Chapter 2 No.2

Two

The staff looked a little surprised.

Kevan's eyes widened in anger. "What do you mean by this? Didn't we agree on this when we came here? Are you messing with me?"

I finally turned to look at him, using all my strength to suppress the hatred that burned in my eyes.

"I changed my mind. I don't want to sign it anymore. Is that a problem? Why are you so insistent on making me sign this? Are you just waiting for me to die so you can pocket that huge insurance payout and enjoy yourself?"

Kevan's eyes flickered nervously. He thought I might have caught on to something. He quickly forced a sheepish smile.

"I'm just trying to secure a future for our daughter, that's all. Don't be ridiculous-anyone could have an accident."

I let out a cold laugh. "Oh, really? I've been reading a lot of news lately. Stories about husbands who cheat, find mistresses, trick their wives into signing something like this, and then, not long after, the wives suddenly die. Kevan, is that the route you're planning to take?"

The staff glanced at Kevan with a hint of suspicion.

Kevan was clearly startled; I could see the corners of his eyes twitching uncontrollably. When he noticed me watching him, he quickly masked his panic with anger. "What nonsense are you talking about?!"

I wasn't planning to expose him just yet, not without more evidence. "I know you wouldn't dare."

Kevan paused, and I continued, ignoring him. "But what if one day I die, and you end up rich and find yourself a new wife? How would I rest in peace watching that from above?"

I acted like a woman playfully complaining, and Kevan let out a sigh of relief.

He quickly laughed heartily and put his arm around my shoulders. "Alright, alright, flirting with me in public like this, huh? Let's just sign the form. When we get back, I'll cook you a big meal."

"I already told you, I'm not signing."

I stood up to leave. Kevan, both anxious and angry, restrained himself as he tried to hold me back. "Fine, fine, you're just worried I might find someone else, right? Then let's change the beneficiary to our daughter. Would that be acceptable?"

I couldn't help but sneer internally. That "daughter" wasn't even mine. Whoever I named would still benefit their little family of three. Did he think I'd be that stupid again?

I looked at him with a mocking smile. "Why don't you get a life insurance policy with me and our daughter as the beneficiaries instead?"

Kevan's expression darkened. "But this policy was purchased with your ID. How am I supposed to sign it?"

I shrugged and smiled nonchalantly. "Easy. Get another policy with your ID. We're not short on money to buy insurance."

"Madisyn, stop fooling around. That would be a waste, wouldn't it?"

Kevan's face seemed to turn red with frustration. I scoffed and said deliberately, "Whoever wants to sign it can sign it. I'm not signing!"

With that, I didn't give him another glance and turned to walk away.

Even with my back turned, I could feel his gaze piercing my back like sharp knives.

I sneered. Kevan, was just having your hopes dashed already too much for you to bear?

Then what were you going to do when things really started falling apart?
