Chapter 6 A Weird Stalker

Dominic went still, thrown off by the realization that Khloe's teacher had the exact same name as his wife.

Could it be...

Without a second thought, he pushed open the door, letting curiosity get the better of him.

The first thing he noticed was Kaitlin's surprised expression.

She had striking features-her eyes were bright and expressive, her skin looked soft, and there was a gentle curve to her nose and mouth. She seemed thoughtful and approachable.

He searched his memory for the one and only time he'd seen his wife, which was on their wedding day a year ago. The memory was already fading, and he couldn't match the details to the woman in front of him.

In any case, the woman he married didn't carry herself like Kaitlin. She had betrayed him, after all.

It had to be nothing more than a coincidence-a shared name and nothing else.

Meanwhile, the doctor, oblivious to what was going on in Dominic's mind, took a look at Kaitlin's injury.

"Your face is going to be alright," he said. "The cut near your mouth is shallow. I'll prescribe some ointment, but you need to stay away from spicy food for a few days so it doesn't get infected."

Once they stepped out of the office, Kaitlin offered Dominic a sheepish smile. "This isn't anything serious. I'm sorry for making you wait around, Mr. Phillips."

Dominic studied her for a moment before responding, "Don't apologize. You stepped in for Khloe, and I appreciate that. Let's grab your medicine."

She nodded. "Thank you."

After picking up the medication, Kaitlin tried to gently send him on his way. "My husband is coming to get me soon, so I can manage from here."

The mention of her husband stung more than Dominic expected.

All this time, Khloe had gone on and on about Kaitlin, hinting he should get to know her. He'd just assumed she was single.

Hearing that she was married caught him completely off guard.

The odd sense of disappointment didn't last long, and Dominic managed to steady himself. "Alright," he said.

He kept the rest to himself and walked out of the hospital without another word.

Just as he climbed behind the wheel, his phone started buzzing. It was his grandmother. "Dominic, you've been back for two days now. Why haven't you brought your wife to visit me yet?"

She sounded impatient. Dominic had told her he got married a year ago, but she still hadn't met his wife in person.

Her suspicion came through loud and clear. "You're not lying to me, are you?"

There was a sharp edge of doubt in her tone, so clear it was impossible to miss. A wave of frustration washed over Dominic as he said, "I'm telling the truth. I really am married."

Finally content, she eased her tone and said, "Alright then, make sure you bring your wife to see me next week, or I'll show up in your dreams every single night."

Dominic hung up, rubbing his forehead as a headache started to build.

Originally, he thought he'd come back and bring his wife home right away.

Now, nothing felt certain.

Fiddling with his tie, he started to second-guess himself.

Maybe he had jumped to the wrong conclusion about Kaitlin.

What if that man wasn't her boyfriend after all? Maybe he was just a family member, or a friend.

They had been apart for a whole year, and Dominic believed he needed answers-straight from her.

Half an hour later, he found himself standing at Kaitlin's door once again.

He pressed the doorbell and waited, expecting Kaitlin to answer.

Instead, a man stepped out, wrapped in nothing but a towel.

It was the same guy Dominic had seen before.

The tension in Dominic's eyes was obvious. "Is Kaitlin home?"

There was nothing warm or welcoming about this visit!

Nicolas instantly bristled, sizing up Dominic like he was trouble. He jumped to the worst conclusion. This had to be some weird stalker.

With a forced stern look, Nicolas asked, "Why are you looking for my girlfriend?"

Dominic didn't have to ask any more questions. The truth hit him like a slap in the face.

Kaitlin really had the nerve to move in with someone else, all while they were still married.

He couldn't believe it.

Any last bit of hope he had for their marriage disappeared right then and there. He spun around and walked straight for the elevator without looking back.

The moment Dominic was gone, Nicolas let out the breath he'd been holding.

He rushed to the kitchen and called out in a low, urgent voice, "Sadie, you have to warn Kaitlin. That strange, good-looking guy from before just showed up at the door again. I think he's following her."

Sadie leaned out, confusion written all over her face. "Are you sure?"

Nicolas thumped his chest with certainty. "No doubt about it. My read on people's never off. Good thing we decided to stay for a few extra days. Who knows what that guy might have tried if Kaitlin had been alone?"
