Chapter 5 5. Shadows of Doubt

ALPHA DAMON'S POV

Love demands trust, but trust becomes a gamble when secrets linger between us. How long before the divide grows too wide to cross?

*********

The sound of the children's laughter carries through the garden, drawing a rare smile to my lips. I watch from the terrace as Eli and Zane race across the grass, their sister Lily trailing behind, shouting at them to wait for her.

"Not fair!" Lily cries, huffing with indignation. "You have longer legs!"

"Then run faster!" Zane taunts, only to trip over a loose stone and tumble to the ground.

Eli doubles over with laughter, but Lily takes the opportunity to pounce on him, sending both of them sprawling. Their nanny rushes over, fussing and checking for scrapes, but the pups brush her off, too caught up in their game to care.

My heart swells as I watch them. My pups. My legacy. They are my joy and my pride, and no matter what storms I face, they remind me of what truly matters.

"Papa!" Lily's voice rings out as she spots me. She bounds toward me, her silver curls bouncing. "Come play with us!"

I crouch to catch her as she barrels into my arms. "Play what, little wolf?"

"Catch!" she exclaims, her eyes shining with excitement.

"Catch, huh?" I glance toward her brothers, who are already daring me with their smirks. "Are you sure you're ready to face me?"

Her laughter is answer enough.

Within moments, I'm chasing them through the garden, their squeals of delight echoing as they dart around bushes and trees. Eli tries to outmaneuver me, but I scoop him up effortlessly, tossing him into the air before catching him.

"Got you!" I declare triumphantly.

"You'll never catch me!" Zane shouts, but his overconfidence costs him as I lunge and grab him by the waist.

"Two down," I say, grinning. "Now, where's my little Lily?"

Her giggles give her away, and I find her hiding behind a large oak tree. She shrieks as I scoop her up, her laughter infectious.

"Not so fast, little wolf," I tease, spinning her around.

For a brief moment, all feels right in the world.

As the children play on without me, I sit on the terrace, letting the joy of the moment linger. But my thoughts drift, as they often do these days, to Nora.

She's changed.

I've known it since the day she woke from that mysterious illness. The way she looks at me, the way she pulls away from my touch-it's as if the bond we once shared has been replaced with something colder, distant.

I tell myself she's still recovering, that she needs time. And yet, there's a part of me that can't shake the feeling that something deeper is at play.

She's still an incredible mother to our pups, more devoted than ever. But with me? She's like a stranger.

Later that evening, I find her in the study, seated by the window with a letter in her hand. Her brows are furrowed, her expression guarded.

"Nora?" I say, stepping into the room.

She startles, clutching the letter tightly. "Damon."

Her tone is calm, but I catch the flicker of something in her eyes. Guilt? Fear?

"What's that?" I ask, nodding toward the letter.

"It's nothing," she replies quickly, folding the parchment and tucking it into the folds of her dress.

"Nothing?" I echo, my voice steady but probing. "Then why are you hiding it?"

"I'm not hiding anything," she says, standing abruptly. "It's just pack business."

"Pack business," I repeat, crossing my arms. "You've never kept pack matters from me before."

Her jaw tightens, and for a moment, I think she'll argue. But instead, she brushes past me, her scent lingering in the air.

"I'm tired," she says over her shoulder. "Goodnight, Damon."

I stand there, the weight of her dismissal settling over me.

In the privacy of my chambers, I wrestle with my thoughts.

Nora has always been loyal. She stood by me through every challenge, every battle, every decision that earned me the title of Alpha. But now, I feel the threads of that loyalty unraveling.

Or is it my imagination?

I want to trust her. I need to trust her. But the secrets she's keeping are a wedge between us, and I fear what might happen if I don't uncover the truth.

And yet, I can't bring myself to confront her directly.

I glance toward the adjoining door to her chambers. It's been weeks since she's come to my bed, weeks since I've felt the warmth of her touch. The distance between us grows with every passing day, and it's killing me.

Liam, my wolf, growls louder each day, missing Nora as much as I do. Liam wants me to go to her chambers now, force her to talk to me as her Alpha and, maybe, make love to her. He craves her and so do I.

Still, I decide to wait. Nora has always been strong-willed. If she's hiding something, she'll come to me when she's ready. Until then, I can only hope that the bond we once shared is enough to bring her back to me.

The next morning, I watch her from across the dining hall as she pours juice for the children, her movements graceful and precise.

She laughs at something Zane says, and the sound stirs something deep within me - a longing, an ache.

For a moment, she looks up, and our eyes meet. But the warmth I once saw in her gaze is gone, replaced by something distant, unreadable.

"Damon?"

My mother's voice pulls me from my thoughts.

"Yes?" I say, turning to her.

She gives me a knowing look, her silver hair catching the morning light. "She's different, isn't she?"

I hesitate, then nod. "She's... distant."

My mother places a hand on my arm. "Be patient with her. Whatever she's going through, she needs your support."

I nod, though her words bring little comfort.

That evening, as the pups play in the garden, I watch from the terrace, my mind racing with possibilities.

What is Nora hiding?

And how long before whatever it is comes to light?
