Chapter 9 My Husband

ANGELA'S POV

"Banquet? What kind of banquet is that?" I asked my father, unsure of what he actually wanted from me. The man could go on his damn banquet all by himself but for some reason, he has to pull me into it. "A business partner of mine is back in the city and he wants to open up a new branch here . He is throwing a banquet to promote his new company. His son will be the CEO and he also wants to introduce him to everyone" my father explained. "I see, you can go ahead and attend by yourself then. I don't see why I need to go to something like that," I said. I would rather spend the day with my husband, why did I need to attend some rich man's banquet for his son? My father frowned, and I could tell that he was angry. I sat up on the chair immediately. I knew what this man's anger was like and I really didn't want to be on the receiving end ever in my life. "I am not here to play games with you, Angela. You are going to come with me and that's it," my father threatened me. I sighed, since I couldn't get out of it, I decided we would be doing it on my terms. "Fine. I am going to be there. But know that I will be going with my husband" I stated. "Have you lost your mind?! Are you trying to create a scandal for the company? People have not forgotten how you were in a hotel room with him just yet so don't think that......" "Dad please, if I don't show up with my husband, people are going to think that our relationship is just for show. That will be creating drama. Are you sure that you want that?" I asked my father. He looked upset, but he also knew that he could not argue with me on this. I was right. "Fine. We can do it your way, but don't think that I will let you cause trouble there. I will be keeping an eye on you and that husband of yours....." "Dad please, you can keep an eye on me all you want but I want you to know that I am the current CEO of the company. I am the only reason the company is this successful. Don't forget that we were in debt before I took over. If you are going to speak to me when we are at work, please be respectful," I said, cutting my father off. He looked like he wanted to choke me to death when I told him this, but I stared right back at him, refusing to back down. I worked hard to get to where I was in the company and nothing had come to me easily. I wasn't about to let him treat me like I didn't know what I was doing. "Well, I just hope you know what you're doing and you have the capabilities to be this arrogant, Angela. If you make a mistake, you are going to lose your position as CEO and I don't care if you're my daughter or not!" My father turned on his heels and walked away after he said this. I sighed after he was gone, I really didn't know what to do about this man. He was my father and yet....we had always been at war with each other. Why couldn't he just cut me some slack? Someone knocked on my office door just then and before I could call for the person to come in, the door was pushed open and Gary walked in. I smoked when I saw him, and I realized just then that seeing his face was enough to make me happy. At some point, I had become used to the presence of my husband and his face alone was enough to brighten up my world. He walked over to me and kissed me on the forehead. "I am really sorry about this, your dad was so rude to me all because of me. I really wish there was some way I could make this easier on you," he said to me. I shook my head, "Don't worry about it. I am fine, things are already easier on me as it is," I explained to him. "My father....he has always been that kind of man. He looks down on everyone , including me and so I hope you won't let his words get to you," I said. Gary shook his head while smiling at me. He was really understanding towards me and that just made my heart feel warm. "No, no, I understand things perfectly. I know that he's mad at you because of our marriage and he's making things hard on you because of me..." "My dad will make things hard on me regardless. Even if you didn't exist, he would still find a way to make my life hell. He believes that he's training me to be a better person or something like that," I said and shook my head. I wanted Gary to know the dynamics of our relationship so he doesn't end up blaming himself. "Are you sure?" He asked me and I nodded my head. "Yes, don't worry about it," I said. "What did he come to tell you ...anyway?" I sighed, deciding that it was better to tell Gary about the banquet now. "He wants me to go with him to some banquet. I can't believe it...he says that a former business partner is back in the city and he wants to get to know everyone so he's throwing a banquet. Since you are my husband, you'll have to go with me," I informed Gary. Gary shook his head when I told him this. "Are you sure that this is a good idea? I am not a part of your circle and I ..." "You're my husband, Gary, that is already enough," I said.
