The voice carries an ache, laced with concern and something that feels... foreign. Love? My breath catches, and I force my eyes to flutter open.
The world comes into focus slowly, shapes and colors blending until I see them.
Three small faces hover over me, wide-eyed and filled with worry. Two boys and one girl. They don't look older than five.
I blink hard, trying to process their presence. Around them stand others-a woman with silver-streaked hair and regal features, her face etched with worry. I recognize her instantly: Grand Luna Eve, the mother of Alpha Damon Moonblood.
Beside her is another woman, younger, with kind eyes and a nurturing air about her. She's dressed plainly, perhaps a nanny.
But it's the man standing at the edge of the group that steals my breath.
"Nora," he says again, his deep voice laced with something unrecognizable. My heart stutters as I meet his gaze.
Alpha Damon Moonblood.
The Alpha of the Moonblood pack. The powerful, feared man whose name alone could silence a room. He towers over everyone, his sharp features softened by an expression of... concern?
His steel-gray eyes are locked on me, scanning my face like he's searching for something. "Are you all right?" he asks, stepping closer. His voice, though gentle, carries an unmistakable authority.
I freeze. My body reacts instinctively, fear warring with confusion. Why is he looking at me like that? Why is he calling me Nora?
The name echoes in my mind, wrong and foreign.
I push myself up, ignoring the protests from the pups who reach for me. My legs wobble as I stand, but I steady myself. My eyes dart around the room, searching for answers.
That's when I see it-a mirror on the far wall.
My breath quickens as I take a shaky step toward it, ignoring the murmurs behind me. The Grand Luna says something, her voice soft and worried, but I can't make out the words.
"Nora?" Damon's voice calls again, closer this time, but I don't stop.
I reach the mirror, and the world tilts on its axis.
The reflection staring back at me isn't mine.
The face is familiar... But it's not my face.
It's the face of Nora Moonblood, Luna of the Moonblood pack. Her beauty is ethereal, with high cheekbones, piercing silver eyes, and cascading silver hair that shimmers in the light.
My hands tremble as I touch my reflection, the cool glass grounding me in a reality I can't comprehend. The memories of my death flood back-Cain's betrayal, Claire's cruelty, the loss of my pup.
My knees buckle, but I catch myself on the edge of the mirror. The pups' voices call out behind me, their worry evident, but I can't turn around.
My mind races. This can't be real. I was Lira, a rejected mate, a failed she-wolf. How am I now this?
The realization hits me like a thunderclap.
I've been reborn.
The Moon Goddess didn't let me die. She gave me a second chance. But this time, I'm not weak. This time, I'm powerful. I'm Nora Moonblood, the Luna of the most feared pack, and mother to three pups.
My hand drops to my belly instinctively, but the swell is gone. My heart twists. The life I carried, the pup I couldn't protect-gone.
"Luna?" Damon's voice is closer now, almost directly behind me. "What's wrong? You're trembling."
I meet his gaze in the mirror, and for the first time, I see more than his reputation. His brow furrows, concern etched into his features.
"Nora, talk to me," he says, his voice softer now, almost pleading.
I turn slowly to face him, my movements measured. The pups run to me, clutching my legs, their small faces seeking reassurance. Their touch sends a wave of warmth through me, confusing and grounding me all at once.
"I..." My voice falters as I try to speak, the weight of this new reality pressing down on me.
I don't know how to answer him. How can I explain what's happening when I don't fully understand it myself?
The Grand Luna steps forward, her presence calming. "Nora, my dear," she says gently, placing a hand on my arm. "How do you feel now? You got us all so scared. We thought the worse had come."
The words "my dear" twist something in my chest. The tenderness in her voice is foreign to me, a stark contrast to the contempt I endured as Lira.
"I..." I swallow hard, struggling to find the words. "I'm just... confused."
The Grand Luna exchanges a glance with Damon, worry flickering in her eyes.
The nanny kneels to gather the pups, whispering soothing words as she ushers them away. The girl, the boldest of the three, clings to me for a moment longer before reluctantly letting go.
"We'll talk later," Damon says to his mother, his tone firm but respectful. The Grand Luna hesitates, then nods, leaving the room with the nanny and the pups.
Now it's just Damon and me.
He steps closer, his towering frame both intimidating and protective. "Nora," he says again, his voice low. "You're scaring me. What's going on?"
I stare up at him, my heart pounding. His gaze is intense, his concern raw. For a moment, I wonder what kind of bond Nora and Damon shared. Did he love her? Was he capable of love?
"I'm fine," I say finally, forcing the words out. They sound hollow even to me.
He doesn't look convinced. "You don't seem fine."
I turn away, needing space to think. My mind is a whirlwind of questions. Why did the Moon Goddess choose this body for me? What happened to the real Nora?
And most importantly... what happens now?
As I stare at the ornate room around me, the truth settles heavily in my chest. I've been given power, beauty, and a second chance.
Damon's voice cuts through my thoughts again, softer this time. "Nora... I'm here for you. Whatever it is, we'll face it together."
I clench my fists, unwilling to let the emotion in his voice sway me. I don't know this man-not truly. And yet, I'll have to play the role of his Luna, his mate, if I want to survive in this world.
My reflection catches my eye again, and I take a deep breath.
The Moon Goddess gave me a second chance-but at what cost?
