Chapter 9
I didn't get home until after seven in the evening. As soon as I walked in, I saw a room full of people playing cards in the living room. The noise and the second-hand smoke filled the room, creating a chaotic atmosphere.
My father shouted loudly, "Mary, where have you been? It's so late, we're all very hungry here. Hurry up and make us some food."
"Alright, alright," I replied with a smile. I went to the kitchen and opened the fridge. Naturally, there wasn't much stocked up; the ingredients were just leftovers from previous shopping trips.
I decided to make a big pot of spaghetti.
By the time I finished cooking, it was already past eight.
"What is this? Why is it so plain?" Davina's mother, Marie, walked into the kitchen, her tone full of disdain.
"It's spaghetti. I used five eggs, one for each person. It's not plain at all," I explained.
"How can it be okay without any meat?" Marie was still dissatisfied.
I tried to reason with her, "Mrs., it's already eight o'clock. Eating too much now isn't good for digestion and will affect sleep quality."
"My daughter needs to eat well. She's expected to give your family a healthy grandson. How can she do that eating this? Frank, Sheri, you really make me feel cold-hearted," she said, turning to complain to my parents.
