Chapter 3 The New CEO

Veronica's POV

The same day in the evening.

After the day's work, I felt very tired, and wanted to close from work. Unfortunately, Darwin, the CEO, was still at the office.

I couldn't close like that because I was his secretary, and it was part of my job description to wait until he leaves.

With the fatigue sinking in, I leaned backwards on my chair while thoughts sank in within me.

Flashes of how I caught my boyfriend cheating on me wouldn't stop driving me crazy. 'The man I had loved in my life. "I hate you, Davis.' I mumbled silently.

The pain and heartbreak cut deep into me that I started shedding tears. While the tears were running down my eyes. I heard the creak on my door.

As I managed to clean the tears from my eyes, it happened that it was Chloe. And immediately she saw me, even though I disguised it as if everything was fine. She raised her tentacles to question me.

"Are you okay, Veronica?" She glared at my face.

"Yeah." I feigned a smile after that response for her to believe nothing was wrong.

"Nah, you aren't okay. Your face betrayed you. Did Davis do something wrong again?" She asked.

I furrowed my gaze on her with breath fuming out of my nostrils hurriedly. I couldn't stop the tears that flowed down my eyes that minute.

"Did he hurt you?" Chloe asked, standing on her feet.

I nodded my head several times while tears continuously rushed down my eyes. My lips wouldn't stop trembling.

"He cheated on me with his damn secretary." I spoke aloud in utter heartbreak.

Chloe moved close to me, and she pulled my head to herself. "I am sorry about this, Veronica. I didn't expect Davis to do such a thing to you." While she sympathised with me, my door creaked.

And our attention was called when Darwin stepped into my office.

"Boss!" We echoed internally, and we disbanded ourselves at once.

"What is happening here?" He said with a harsh gaze, and I rapidly cleaned my face.

Chloe froze for a while. The way she stared at Mr. Darwin and bit her lower lip. I knew she was sexually attracted to him.

"Miss Veronica, this is an office, and I do not tolerate bringing personal emotions into work." He arched his left eyebrows.

"I am sorry, sir." I apologized. Darwin reached into his suit and he dropped a white handkerchief on my desk.

When that happened, Chloe quickly walked up to Mr. Darwin. "I need a gift too. Obviously, not a white handkerchief for grief." She said.

I interpreted it as jealousy. Obviously, I wasn't interested in Darwin. Why is she acting weird?

Darwin took his leave at once. Wanting to take the white handkerchief, I realised there was something inside of it.

Unwrapping the white handkerchief from it, to my realisation, it was an invitation card.

"What's this invite for?" I thought in my head and immediately pulled out the invitation from its envelope.

"You are cordially invited to the full moon festival." That was what was written on it. I grunted inaudibly after reading through. It would be fun, and at least that will help lift the pain pressing my heart.

"What's that?" Chloe asked, clutching towards me.

I stood on my feet and showed it to her. But the way she took the invitation and the excitement on her face, I kept wondering.

"We will be heading there by 8:00 PM." I informed her.

"Nice." She smiled.

We left the office, but Chloe stayed back. On my way to my office, I met Sonia, the dispatch officer.

"Miss Veronica. I am happy to see you, because I have been searching for you all the way. Mr. Darwin asked that I give you these files to work on, and he wants it to be submitted by 10:00 am tomorrow." She said, giving me the document.

"Okay." I took it from her and flipped through the pages. "Why will he give me a task as huge as this?" I queried.

Sonia didn't say a thing. She walked off, and it's not her fault because it's none of her business.

I took the document back to my office, and immediately as I sat down, my phone started ringing out loud.

Checking it, I realised it was Lydia, the lady that invited me to the bar the other day. I picked up the call.

"Hello," I said in response.

"Veronica, I invited you the other day, and you didn't bother to show up. You should have told me you weren't coming at all." She flexed her muscles.

"I am sorry, Lydia. I came that day, but I was too overtaken with a lot of thoughts that I forgot to reach out." I spoke calmly.

"You always come up with one story or the other, Veronica." She replied angrily.

"I will make it up to you, Lydia. I promise." I spoke, trying to resolve the conflict with her.

"Better do!" She ended the call after that statement.

I grunted silently and checked the time on my phone. It's evening already. 'Won't Mr. Darwin close already?' I thought in my head, and immediately, I stood on my feet, having it in mind to ask him when he would be closing for the day.

It took me several paces, and when I got to his office, there was no one there. 'He closed already.'

With a sigh, I went home.

I got to the festival like others, and everything was going smoothly until it was around 11:00 PM.

I suddenly felt an attraction, a very strong one that dealt with my heart.

Although I just went through a heartbreak, I do not know what was wrong with me.

'It's the mate pull. Let's look for our mate." My wolf spoke to me, howling with joy.

I stood up in search of my mate only to be faced with a shock when I collided with Mr. Darwin.

"Are you my mate?" His voice was deep, and his face was very harsh.

I arched one of my eyebrows with surprise.
