Chapter 7 Making A Call To Her Husband

Downstairs, Dominic, phone pressed to his ear, was speaking to his lawyer. "I need a divorce agreement drafted immediately."

While walking, he went over the extra clauses that needed to be added to the agreement with his lawyer. Then, from the edge of his vision, he suddenly caught sight of a figure he recognized.

Kaitlin happened to notice him at the same time, her surprise clear. "Mr. Phillips? I didn't expect to see you here."

Dominic cut off the call and answered flatly, "I'm here to see someone."

For a moment, Kaitlin thought about walking away, but then remembered that he was Khloe's brother.

So instead, she forced a polite smile. "What are the odds? I live in this building too."

Something unreadable passed over Dominic's face, his features tightening.

He gave a short nod, then gestured toward the sleek Maybach parked at the curb. "It's late, and I've got some matters to attend to. I'll be leaving now."

"Alright," Kaitlin said softly, though confusion lingered within her, and she reminded herself that it was not her concern.

Letting the matter drop, she went upstairs and unlocked her apartment door.

The second she walked inside, Sadie hurried over. "Kaitlin, remember when Nicolas told you about that strange guy asking for you?"

"I remember it. Why do you ask?" Kaitlin said.

"He showed up again today!" Sadie blurted out.

A shiver ran down Kaitlin's arms at the thought.

From behind Sadie, Nicolas leaned forward. "Relax. I already ordered a security system online. Someone's coming over tonight to set it up."

Pleased with his effort, Sadie planted a quick kiss on the corner of his mouth. "That's why I love you. Once the camera is up, let's see if that creep dares to come back."

Later that evening, after the installation was complete, Sadie sat staring at the monitor screen. Her expression turned serious. "Your family's already a headache, and your husband is never around. Nicolas and I have to leave tomorrow morning. What are you going to do?"

Kaitlin offered a faint smile. "You don't need to worry. I can handle myself now. Even if my family shows up, I won't back down. And my husband... I've never counted on him to begin with."

Sadie reached for her hand, her voice soft but insistent. "But you're still young, Kaitlin. You can't spend your life like this."

"I know." Kaitlin's smile didn't fade.

The two of them talked late into the night. By the time Kaitlin woke up, the room beside her was empty.

Reaching under her pillow for her phone, she saw it was already nine o'clock.

Sadie and Nicolas would be on their flight by now.

Kaitlin rubbed her eyes, dragged herself upright, and headed for the bathroom when her phone started buzzing.

The caller ID flashed the principal's name. She answered.

"Hello, Ms. Watson. How are you feeling? Has the swelling on your face gone down?"

"Thank you for asking, sir. My face is healing, and I'm feeling much better," Kaitlin said.

The principal responded, "That's good to hear. As for the fight, our investigation is finished. It turns out Cathryn started bullying Khloe first."

The outcome didn't surprise Kaitlin in the least.

"And what will be done about it?" she asked calmly.

"My plan was only to give Cathryn a warning, but her family has already made arrangements to transfer her to another school," the principal admitted, his voice uneasy. "You know how it is, Ms. Watson. I can't risk upsetting either the Murphy family or the Phillips family."

Kaitlin gave a short nod. "I understand. I'll leave the matter in your hands."

Relieved, the principal let out a breath. "Good. In that case, please take the time you need to rest. I'll handle the rest."

When the call ended, Kaitlin sat quietly, her thoughts tangled.

If Khloe hadn't carried the Phillips name, she probably would have been unfairly expelled despite being the victim.

Kaitlin shook her head, pushing away the thought before it dragged her down further.

She idly scrolled through her phone, and by accident, opened the text message from her husband.

He had mentioned sending her a gift, yet no delivery had ever shown up.

Had he typed the wrong number, or had the courier delivered it somewhere else?

Maybe the only way to find out was to call.

With that in mind, she pressed his number.

The line rang several times before someone finally picked up.
