Eva sat in the passenger seat, still a bit dazed, and asked Josh, who was focused on driving with practiced ease, "Is it common for hotel staff to drive luxury cars like BMWs to work?"
"Borrowed it from the boss." Josh replied casually.
"But it clearly has your name on it." Eva pointed to the pendant hanging in the car.
Josh glanced at the amethyst pendant, which his mother had insisted on hanging there, now causing a bit of awkwardness.
He answered nonchalantly. "Oh, just a coincidence."
Without further response, he turned his head and saw Eva looking at him with a curious expression.
"Your boss... Is she a woman?" Eva raised an eyebrow, finding it hard not to let her imagination run wild given Josh's handsome appearance.
Josh understood what she meant and replied calmly, "You're reading too much into it."
He originally planned to take Eva to a private dining restaurant, as he was craving it too, but Eva insisted on having a cheese fondue at a crowded little place near a university.
"I used to come here often for hot pot when I was in college. I really miss it." Eva said excitedly.
Josh was still not getting used to the noisy atmosphere here, wiping the tables and stools repeatedly with napkins.
Josh knew this prestigious university was quite famous. "What was your major?"
"Nursing." Eva answered quickly.
Josh frowned, "Then how did you become a hotel inspector?"
Realizing she had let the cat out of the bag, Eva quickly forced a smile to cover it up and said, "I got interested in it later."
Her eyes flashed with panic, and she nervously brushed her bangs aside, details that didn't escape Josh's notice.
"What about you? Where did you graduate from?" Eva tried to shift the focus.
"MIT." Josh said, picking up his chopsticks to grab some food, feeling a bit hungry.
Eva widened her eyes at him. "You're... You're not joking, are you?"
The cheese fondue indeed tasted good. After swallowing, Josh wiped his mouth with a napkin like a gentleman and asked back, "What's the matter?"
Eva's mind was in turmoil. "And now you're working as a waiter? Are you crazy?"
"I got interested in it later." Josh replied, using the same reason she had given.
After the meal, Eva was keen to browse the commercial street near the university. She used to find some exquisite accessories there. Josh followed her leisurely, finding this better than being at her beck and call at the hotel.
Eva spotted an amethyst pendant at a small shop. The owner told her it was on sale for only seventy dollars. She hesitated for a moment, then pretended to be dissatisfied and put it back. "It doesn't really suit me."
Josh, standing beside her, clearly saw the joy in her eyes, which dimmed slightly upon hearing the price.
Back at the hotel that evening, as Eva changed clothes, something fell out. She picked it up and saw it was the pendant she liked but couldn't afford.
Josh must have slipped it into her pocket when she wasn't looking.
Holding the pendant to her chest, she felt a warm surge of emotion and was on the verge of tears.
Perhaps it was time to move on. What she was doing felt a bit unethical.
