But just as quickly, the moment is gone, and Liam's expression hardens. He turns away from me, his eyes settling on Selena, the pack's fiercest warrior.
"Selena," he says, his voice ringing out clear and strong. "I choose you as my mate, as the future Luna of the Silver Moon pack."
The crowd erupts into cheers and howls, but I barely hear them over the roaring in my ears. I feel like I've been punched in the gut like all the air has been sucked from my lungs.
Selena steps forward, her head held high and a triumphant smile on her face. She takes Liam's hand, and together, they turn to face the pack.
"I accept your choice, Liam," she says, her voice dripping with satisfaction. "And I vow to stand by your side, to be your partner and your equal in all things."
The crowd cheers again, but I can't bring myself to join in. I feel like I'm going to be sick, like the ground is spinning beneath my feet.
And then, as if to add insult to injury, Selena turns to face me, her eyes glinting with malice.
"Well, well, well," she sneers. "Looks like the little omega didn't get her happy ending after all. What a shame."
The crowd titters with laughter, and I feel my cheeks burning with humiliation. I want to run, to hide, to disappear into the ground, and never come back.
But before I can move, Selena takes a step towards me, her claws extended.
"I think it's time we settled this once and for all, don't you?" she says, her voice low and threatening. "Let's see who the real alpha female is, shall we?"
My heart is pounding so hard I can barely breathe, but I refuse to back down. I may be weak, but I won't let Selena see my fear.
We circle each other, our eyes locked and our muscles tensed. And then, with a snarl, Selena lunges for me, her claws slashing through the air.
I dodge to the side, but I'm not fast enough. Selena's claws catch me on the shoulder, and I cry out in pain as blood begins to flow.
The crowd is chanting now, their voices rising in a frenzied chorus. "Selena! Selena! Selena!"
I grit my teeth, trying to block out the noise. I have to focus, have to find a way to beat her.
But Selena is too fast, too strong. She comes at me again and again, her claws and teeth tearing at my skin. I feel myself growing weaker with each blow, my vision blurring and my lungs burning.
And then, with a final, savage cry, Selena slams into me, knocking me to the ground. I lay there, gasping for breath, as she stood over me, her eyes blazing with triumph.
"Pathetic," she spits, her voice dripping with contempt. "You never stood a chance against me, omega."
The crowd is laughing now, their voices rising in a mocking chorus. I feel tears stinging my eyes, but I refuse to let them fall. I won't give them the satisfaction of seeing me cry.
And then, out of the corner of my eye, I see movement. Liam is coming towards me, his expression unreadable.
For a moment, I feel a flicker of hope. Maybe he's changed his mind, maybe he's realized his mistake in choosing Selena.
But as he draws closer, I see the anger in his eyes, the disgust twisting his features.
He reaches down and grabs my hand, yanking me to my feet. I stumble, my legs shaking beneath me, but Liam doesn't let go.
And then, as our eyes meet, I feel it. A spark, a connection, a rush of energy that flows between us like an electric current.
I gasp, my eyes widening in shock. I know what this is, what it means. The mate bond, the sacred connection that the moon goddess herself has forged between us.
But Liam's reaction is very different. His eyes narrow, his lips curling into a snarl of rage.
"No," he growls, his voice low and deadly. "No, this can't be happening. I won't accept it."
The crowd has fallen silent now, watching the drama unfold with bated breath.
Liam turns to face them, his voice ringing out clear and strong.
"I, Liam, the future alpha of the Silver Moon pack, reject you, Aria, as my mate and future Luna of the Silver Moon pack."
The words hit me like a physical blow, knocking the air from my lungs. I feel like I'm going to be sick, like the world is crumbling around me.
But even through the haze of pain and humiliation, I know what I have to do. I have to accept his rejection, have to let him go.
"I, Aria, the omega of the Silver Moon pack, accept your rejection," I say, my voice trembling but clear.
The crowd erupts into laughter and jeers, their voices rising in a mocking chorus.
"Pathetic!"
"Weak!"
"She never stood a chance!"
I feel the tears streaming down my face, but I don't bother to wipe them away. What's the point? Everyone has already seen my weakness, my humiliation.
Liam turns and walks away, Selena by his side. I watch them go, my heart shattering into a million pieces.
How could this have happened? How could the moon goddess have chosen me as Liam's mate, only to have him reject me in front of the entire pack?
I feel like I can't breathe, like the world is spinning out of control. I stumble away from the crowd, my vision blurred by tears.
I don't know where I'm going, don't care. All I know is that I have to get away, have to find somewhere to hide, to lick my wounds, and try to figure out what to do next.
But as I stumble through the forest, my mind reeling and my heart aching, I can't shake the feeling that this is only the beginning. That my journey is far from over, and that the path ahead is filled with danger and uncertainty.
And somewhere, deep inside me, I feel a flicker of something else. Something that feels suspiciously like hope, like the promise of a future that I never dared to dream of.
But for now, all I can do is keep moving forward, one step at a time. And hope that somehow, someday, I'll find a way to prove to everyone, including myself, that I'm more than just a weak and pathetic omega.
