I followed the guy closely and tried to figure out how to dissuade him from taking me to the car dealership to spend money.
Suddenly, he received a phone call and walked away to take it. After he came back, he said, "There's an urgent matter at the company. I have to head back. We'll get the car another day. Don't worry. I'm not lying to you."
I nodded obediently.
It was better not to buy a car. I could save the 1.5 million dollars and enjoy the interest.
"What about you? Where are you headed?" he asked.
"I'm going back to work too," I replied.
I pointed to the name tag on my chest. I had noticed earlier that the guy and I worked at the same company, in the same sales department but on different floors.
I was a newly hired sales clerk, and he was a sales assistant, so we hadn't met before.
"Alright. Let's both get back to work. By the way, I wasn't joking earlier. I'll give you 1.5 million dollars to be my girlfriend for three months. Do you have any problem with that?"
"None at all!" I shook my head decisively.
For that money, I'd happily take on any role.
"Friend me on your social app," he said, showing me his QR code this time.
I did as he said.
After confirming we were friends on the social app, he quickly left.
I then rushed to the bank to see if the money was really there.
I was an adult and only trusted the money in my pocket.
After I put the bank card into the ATM, I suddenly realized that he hadn't given me the PIN.
Opening the social app, I hesitated before messaging him. "Honey, are you busy?!"
I decided to throw caution to the wind and believed that if my tone was sweet enough, my act would be convincing.
I made sure even my punctuation was flirtatious.
"Get to the point," he replied succinctly.
He probably took a moment from his busy schedule.
"Well, I wanted to know your bank card's PIN..."
"699479," he promptly replied with a string of numbers.
I was so thrilled that I almost typed out 'Love you!'
But I deleted it after hesitating for a while and replied with a simple OK emoji.
Ah, I could switch seamlessly between being a cute woman and a sophisticated one.
Wasn't this service experience worth a perfect score?
After checking the account, I found exactly 1.3 million in it.
I could only take fifty thousand a day at the most from the ATM, so all that money would be mine in less than a month.
I cheerfully went back to work and was even unconcerned about losing my attendance bonus.
Now that I had 1.5 million dollars, what was a mere attendance bonus?
As the workday ended, I was about to dash back to my shared apartment when I received a call from an unknown number.
"Who's that?" I assumed it was a delivery, as usually only delivery guys or scammers remembered my number.
"I'm your boyfriend," a lazy voice replied from the other end.
"Nonsense, I'm not seeing anyone. How can I..." I stopped abruptly and suddenly remembered my wealthy "boyfriend" and instantly changed my tone. I said softly, "I'm indeed faithful only to my boyfriend. Honey, is this your number? Why didn't you tell me earlier? Honey, do you miss me?" I asked with a sweet smile, and my voice was dripping with flattery.
My colleagues passing by couldn't help but give me strange looks, but I didn't care as I walked away.
"Honey, is there something you need?" I asked proactively.
"I am getting off work, and I suddenly realized I didn't know what to have for dinner."
"That's easy. I'll cook for you."
"Can you cook?" He seemed genuinely surprised.
To be honest, I was surprised, too. "No. But I can learn."
He was silent for a good half minute.
Just when I thought the line might have dropped, he said again, "Forget it. I'm afraid you'll blow up my kitchen. Come to the sales department entrance and meet me there. We'll go out for dinner."
"Sure. I'll be right there!"
Where else could I find such a good deal, with both a high salary and a free meal?
I ended the call and then climbed two flights of stairs to the sales department on the 22nd floor.
When I walked out of the stairwell, I saw that the employees of the department were already off work and that many people were bustling about. I stood on tiptoe and searched for my "boyfriend" in the crowd.
Although his back was to me, I was certain that it was him.
I put on a confident smile and jogged over.
I got close to the guy and stood on tiptoe and tapped his shoulder, feigning shyness. "Honey, I'm here to take you to dinner."
The guy froze for a moment and then turned around.
The next second, I couldn't maintain my smile.
Though he was handsome, he definitely wasn't my wealthy "boyfriend."
"Oh, Maverick, you already have a girlfriend? She's quite beautiful."
I realized my mistake and awkwardly stepped back. I was about to run away.
But then, a voice that made me want to cry with joy sounded behind me. "Hey, chubby woman, we just had a few hours apart, but you don't even recognize me?"
