Chapter 3 Homeless

Everyday went by quickly and Edna kept on seeing changes in herself. She found them delightful and wanted to keep experiencing them. Things were tough because she has decided not to go back to her job until she feels better. She is even defying her mum which is something she had never done before but with the changes which seem delightful she wanted to stay until she has mentally improved.

Lily, on the other hand found Edna like a hard nut to crack. No matter how she tries to break it open,she closes it up again even tightened way more than before. Edna had refuse to have hang out with her since that day. 'Maybe my smile really chased her away." She thought.

" Quit notice. " the word was boldly written in red on the white sheet glued to the door. Clothes could be seen littering the floor and clothes boxes swung open. At the corner of the door was Edna curled up crying, she just had a fight with the landlord that said she couldn't let a jobless person stay in her house, who could have informed her landlord that she was jobless? As far as Edna could remember, she doesn't have enough people in her life, so who could?

Things were finally looking up and life seems to hit her on the face again. She has literally called everyone she had to tell her predicament but they all had one answer "get your sh** together" without providing a solution.

"Aren't you getting up" she heard a voice.The voice sounded so familiar. She looked up and saw lily. Her face widened with a smile good enough to deceive lily that she was okay so that she could leave. " ohh, now you can smile " Lily said as she picked up the clothes and arranged them neatly into the boxes, raise Edna up, held her hand and held one of the boxes with the other without uttering a thing.

Walking on the road, Edna started thinking to herself "what does this lady wants from her?". She remembered she called her telling her address without anything else. She looked at her saying " you must have figured out after all."

She wanted to cry but she doesn't trust lily enough to break down at her presence.

At the end of the road they were walking on to a bungalow with a country flag which was sitting on a pole in the front yard. The country flag reminded her of her grandpa's place.The other houses around looked similar, then Edna remembered that she briefly saw "trav's estate" written on the gate when coming in.

"It's for my parents. They gave it to me as an inheritance." Lily explained to Edna who seemed like she needed that explanation.

The door was pushed gently. "Get in" lily said calmly. Everything looked blur probably from crying too much. Edna sank into the couch in the sitting room and slept off till the evening.

The soft aroma of a properly cooked macaroni and cheese welcomed Edna to reality. ' ohh you're awake. Come and eat ' She called to Edna who was trying to rub the sleep off.

After eating, the duo sat in chairs opposite each other staring awkwardly waiting for one of them to say something.

"I need to leave" Edna broke the silence.

"Why?"

"I can't stay here. I'll figure this out somewhere."

"Like?"

"Anywhere apart from here."

"Stop being dramatic ." "At least I'm not pretending " Edna said with a sigh.

With the last word said, she took her box and went out the door.Edna couldn't trust anyone. She has found it hard to trust anyone ever since her parents divorce. She left lily's place because she was afraid that she was beginning to trust her.

"Who is there?" a voice was heard. As the voice from the inside tries to see from the peephole. She felt annoyed as she got view of who was there.

"Edna?" Lucy said with distasteful voice as she tries to open the door.Edna went to place her boxes on the bed in her room. Coming out, she found out the dinner table has been set. She jumped with excitement because it was her favourite.

"Ohh,mum. You made dinner." She decided to eat even though she was full from lily's.

"You are not welcome here" Edna heard as she was cutting her steak.

"Mum?"

" yes , you can't." Lucy replied. "Why?"

"Because you can't be a failure like your dad!" She yelled. "Baby" she said in a calm voice "Be who I'm wielding you to be. It's the only way to be better and you even came in a taxi. That's disgraceful. What do you think frida will do?" Tears streams from Edna's eyes as she heard that.

" For who? I've always done what you wanted because I wanted to be enough for you, my happiness and everything I blocked! I built my goals based on yours because i didn't want to defy or disappoint you so that you could always know that I'm enough. But now i have something that I'm actually facing,something that I feel might kill me and the thing you can think of is how your child is disgracing you, what frida will do? and how grandpa will still pass the inheritance to me? What of the many time that I've made you happy even though you still pushed me to do more. What of me? Why can't you think about me ? Do you know why I'm sad? It's because now I can see what I've always refused to see that you are the selfish mother that only cares about herself."

She went inside took papers that looked like certificates throwing them at lucy one after the other as she exclaimed with tears."Here is for becoming a doctor like you wanted. This is for winning the pagent and here is for going to business school like aunt Frida's married daughter!!

"Leave!!!" Lucy said, with a pound that shook the table. "I ratted out on you to your landlord so you could be more sensible but it seems like you've finally lost it,you've finally gone 'daddy' over your life and I'll let you go like your dad. " Edna shook with that information. The only place she could call a home was no longer her home and "I refuse to be your mother anymore " Lucy said while slamming the door to her face as she pushed her with her box out.

Edna laughed maniacally while walking on the way with no place in mind to go to. She found herself knocking on lily's door. The door swung open and lily quickly pulled her into a hug.

The teardrops were uncontrollable from both sides. They spent the rest of the night packing Edna's boxes from the old apartment without saying anything to each other, with Edna tearing up. Suddenly, Edna hugged Lily.Tears flowed uncontrollably rolling down her cheek. Lily gently pull her to sit the whole night was just so tense as she narrated her life encounter to Lily who also cried because she saw the side of Edna that was struggling. Edna was narrating then she took a paused and they starred at themselves like they had an understanding without anything said. Edna could see that they were each others comfort.In the silence,Edna realized she found a home.
