Chapter 5 The Rival

Gale and Harris were waiting in the dungeon when I arrived. King Connor wasn't around, but I was sure he ordered the guards to lock up the troublemaker. I could smell the strong scent of wolfsbane from behind the bars.

The man stood with his hands and feet shackled. The guards might have applied wolfsbane to those four bonds to weaken his Lycan. I couldn't believe a Gamma guarding the Crown Princess was that weak.

"Wake up. I know you heard me coming." I nodded to the guard to open the cell door.

"I don't want to deal with you. Leave me alone," the prisoner retorted.

"Your attitude is not that of a brave man but of a coward acting in the name of love." I approached him. "Do you think Crystal will take pity on you and run here to comfort you? Stop dreaming."

"You don't know what true love is. So, no need to lecture me on it," he mocked.

I stood close to him and looked into his eyes. "King Connor's orders are above your feelings for your secret ex-lover. You want to know the one thing beyond the king's orders?" I leaned closer and whispered, "Crystal is my second chance."

"You can't lie to me." He let out a long yawn, insulting me.

"The king wouldn't have chosen me to be his future son-in-law if I were a liar. Have you forgotten which of us he locked up in this dark place?" I continued. "You'll see proof that Crystal and I are destined mates in seven months."

I smirked. "Listen carefully. You dare breathe the same air as her, your life will be over. I forgive you for your perversion earlier, but not if you do it again. Crystal is mine."

I turned around. Gale and Harris looked at me questioningly. They must have been in disbelief to hear me say those words.

"What do you mean by seven months?" The man finally understood what I meant. "You're lying. You're not Crystal's destined mate!"

"Watch your mouth, assh*le! You don't deserve to mention Her Royal Highness' name with your filthy mouth! She is Princess Crystal!" Gale barked.

"Relax, buddy." I placed my hand on the Beta's chest. "We'd better get back now. I don't want my fiancée to wake up and find me not lying by her side."

I turned to the bastard. "Be glad Crystal and I don't live here, or you'd suffer hearing her screaming my name every night in our bed."

The man growled. He tried to free himself from the shackles on his hands and feet but failed. It didn't take long for him to give up as he ran out of strength against the poison in the shackles.

'I need an explanation, Boaz,' Gale demanded through the mind link as we exited the dungeon.

'I have no obligation to explain anything to you,' I replied.

"Wait, Boaz." Harris stood in front of me. He looked at me seriously. "I need an explanation."

Gale stood at his side and looked at me, crossing his arms over his chest. "Me too."

I reluctantly stopped. "I don't know how Orion sensed it, but he said Crystal was in danger. When I arrived near the Princess's room, he stood too close to her and touched her. You know the rest of the story."

Thankfully, Gale and Harris followed me and detained the man. So, he didn't interrupt when my mate and I got to know each other more intimately. Crystal's room was too close to her parents' suite. Therefore, I brought her to my chamber.

"That's a new development, Boaz. I'm glad to hear it." Harris smiled.

"Me too." Gale patted my shoulder.

Unfortunately, I didn't find Crystal lying on my bed. It looked like she had rushed back to her room after waking up. I sat on the edge of the bed and smiled. She could run away today, but not on any other day.

I got ready to attend dinner. The servants escorted me and my companions to the banquet hall. The king and queen were in the room. What highly ethical hosts. They greeted us kindly.

"Since my daughter hasn't arrived yet, this is a good time to discuss the incident," the king said, starting our conversation.

"Your Majesty, I understand Princess Crystal loves a man. She is not a child and is of age to have a lover. Please punish the man according to the laws of the capital. Princess Crystal rejected him, but he was unwilling to part with her," I explained.

"I know I didn't choose the wrong husband for my daughter." The king smiled proudly. "Don't worry. I will punish Drake."

"Crystal is not easy to read, but she is a good woman. I hope you will be patient with her," the queen said. "Ah, here she comes."

I turned toward the door. My heart beat wildly at how beautiful Crystal looked in her formal attire. She sat beside me, so I could smell her soothing perfume. I felt like I was in a garden full of spring flowers.

"Crystal, go with Boaz to the hall. We'll catch up," the king said after we finished eating.

"Okay." Seeing Crystal stand up, I followed her.

We walked side by side out of the dining room and into the hall. Her guards and servants followed us. The closer we got to the room, the louder the music sounded. People must have come from all over the city center.

"Please leave us," I said to the people accompanying us.

"Stay," Crystal ordered.

I turned to them. The servants and royal warriors bowed their heads and left us. Crystal clenched her hands into fists. I approached, but she moved away. Seeing that, I kept my distance.

"Sorry, I was out of control," I murmured.

Crystal furrowed her brow. She lifted her head and looked at me. "You're sorry?"

"Yes. Did you think I'd never admit a mistake?" I asked, taking a step closer.

She sighed. "Drake and I don't have any relationship anymore. Don't worry. I won't cancel the wedding or run away from my responsibilities."

"I'm your mate. Our marriage is not just a responsibility," I argued.

"Alpha Boaz," she said.

"Boaz," I corrected, standing directly before her.

"You are the future husband of my deceased sister. I'm just replacing her role. This marriage must go ahead because it's a condition for your pack to help with the war," she pointed out.

"You're talking like I'm the villain in this marriage."

"'Let's make things clearer." She looked at me solemnly. "I don't want you. I was at a disadvantage when she passed away. So, we need to make a deal," she offered.

I smirked. "What deal?"

She swallowed heavily. "I want my own room, my loyal servants must come with me, and we will not have intercourse until you can see me as me, not Celyn. How's that?"

"Okay, okay, and no," I replied.

She frowned at my answer. "I see you were very close. She died two weeks ago. I can't believe you don't think of her when you see my face."

I leaned closer and was amused when her breath hitched. "Men and women have different thoughts about sex, Princess," I whispered. "I'll only think of you when we do it."
