How was I going to explain to my family that I got another man's sperm inside me? Would anyone believe that it was a mistake? I should have listened to Andrew. I shouldn't have gone with Dr Jenny's idea.
Who knows if she had planned it all along? Maybe I was her victim because I was desperate and gullible at the same time. Now, I'm intertwined in a web with Martin Harrison, of all the people in the world.
I stared at the glass of water in front of me. The transparency mocked my confusion. Dr. Jenny had begged me to stay calm, and I agreed to stay calm because she promised she had a solution for us.
I shifted in the seat, adjusting uncomfortably. "Dr Jenny, I don't have all day," I said.
"I can't apologize enough but..." she started, but I stopped her.
"Enough of the apologies. The deed has been done already. Just let me hear the solution you mentioned earlier," I said firmly.
I watched her as she inhaled loudly before exhaling. She opened the file on her desk before passing it to me. I dragged the file closer to me, curious to know what it entailed.
"That's the contract Mr Harrison mentioned earlier," she said, causing me to frown.
"And what is my business with the contract? What part of 'I'm not interested in this bullshit' is hard for you to understand?" I said, gritting my teeth.
"Mirabella, we don't have a choice here," she said with a somber tone.
"I have a choice and I have chosen to terminate the implant. I want to get rid of it and everything that relates to you and Martin Harrison," I replied, my voice firm.
"I know this is hard on you. I brought this mess to you and I take the blame for it, but I wouldn't advise you to cross Mr Harrison. You shouldn't try it," she said.
I scoffed, rolling my eyes after. "Maybe you shouldn't try me," I retorted.
"Have you forgotten that I have a husband? "Have you forgotten the type of family I got married into?" I asked her, hoping she would understand the gravity of the consequences that would befall me if I agreed to it.
I don't care about Andrew and his family. In fact, carrying another man's child is enough to get my revenge on them but... but nothing. Why didn't I think about it before? If I wanted to get the best revenge on Andrew and his family, this was the best way.
Carrying the baby of my husband's rival. What could be worse than that? "Wow," I smiled internally, hiding my newfound plan from Dr. Jenny. I will have the child for myself and that's my decision.
"About your family," Dr. Jenny started, but I raised my hand to stop her.
"Let's see what we have in the contract," I said, surprising her. I ignored the look on her face and focused on the paper in front of me.
The first section includes the well-being of the surrogate. The surrogate must be healthy and fit bullshit. The surrogate must keep the contract confidential until the termination date. Whatever.
As I continued to read, my eyes caught an interesting part. "The surrogate will have to live with Mr Harrison from the beginning of the first trimester until the baby stops breastfeeding."
What the actual fuck? Live with Mr Harrison from the beginning of the pregnancy until the baby stops breastfeeding. That's more than a year. How can I live with him for a year when I can't even stand him for a few hours?
"I don't think I can do this," I voiced out my thoughts.
"You can do it, Mirabella. You can," Dr Jenny said.
"You think I can live with that man. For what? "For a baby I never wanted," I spat as annoyance enveloped me.
"What do you mean you never wanted the baby?" she asked.
"That's not the point," I answered, dismissing her question. "The point is that this whole thing can't work. I can't live with Martin Harrison," I told her.
"You don't necessarily have to live with Mr Harrison. He is expected to provide the best accommodation for you as his surrogate," she explained.
"You should read the contract to the end," she said, causing me to continue.
After the delivery, the surrogate will be paid five million dollars and, at the end of the contract, she will be paid another five million to seal the deal.
My heart began to race and my eyes nearly popped out of their sockets. I couldn't believe my ears. Ten million dollars to carry his child. That's a lot of money.
My eyes darted towards Dr Jenny and I saw the facial expression I was waiting for. She had that 'I told you so look'.
"There's more to gain if you agree to do this," she said.
I sighed, weighing my options. If I go with this offer, I will get a whooping sum of ten million dollars and that will give me complete freedom from Andrew and his family. But how was I going to leave the house without getting caught?
If Andrew perceives anything, he would do everything in his power to sabotage my plan. And I can't ask Martin for help. I couldn't let Martin know that I am Andrew's wife. He can't find out that his surrogate is a married woman.
"Dr Jenny, this is harder than it sounds," I confessed my fears.
"I understand you and that's why I came up with a good plan," she said.
"You already have a plan?" I asked her in surprise.
"You have to keep this whole thing from your husband. I bet you will have to move out before the pregnancy starts to show," she said.
"What if everything fails? I'm not even pregnant yet. What will I do if I end up not getting pregnant? "How will I face my husband and his family?" I rained questions to her.
"Fine. Once we confirm that you are pregnant, you will sign the contract and move out of your husband's house," she said confidently.
I know I don't like my husband, but Dr. Jenny isn't even concerned about my marriage. She just wants the whole surrogate thing to work out.
"You don't even care about my marriage," I said with a frown on my face.
"Relax, Mirabella. I know your marriage to Andrew is not a love marriage. I'd followed up on you before our encounter," she confessed, wiping the frown off my face.
"What did you just say?" I asked as confusion washed over me.
"Don't worry too much about it. I'm on your side, and I'm working for your best interest," she paused, taking the contract from me.
"The whole implant was an honest mistake, but from that moment, every step we take should be a calculated one. This is your chance to have the real freedom you crave and enough money to sponsor that life," her eyes bored into my mind as she spoke.
This is deeper than I thought. This is a dangerous sea, but I'm ready to dive into it. I would rather drown than not try at all.
"Fine," I said. "I'm ready for this shit."
