"You look stunning" he said and she grinned at him and he held his hands out and she took it he led her to the table. While his mother watched with eyes as sharp as a hawk.
"It's finally nice to meet you Emily. Henry has said so much about you" she said, her voice was way too nice and Henry knew that this was a trap. Emily smiled innocently and curtsied.
"And it's nice to meet you too, your highness," Emily replied and his mother's smile widened. She nodded and grinned at Henry.
"She has good manners" she commented and motioned for Emily to sit, which she did. They dug into the meal while Henry kept his eyes fixed on his mother. Wishing she would just stop her cunning banter.
"Have you two slept together yet" she asked and Emily reddened, it took all Henry willpower not to say something snide to her instead he smirked and nodded.
"Yes mother. I believe I am of age to do that" he said and he could have sworn he saw Emily smile. His mother's green eyes glared sharply at his and he smiled.
"Sure sure" she quickly said and smiled at Emily again.
"What did you say you do again?" she asked and Emily smiled.
"Fashion designing, Ma'am" Emily said and the older woman smiled and poured lemonade for Emily. She offered cookies to Emily, who nodded her thanks and ate.
"You were the one who did that beautiful dress, I am impressed" she said and turned to Henry.
"Henry dear you haven't touched your lemonade" she said and Henry stared down in surprise he was too busy watching his mother closely to see if this was just an act. And she deserves an Oscar for all the acting.
"Ill drink it now" he raised the glass to his lips and drank slowly while his mother smiled.
They finished the rest of the meal in silence while Henry's mother watched Emily carefully. After some fake compliments and words Henry saw Emily to the door and was about to follow her when a servant whispered something in his ear.
"I'll send one of my servants to escort you, okay?" He said and she nodded. He gave her a quick kiss and a hug and retreated back inside. He walked briskly to his mother's study. She sat on a high backed leather chair.
"Sit down" she said gesturing to a chair but Henry remained standing.
"What do you want, mother?" he growled and his mother scowled.
"Why did you bring a low class home huh? Who even knows her" his mother said and Henry tightened his fists, trying to rein in his anger.
"Is that what you think?" He asked and his mother shook her head and stared at the fire.
"You are a prince Henry, a royalty. What do you think the world is gonna say when they catch you with a low life like Emily." She said and Henry scowled.
"Don't you ever call her that" he said, his voice could have broken glass and for a moment his mother looked utterly afraid then she slapped him hard.
"Are you gonna go against your own mother, eh? Because of some stupid commoner" she said and poked him in the shoulder.
"Well let me break it down for you, honey. You are not going to be with that girl again or else I'll send the guards after her and she'll be sent to prison" she threatened and Henry smiled, a dangerous smile that caught his mother off guard.
"I like to see you try mother, and as you said. I am royalty, I can get away with what I want." He said with a smug smile much to his mother's annoyance.
Henry pivoted and snatched a bottle from a shelf and poured brandy into a well cut glass and drank it all in one drop. His mother was seething in anger thinking of threats to get him to change his mind on Emily.
"I can send guys to hurt her you know" his mother said and Henry froze. When he turned his blue eyes were so stony that his mother stepped back.
"You don't want to do that, dear mother." He said, his voice was deadly as a sharp sword. "I love her and there is nothing you, Gilbert, Jane and Amelia can do about it" he said and his mother scowled.
"Love? Does that even exist?" His mother asked with sarcasm and he smiled.
"For you? No. You are just a gold digger mom. You married dad for his wealth Huh?" He taunted and his mother strode towards him and slapped him again.
"How dare you" she said and he smiled as if the slap didn't affect him at all. He nodded and sipped the last of the brandy and stared at her in the eye.
"Tell me mother, who knew you before you married dad?" She said and she scowled.
"I was the daughter of a well known billionaire" she said and Henry pursed his lips and nodded thoughtfully.
"Are you done?" Henry asked and she closed her eyes and opened them.
"Look honey, I am so sorry for hitting you. It's just that I want the best for you" she said and Henry shook his head.
"You don't know what is the best for me, mother," he said and pivoted.
"I'll see you soon mother" he said and walked away.
"What do you mean by that" his mother yelled but Henry paid her no heed, he had made up his mind. It's best he be with Emily.
