CHAPTER 4

The doctor looked at me, hesitantly.

"Sir, may I ask you, is she your relative?"

I glared at him, raising my eyebrows.

"What does that matter? Do your job and make sure it gets better. I don't accept any other option. There was no place for mistakes, not when a woman like Roxanne was at stake."

The doctor simply nodded and continued his work in awkward silence. They spent two weeks in the same routine. My life was reduced to a back and forth between the mansion and the hospital. Time seemed to freeze.

I tried to locate the jerk Thompson, but he seemed to have disappeared from the map. Luckily for me, I was now the new CEO of Roxanne Meyers' import company. That allowed me to be close to her, all the time. What an irony: a mobster at the helm of a respectable company.

The days passed slowly, and just as I was beginning to think there was no hope, something unexpected happened. I was sitting next to Roxanne, leafing through a magazine without much interest, when suddenly I noticed her fingers moving. His chest fluttered in a deep, violent breath, and with a start, he opened his eyes, panting as if he were coming back to life from the depths of a dark dream.

"Ahhhh!" An anguished groan escaped from her throat, and without thinking, I rushed out to find the doctor.

"Doctor! Doctor, Roxanne has woken up!" I shouted.

The doctor came running, followed by two nurses who rushed into the room.

"Sir, please come out," he asked me urgently.

I looked at him harshly, refusing to budge.

"No. I'm not leaving. I have to be here." My urgency to be sure that Roxanne was okay wouldn't allow me to get away from her.

"Please come out!" A nurse insisted, a hard-faced woman who worked for me. Her gaze was firm, and though he didn't utter another word, I realized that I couldn't stay.

Reluctantly, I left Roxanne's room, letting my frustration get the best of me. I sat in the chairs in the hallway, biting my nails as anxiety consumed me. I wanted to know how she was, what had happened to make her wake up like this, so abruptly.

The minutes passed like hours. Just when I thought everything was under control, a heart-wrenching scream pierced through the walls, freezing my blood. They were screaming with desperation... it was Roxanne's voice

"Where am I? Let me get out of here! please!" Roxanne's screams were desperate, and before the plea I couldn't resist and I went out to meet her, I ran to the room, regardless of the nurses stopping me.

"What's the matter, doctor?"

"Come out sir, you're disoriented, it's normal after having been unconscious for so long."

"I'm not going to leave, I'd better get her well. Or she'll see me."

After a few minutes of struggle, they managed to stabilize her, and I returned to her side. Although I was only a stranger to her, I did not remove my presence. She was completely out of place, it seemed like she had no control of any of her emotions, and the sedative was taking effect.

However, I sat next to her, saw how her eyelids fell heavily, and I had to wait again, but this time it was not long, about forty minutes later, calmer... She opened her eyes slowly and shook her head a little lost. When her eyes met mine, her expression became more confused, as if she didn't know where she was.

"Roxanne...do you hear me?" I approached her and asked her in a low tone, when she saw me, her face paled, and her surprise was evident, it was as if she had seen a ghost.

Did she know me?

"Who are you? What are you doing here? "

"Roxanne, can we talk?"

"Where do I know you from?" Her voice sounded trembling. "I've seen you before... You are..." Roxanne frowned, struggling to remember where it was familiar from. I knew it well: she was the woman I had seen leave the office the last time I went to the fertility clinic, but I wasn't sure if she recognized me.

Her breathing became irregular, and without thinking, I took her hand. I caressed her gently, trying to calm her down, even though I knew I was just a stranger to her.

"Roxanne, don't worry... Breathe, please."

"But... Tell me, what are you doing here?"
