eve thought.
"Big lady, the food and drinks are ready," Eve said, still holding the tray.
"Now get out of my sight before I fire you!" Rose said, bossing her around.
Eve left immediately.
The girl went to sit in the backyard garden.
"Why would Xyla want a mother-in-law like her? Or... maybe Xyla was tricked?" Eve muttered, thinking all sorts of things.
Xyla and Eve had known each other for a long time. Xyla had once saved her from being sent off as an illegal migrant worker and almost falling victim to human trafficking. She nearly became a prostitute. That happened a year ago.
'Should I tell Xyla about her mother-in-law's true nature?' Eve wondered.
'Especially since she just took one of Xyla's antiques.' Eve started to feel unsure.
She glanced at the clock. It was already noon. She had to make lunch for Rose before she got scolded again.
"Eve, I'm not eating at home. I'm going out," Rose said, putting on her clothes and approaching Eve, who had just finished cooking.
"What about this, big lady?" Eve asked.
"You eat it yourself. Too much trouble!" Rose snapped.
---
"How's it at home, Eve? Is my mother-in-law okay? You taking care of her?" Xyla asked over the phone.
She was standing on the balcony of a resort overlooking the vast ocean. The gentle breeze blew her brown-black hair, making her even more beautiful.
"...Thanks, Eve. Please take good care of her. Maybe we'll be back in two days," Xyla replied.
'Hope Mama doesn't do anything weird at home,' Damian thought. He was worried Rose might steal Xyla's stuff again.
The call ended.
"Who were you calling, babe?" Damian asked, pretending he didn't know.
"Eve, our new maid. I asked her to take care of Mama," Xyla said with a smile.
Damian just nodded, holding Xyla's hand and kissing it softly.
"How about we go shopping now? Also get some souvenirs for Mama," Xyla suggested.
"Good idea, babe," Damian replied excitedly.
It had been a while since he shopped for branded stuff. 'Ivy asked for a diamond ring, how could I ask Xyla for it?' Damian thought.
His salary as a factory worker was low, even though he was married to the factory owner's daughter. Why was he still a regular employee?
'Damn it,' Damian muttered to himself.
"What's wrong, babe? Why are you spacing out?" Xyla asked as they drove to a nearby mall.
"Ahh... hmm, I'm fine," Damian replied softly.
"Babe, can I borrow your money to start a business?" Damian asked after a moment.
Xyla smiled. "Of course! Why ask permission? My money is yours too," she said, putting Damian at ease.
"...What business and how much do you need?" Xyla asked curiously.
"$10,000, babe. I wanna invest," Damian said casually.
"$10,000 for fried food? That's a lot!" Xyla exclaimed.
Damian stayed quiet, still thinking. Did she find out?
"Okay, I'll transfer it to your account," Xyla said again. Damian thought she was angry, but she wasn't.
Without hesitation, Xyla took her phone.
"Done, babe," she said.
'Just like that?' Damian thought.
"Thanks, my sweet wife..." Damian said, hugging her tightly.
'And so stupid!' Damian thought mischievously.
"You're welcome," Xyla said.
Damian was shocked seeing his account balance: $20,000.
"You gave me $20,000?"
"To keep you motivated, babe," Xyla smiled.
Damian kissed her lips quickly, lost in the moment.
"Good thing there's a barrier between the driver and passengers, or I'd be embarrassed," Xyla whispered.
"While there's a barrier... how about we... right here?" Damian teased, getting playful.
"Ishh, Damian, don't be crazy. We're almost there," Xyla blushed, pushing him lightly.
"...I don't wanna do it here either. It's cramped, I feel sick..." Xyla continued.
"It's fun in the car, the sensation's different, you'll get addicted," Damian teased, bringing his face close to her neck.
"Wait... you've done this before?" Xyla asked suspiciously, with a hint of jealousy.
"Yeah," Damian answered casually, remembering he had done it with Ivy in a truck before.
Xyla pulled him away and stared, confused.
"What do you mean?"
Damian panicked a little, realizing what he just said.
"Believe me... my first time was only with you, babe," Damian said, stroking her face, looking deeply into her eyes.
Xyla stared into his eyes. "Okay, I believe you. Don't joke like that again. I don't like it!" she scolded.
"Yeah, babe. Promise... don't be mad... keep smiling, my wife," Damian coaxed.
Xyla gave him her sweetest smile. "See? Now you're even prettier," Damian praised, kissing her cheek briefly.
Xyla rested her head on his shoulder. In her heart, she was endlessly grateful to have a husband like Damian, even though she didn't know how rotten he really was behind her back.

Elsewhere, Rose had just returned from shopping with tons of stuff.
"Wow... that's a lot of groceries," Eve said, peeking from behind the kitchen wall.
"Eve!!!" Rose yelled.
"Eve!!" she yelled again, louder this time.
Eve rushed over. "Yes, big lady," she said.
"Aishhh... where have you been? Don't you have ears? I've been calling your name!" Rose snapped.
'Called twice, and she's already mad,' Eve thought.
"Why are you glaring at me?! Want me to fire you or what?!" Rose threatened.
"Sorry, big lady. I didn't mean it."
"Too many excuses! Take all my groceries to the room!" Rose ordered, eyes sharp like a hawk.
Eve grabbed all the groceries, which were extremely heavy. 'Shopping for what? Rocks?' she thought.
"Careful, it's expensive. Even your salary for 5 years won't cover it," Rose warned.
After taking Xyla's antique urn, Rose immediately sold it and went shopping like crazy.
"Nice to have a dumb son-in-law like him," Rose muttered about Xyla.
Eve heard it all clearly.
'Xyla is too good, but Rose is really sneaky,' Eve thought.
She stared at the antique urns Rose brought, feeling even more suspicious. Rose clearly had her own plan that no one knew.
Eve took a deep breath. Her job as a new maid was going to be really tough. Besides following Rose's difficult orders, she also had to keep the house safe from Rose, who loved stealing Xyla's valuable stuff.
"Gotta be careful, Eve... don't let Rose ruin everything before Xyla gets back," she thought.
She carefully put Rose's groceries in the room as instructed, staying alert.
Meanwhile, Rose sat on the sofa, looking at her shopping haul with a sly smile.
"Hehe... everything that belongs to Xyla will be mine soon. Just gotta wait for the right time," Rose thought, scanning the house with cunning.
'Once Damian gets Xyla pregnant, I'll be rich,' she added in her head.
To be continued...
