Chapter 3 No.3

three

On the way back home, neither of us said a word.

As soon as we arrived and opened the door, "my daughter" Kaitlin Simpson came rushing over.

She bypassed me entirely and flung herself at Kevan behind me, wrapping her arms around Kevan's neck and whining, "Daddy, why were you gone for so long? I missed you so much at home."

Kevan replied irritably, "It's because your Mommy changed her mind at the last minute. She wasted so much time dithering at the signing."

Kaitlin immediately huffed, "I knew it! This useless bitch can never be relied on. She always goes back on her word. I don't like her."

She shot me a sidelong glance, clearly expecting to see a look of sadness or disappointment on my face.

I responded with a cold smile. Calling her an ungrateful bastard would be a compliment.

Previously, when Kaitlin had a high fever, I took care of her tirelessly day and night, wearing myself out physically and emotionally. Meanwhile, Kevan she adored so much slept like a log and didn't even bother to cook her a single meal.

She casually mentioned once that she liked a limited-edition doll from Caewood. I immediately tapped into all my resources and connections and managed to get her a set. Kaitlin grinned ear to ear while hugging the doll, but when it came to expressing gratitude, she thanked Kevan.

These memories flashed before my eyes, and I took a deep breath.

It used to hurt, but ever since I found out she wasn't my biological daughter, I no longer felt any emotional turmoil.

Seeing that I wasn't responding, Kaitlin demanded, "I want pizza and Coke chicken wings."

"If you want to eat, ask your dad to make it," I said calmly, looking her in the eye. "Since you don't like me, I won't be taking care of anything for you anymore. I've already canceled all the afterschool classes I signed you up for. And as for the piano I promised to buy you, well, let your dad take care of that."

Kaitlin's face instantly filled with disbelief.

She knew how much I had spoiled her. Whatever she wanted, even if it was the stars in the sky, I'd try to get them for her.

I'd never said I wouldn't take care of her before.

And she wasn't a fool.

She was not stupid.

She knew who in this family made the big money and who controlled the finances. If I decided not to support her, her quality of life would certainly take a hit.

Kaitlin quickly looked over at Kevan.

Still angry about me not signing the form, Kevan muttered with a dark expression, "Who knows what's gotten into her this time? Just ignore her."

I concealed the mockery in my eyes. "Fine, from now on, you handle everything related to Kaitlin. It has nothing to do with me."

Kevan immediately raised his voice. "Why should I? She's not just my daughter!"

I spread my hands and feigned helplessness. "No matter what I do for her, she doesn't like me. So why should I bother with something that's all pain and no gain?"

That shut Kevan right up-after all, Kaitlin had just said those words herself.

Kaitlin stood there, stammering, unable to say anything.

Ignoring the dark looks on their faces, I grabbed the car keys from the table and walked out.

Just being under the same roof and breathing the same air as them made me feel disgusted.

I had barely settled into a nearby café when my phone buzzed in my pocket. The caller was none other than Lillian.
