Chapter 2 A Reluctant Union

Sebastian Moretti sat in the private jet, staring out at the endless stretch of clouds beneath him. His mind was elsewhere-far beyond the sterile luxury of the jet's interior, beyond the looming power of the Moretti empire he had inherited, and certainly beyond the woman he was now forced to marry.

Elena Cantu. The name echoed in his mind, like a curse he couldn't escape. For years, he had pushed her from his thoughts, shoving her memory into the darkest corners of his mind. She represented everything he despised-betrayal, weakness, and the destruction of everything his family had worked for.

But now, she was the key to everything.

A union between the Morettis and the Cantus was the only way to stabilize both families' positions. It was a power move, not a choice of the heart. Sebastian couldn't afford to consider anything else. His father's condition was deteriorating faster than expected, and the empire that had been the foundation of his life was now teetering on the edge of collapse. Marriage to Elena was not about love-it was about survival.

The thought tasted bitter. He had built his entire life on avoiding emotions, on remaining untouchable, and now he was being dragged into a union that would entangle him in a web of deceit, manipulation, and power struggles. Elena was no innocent bride-she was the daughter of his father's greatest enemy, and he could already feel the tension that would come with her presence in his life.

The plane descended into the darkening sky as they neared their destination-the Cantu family estate. A sprawling mansion hidden away in the hills, isolated from the rest of the world. It was a symbol of the Cantu family's wealth and power, and a reminder of the betrayal that had scarred Sebastian's past.

As the wheels of the jet touched the ground, Sebastian's chest tightened. He was not ready for this. He was not ready for Elena Cantu.

The door to the jet opened, and a gust of cold air rushed in. The estate stretched before him, shrouded in an eerie silence. The black marble façade of the mansion loomed over him, as if it were waiting, watching, for him to enter its depths. The shadows seemed to cling to the stone walls, a reflection of the dark history between the Morettis and the Cantus.

He was here for one reason-duty. Nothing else mattered.

As he stepped onto the tarmac, his bodyguard, Marco, stood beside him, his face expressionless but alert. The silence between them was suffocating. There was no comfort in these moments, only a cold, harsh reality. They were at war, and Sebastian was walking into the heart of the enemy's lair.

Inside the mansion, the air was thick with tension. The halls were dimly lit by the soft glow of chandeliers, casting long shadows across the marble floors. Servants moved in silence, as if they, too, knew the gravity of the situation. And then, as if on cue, a figure appeared at the end of the grand hallway-a woman draped in a dark, elegant gown, her silhouette cutting through the shadows like a blade.

Elena Cantu.

Sebastian's heart tightened, but his face remained impassive. She was everything he remembered-beautiful, fierce, and cold. Her dark eyes locked onto his, and for a fleeting moment, there was something in her gaze-something that made his chest tighten, something that made him wonder if she, too, felt the weight of this forced union.

"Elena," Sebastian's voice was steady, but inside, his thoughts were a storm. "We meet again."

Her lips curled into a smile, one that didn't quite reach her eyes. It was a smile of control, a smile that masked everything beneath the surface.

"Sebastian," she replied, her voice smooth, like silk-but there was a sharp edge to it, one that he knew too well. "I see you've come to fulfill your father's wishes."

There it was-the unspoken truth between them. They were both pawns in a game much larger than themselves. This marriage was not about love. It wasn't even about mutual respect. It was about survival, about protecting empires built on blood and betrayal.

"I'm here," Sebastian said flatly, his eyes never leaving hers. "And I intend to keep my word. For the family, for the empire."

A flicker of something passed through her expression-perhaps a hint of disdain, or maybe something else. Elena Cantu had never been one to hide her emotions, yet this was different. There was a coldness in her demeanor that matched his own, a shared understanding that neither of them had chosen this path, but both were bound to it.

"Then we're both trapped in this, aren't we?" Elena's words were softer now, almost as if she were speaking to herself. "But we play the game all the same."

Sebastian's gaze hardened. "We play to win."

Her lips curled upward, a more genuine smile this time, but it held a certain danger. "Indeed, we do."

He didn't know what to expect next. In his life, he had faced countless enemies-each one more dangerous than the last. But Elena was different. She was his past, his future, and now his present. She was an enemy he couldn't escape, no matter how much he tried to distance himself from her.

And for the first time in years, he felt the weight of a different kind of power-the kind that didn't come from wealth or force, but from something deeper. Something he didn't understand, but couldn't ignore.

As they walked together down the long hallway, the walls closing in around them, Sebastian knew one thing for certain: This marriage, this forced union, would not be the end of their story. It was just the beginning.

And no matter how hard he tried to avoid it, Elena Cantu would change everything.
