Kevan must have filled Lillian in on everything the moment I left.
I texted Lillian the address of the café, and it wasn't long before she arrived.
Lillian sat down beside me, her face full of concern as she asked, "Why do you look so upset? Did something happen?"
I let out a long sigh, deliberately setting up the story I had already prepared.
"It's all because of Kevan and Kaitlin. I've poured my heart and soul into them, but they've only ever let me down. Kevan doesn't know the first thing about tenderness, and even Kaitlin doesn't show me any care or concern."
At the end, I subtly pinched my thigh, forcing my eyes to redden.
Lillian hid the smugness in her eyes as she feigned comfort.
"Kaitlin is still just a child. She'll understand when she's older. Besides, you're family. There's no grudge that lasts overnight."
I sighed dramatically. "You're single, living alone. How could you possibly understand the conflicts within a family? If I'd had the guts back then, like when you decided to abort, maybe I wouldn't be stuck in this mess."
Lillian's face instantly turned livid.
I couldn't help but smile coldly to myself.
Back then, Lillian was a housewife, pregnant, while her husband cheated on her with an intern from his company. I had been the one to stand by her side with Kevan, forcing her husband to leave with nothing.
Not long after the divorce, Lillian had aborted the baby and lived alone.
At the time, she cried every day, gnashing her teeth, claiming she hated mistresses more than anything.
And yet, she turned around and became the other woman in my marriage with Kevan, even swapping her illegitimate child for my own.
"I'm sorry, Lillian, I didn't mean it," I said, pretending to realize I had overstepped, grabbing her hand in a show of apology.
Lillian forced a smile, saying, "It's fine."
But her expression betrayed the spiteful resentment of having her shameful past laid bare.
At that moment, a surge of satisfaction from my little revenge filled me to the brim.
Judging by the current situation, Lillian wouldn't confront me just yet, and Kevan still needed to keep up the pretense of coaxing me.
But these weren't the things I was after.
I kept chatting with Lillian for a long time, giving her the impression that I had been "talked into" a more reasonable state of mind.
Before we parted, I gave her a Bulvari bracelet and personally clasped it around her right wrist.
I then continued sipping my coffee leisurely, realizing that having a clear perspective really felt good.
For the next two days, that father and daughter duo didn't dare provoke me, probably fearing I might truly explode.
But it seemed they wanted to teach me a lesson and chose to ignore me instead.
One evening, I had some work to handle at the company, so I told them I wouldn't be home. However, I soon realized I had left an important document behind and had to return.
I never expected that just as I reached the door, I would hear Lillian's angry voice from inside.
"If she doesn't sign the insurance papers, am I supposed to be kept as your mistress forever? This is our daughter, and having to hear her call someone else 'Mom'-do you have any idea how much that hurts?"
Kevan's voice suddenly cut in with a chilling laugh. "When she was signing the insurance papers before, she was just two strokes away from completing her name. Do you think she can escape her fate with death?"
Instantly, I felt a chill run down my spine!
