The duplex with its European style was adorned with artistic wall carvings, and the central chandelier cascaded down like a princess's diamond gown. Eva stared at the presidential suite in amazement. She never dreamed that she could enjoy such treatment one day.
Trailed behind her, Josh was clearly not yet accustomed to his waiter's attire, but he discreetly observed Eva's reaction.
She seemed calm-had she stayed in such luxurious suites often?
Having confirmed the silk carpet beneath her feet was real, Eva suddenly leapt with excitement, tossing aside her bag and kicking off her shoes as she bounced around the room, inspecting every corner, rolling from the sofa to the floor.
"Wow! There's even a fully stocked minibar! Oh my gosh, these scissors are pure gold! I've never slept in such a comfortable bed in my life."
Josh quietly watched Eva's antics, sighing as he thought. "Is this some kind of test? How did their company end up hiring such an eccentric employee?"
After her spree, Eva suddenly remembered Josh's presence. She quickly composed herself, adopting a cool demeanor, and with her bear-patterned socks, she gracefully headed upstairs, casually instructing Josh, "Please bring my luggage up and fetch me a pair of slippers."
Josh took a deep breath and complied.
When he reached the upstairs room with the luggage and slippers, he found the room dark. Eva was standing on the balcony, hands resting on the railing, gazing up at the stars.
The surrounding darkness made Josh only see Eva's silhouette by the light from outside. Her sudden quietness was really something one wasn't used to.
He broke the silence. "Miss Stephens, put on your slippers first."
Eva seemed not to hear him, her eyes fixed on the bustling city and the starry sky, thoughts of her parents and herself bringing tears to her eyes.
"The view here is amazing." Eva said, trying to inject some cheer into her voice, though it was a bit forced.
Josh gently placed the slippers by her feet. "It's late. I shouldn't disturb you any longer. If you need anything, you can contact me through the service desk."
With that, he prepared to head downstairs.
The brief stint as a waiter had left him inexplicably annoyed, and he wanted to go back and rest.
"Wait. Don't leave. This place is so big, I'm scared." Eva called out to him and frankly admitted.
Josh sneered slightly, familiar with how some young women would feign helplessness to seek comfort from a good-looking man.
"Am I supposed to stay up all night guarding you?"
Josh was ready to scoff and leave if she confirmed.
"Ha-ha, I'm afraid it's not possible. I'll sleep here, and you can sleep on the downstairs sofa. If anything happens in the middle of the night, I'll call you up." Eva retorted with a cold smile.
In Josh's mind, a little figure smashed his previous fantasies with a hammer. He continued, disdainfully, "What could possibly happen?"
"You don't know there are many... " Eva seemed hesitant. Then, she wiggled her fingers in the air like a ghost, hinting that there were ghosts in many hotels.
Defeated, Josh reluctantly headed downstairs. "I understand."
"I'll have you know, I put that gold scissor under my pillow. If you try anything funny, you're dead." Eva declared before slamming the door.
Josh sat on the sofa, still in disbelief that within an hour, he had gone from CEO to a waiter, now reduced to sleeping on a sofa as a bodyguard.
Life was full of surprises, wasn't it?
