"Please Emily, I need you to be a mother to Tracy for that two years, you're the only one she's comfortable with."
I looked at him, not saying a word. I was confused on what to say to him. I wasn't ready to be a mother to an innocent girl I would later abandon.
"I...I don't...I don't think I can do this," I said, my voice failing me.
Zach face turned sharply towards me, "What'd you mean you can't?" He turned his face back to the road. "You already signed the contract, there's no going back, you just have to find a way to make this work."
I restedy head on the side glass of the car, I sank into my thoughts, somehow, I'll have to make this work.
* * * *
We got to my place after going around the city for a little shopping. My mind had been absent throughout the whole shopping spree. Getting home, I was very exhausted, not from the shopping stress, but from mental stress. I've taken too much into my head today.
"You'll be resuming work tomorrow morning, I'll do the introduction to the workers."
He walked to the front seat of his car and brought out something inside an envelope.
"Here's my little gift to your mom." He said and stretched his hand out towards me, holding out an envelope. I stood there, speechless, I never knew this man knew how to be a gentleman.
"Thanks," I said, "but, there's no need, you've done enough today." I pushed the envelope back to him without collecting it from him.
"Well, I insist." He said with a tone of authority.
How can being so kind sound so rude. This man is one hell of a person.
I took the envelope from him and thanked him, but he didn't say a word.
He walked up to his car, looking at him from behind, I wished he wasn't as rude as he was, maybe the contract wouldn't have been an issue at all.
"Don't stay up late, work start by 9am," he said before turning in the ignition of his car. "Goodnight, love." He said and drove off.
Would he stop calling me love? I said to myself. He has a way of making me angry even when I don't want to.
I opened the envelope in my hand and saw a bundle of cash in it. I took it out, it was a bundle of $100 bills. I counted it.
$10,000!!!
My three jobs together couldn't give me 5 thousand dollars a month, and Zach was giving it to me cash!!!
How rich was this guy?!
"Let's welcome our newest member, my fiance, Emily Spencer." Zach said as he brought the introduction to an end. I watched as everyone cheerfully clapped.
"I never knew you could give speeches as good as this," I said to Zach after his speech. "Not like I expected anything less from you." I wasn't giving him a compliment, I was just saying what was piled up in my mind.
Earlier that day, I met Alfonso already at the office. Although I got to work twenty minutes early, I met Alfonso already settled down and scanning some files on his desk. He had a cup of coffee seated beside him.
"If you spend so much time on that screen, your coffee could get cold, you know." I poked my head into his office and gave him a good morning smile.
"Oh, you're here." He stood up and bowed his head a little.
"Good morning." He took his seat but this time he was looking at me.
"Good morning." I scanned his office with my eyes, it was large, fitting for the personal assistant of the CEO. He had every one of his files arranged. Such a focused young man he was.
"I won't want to be the reason your boss raises his voice at you." He suddenly stood up like he had remembered something important.
"I almost forgot, permit me to show you your office." He walked out of his chair and picked up his coffee.
Emily Spencer.
I saw a tag that had been put up just above the door to indicate my name.
Damn!
The office space was two times the size of my bedroom. It was massive. Very spacious.
"Is this my space?" I asked Alfonso who was smiling at how dumbfounded I was. Everything in the office smelt new. How much did Zach put into making this office and to think of the fact that it was just within a day.
To tip it all, there was a coffee dispenser close to a water dispenser in the office. How'd he know I love coffee?
He could be very thoughtful at times though.
My love for coffee was beyond charts.
By the time Alfonso was done showing me around, the other workers had started to arrive. There was a lively chatter going on in the general working hall.
Everyone was smiling, until the elevator door opened and Zach took his first step in. Everywhere went silent as a graveyard, everyone stood up as he walked past them.
"Good morning, sir." The workers all said in unison.
"I need every unfinished business file reported to me in the next 30 minutes." He said and walked off, not even returning the greetings.
His aura was intimidating, every worker felt like they were scared of him. He had this gigantic aura that always followed him around. His suit was chiseled at the edge, giving his shoulder a high and straight look. His strides were well paced and his well arranged hair added to his handsomeness.
He paid little or no attention to me and I wasn't bothered, not even in the slightest. He was saving me from the early morning stress. I hope I find a way to avoid him throughout the whole day.
I went into my office and sanm into my seat. I was about to go through the files in front of me when I got a call from the office line.
"Hello, Emily Spencer speaking." I said into the phone.
"Meet me at my office, Emily."
Zach.
Speak of the devil himself.
"What'd you want from me this time, you already avoided me this morning." I asked, turning my face.
"We're meeting my family today, this evening." He searched my face as if to see if there was any reaction from me, "I'll pick you up by 3."
He stood up from his seat and walked towards me. I backed off a little.
"Now let's introduce you formally to the team."
He said and walked out of his office.
