"But you just can't," he added to what the father was supposed to say. Her voice sounds sulky. its muzzle started to grow longer and then it gradually frowned. Sir Jax lifted Lily's head and made her face him. He planted a swift kiss on her forehead after.
"And that doesn't mean that I don't love you," he whispered softly. "Daddy will recover, promise."
Sir Jax planted a light kiss on his son again before he gently kissed him. I was just standing behind him as he did that. The child was fast asleep at that time.
"Uh, sir. I'll fix it," I said, pointing out the books on the bed. I started taking the books that were there then stacked them on the shelves on the other side.
"Seiya, right?"
I slowly turned to Sir Jax's direction. It remained standing on the edge of the bed while watching me as I was now being repaired.
"Y-yes, yes."
i saw him nodded his head. "Can we talk for a while?" he said that I barely stopped. My lips protruded and my heart began to pound wildly inside my chest. He's not going to kiss me, is he?
"S-alright," I stuttered as the nervousness reached my chest.
calm down, Sefia Bianca.
He breathed out in a deliberate manner before he glanced at his daughter again. "After that, go to the library," he finally said before heading out of the room.
After I fixed Lily's room, I went straight to the library as Sir Jax ordered. even though my legs almost shook because of the nervousness, I was satisfied that it didn't show on my face. I stopped in front of the door and knocked first.
"S-sir Jax?"
"Come in," his voice infiltrated through the door. I patted the uniform I was wearing before deciding to go inside. I saw him sitting on the swivel in front of the wooden table. His eyes slowly lifted to see me. I swallowed as I played the hem of my clothes.
"Please, sit down."
"U-uh, it's okay," I nervously obeyed his order. I cleared my throat and then sat on the couch that was placed in front of him. There was a moment of silence between the two of us. I don't know why my chest started pounding as I waited for what he had to say next.
"I've read on your profile that you dropped out of college?" his brow lifted.
"Uh yes, sir. I have another brother who is also studying. I gave way for him," I answered. I felt downhearted at that time and that's the truth, but I had no regrets in giving way for Celestine. she's more important than my dreams, they are way more important than any other things for me.
His neutral expression remains as he stared at me. I don't know if he believes me or not. I can't read his expression because he's not giving me the chance to do so. it was as if he's trying to be stoic all the time so that I wouldn't know what was really going on his mind. I gulped and decided to look down instead.
I heard him heave a sigh. "Anyway, how's my daughter?"
"P-what?" we looked at each other after he leaned back from sitting.
"I mean, how was your first day? Did she do something unpleasant to you, so far?"
I bit my lower lip and wondered if I should tell what happened this morning? Should I tell him? What if he still sided with the child even if I reported? I should have seen this coming. of course, he'll ask about his daughter, Seia!
"Uh, nothing sir," my small voice replied. "The boy is nice."
"I know you're aware that nobody can babysit Lily," I know that he sounds so manly when he speaks foreign, but I didn't know that he can also be this good when he speaks Tagalog. I couldn't help but feel even more nervous. "I just want to make everything clear here, Ms. Esquivel."
my whole body stiffened. What is he talking about?
"W-what do you mean, sir?"
I saw how he arched his brow and tilted his head on the other side. I couldn't see if there was a smile playing on the corner of his lips or something. like I said earlier, I can't read him.
"I just want to say that you still have a chance to back out now if you want, as early as possible," he said without taking his eyes off me. My body literally froze like an ice. I don't know if I should laugh at that or just shrug it off. I'd like to think that he's just joking, but there's no sign of humor on his face so what would I suppose to do? "If you've had a change of heart and realized that you can't handle my daughter anymore, then you can stop from here. don't worry, I'll still pay you."
"No," I answered without hesitation. I didn't come this far just to back out. Over my decaying body! I didn't waste time, effort and money just to quit this job so I won't back down. I stared back at him determinedly. "I'll stay, sir. even if I have a hard time, I will not back out. You probably haven't asked me yet, but I'm the type of person who doesn't give up easily. So you don't have to worry because I will do everything to put up with your child."
I looked directly at him and even though my legs almost shook because he still didn't take his eyes off me, I still raised my forehead. I could clearly see how his jaw cried while biting his lower lip as if something was being prevented from escaping. In the end, he looked away and coughed loudly to the side.
He composed himself. "Okay, I understand."
CHAPTER 2.1 | Breakfast
"Don't worry sir, I have never had a bad record even in my past jobs. I have always been a good shot with my boss. I was the best in communication when I was in elementary school and I was never listed in noisy," what other self-selling did I do just to make him see that I am serious about this job. "I can do this job, sir. I promise to do my job wholeheartedly. I was born to do this job, so you don't have to worry."
His mouth hung open as if he found whatever I said amusing. I heard him mock. "Okay. I believe in you," he smirked before he shifted from his chair. "Anyway, Lily needs to go to school tomorrow. her schedule is Monday to Friday every morning. I usually leave early, so we often don't see each other in the morning."
After a while, Sir Jax stood up causing me to stand up and follow his walk.
"U-uh, noted," I answered.
"Sebastian will drive you to school. you have to stay there and watch my daughter until her class is over, then go straight home," he firmly instructed. "If she wants to go somewhere you have to call me first."
"Noted, sir."
"Don't ever let her out of your sight. lily is quite adventurous so I want her to be secured all the time."
"I understand, sir." I nodded and then slowly looked up when I felt it stop in front of me.
"Lastly," he uttered while staring at me. my eyes dilated a bit when I realized how slender I was in front of him. Sir Jax is a huge man. I probably look like a tiny kitten compared to his colossal body. "Don't mention anything about her mom."
At the last word, he seemed to hesitate whether to say it or not. My throat was a little dry but eventually I nodded. I want to ask more but I know I shouldn't. I think, that's my boundary. My only job is to look after his daughter. It's a personal matter between him and his ex-wife, and I shouldn't meddle with it.
"I understand."
He stared at me for a while, considering. In the end he just nodded and didn't speak anymore.
I woke up at six o'clock the next day. Lily was still asleep in her room when I went to see her there earlier so I just cleaned myself up before finally going down to the dining room to prepare breakfast. Lily has school at eight so I still have plenty of time to prepare what she will need.
I headed to the kitchen and started looking for stocks in the fridge. Some lights were on when I came down and I could see the guards outside the house.
"Is Lily awake yet?" I looked behind me when I heard Kuya Baste's voice. I am currently cooking breakfast.
"Sleep, Brother. I'll wake you up later," I replied with a smile. "Has Sir Jax left yet?"
The man scratched his senses while taking a look at what I was doing there.
"Not yet, but that's leaving."
Sir Jax just came down from the stairs while adjusting his tie. We looked at the young man together.
"Sir Jax," said Kuya Baste.
"Good morning, sir," I greeted.
"Mornin'," he answered back with his usual reserved voice. he immediately scanned the kitchen then darted his gaze at me.
"Wake her up at seven. Don't let her skip her meals," he instructed after putting the watch on his wrist. He probably came from the son's room.
"Yes sir," I answered here.
"Call me if she needs something," Sir Jax finally instructed me. "I'll go ahead first."
"Uh, sir," I stopped as he turned to leave. I felt that Kuya Baste also looked at me as if he was also waiting for what I would say. "Uh, don't you two have breakfast before you leave?"
His brow raised and slowly glanced at the man behind me as if I had said something wrong. Then Kuya Baste and I looked at each other. Sir Jax exhaled before he glanced at me again. I sighed, not knowing why he seemed nervous every time he looked at me like that.
"I don't usually eat breakfast," he just said before turning his back on us.
My lips parted slightly when he left us there. Kuya Baste's forced coughing was the only thing that made me regain my senses. I looked at him and saw that he motioned his hand to his neck and then shook his head.
At first, I didn't get it but eventually realized that I shouldn't have asked my boss that. lily is my priority here and not him. Did I know that he didn't have breakfast?!
After I prepared breakfast, I went up to the second floor again to go to Lily's room. Sir Jax had left earlier so he couldn't catch up with her. I took a deep sigh when I reached her front door. I know that she's already planning something inside, so I want to be careful this time. Maybe later I will reach even worse today compared to yesterday. I slowly turned the lock and gently opened it.
"Lily?"
I fumbled for the light switch on the side before going inside. She was lying on her bed, stiff and not moving. That's a relief! She's still asleep. I sighed and smiled. I was about to approach the case when I tripped over a cloth that looked like it was left there because I fell on the floor again.
"Hahahaha!" Lily's deafening laugh echoed inside her room. Fortunately, I was able to hold my hands up so my face didn't hit the floor. "Hahahah! You're so lame!"
I clenched my jaw and slowly stood up. I patted myself and then bowed in front of it.
"Are you happy?" I asked sarcastically as he stopped laughing. "Get up there and have breakfast downstairs. You have to go to school early."
"I don't want to go to school!" she yelled out which made me close my eyes in displeasure. This toothless naughty kid is starting to get on my nerves.
"Lily-"
"I said I don't want to go to school!"
"I'll inform your daddy then," I uttered, gathering every fiber of my patience.
"I feel sick!" it made my eyes widen with envy. I quickly walked closer to him to check if he was hot or not.
"You're not hot!" I exclaimed while frowning.
His face crumpled even more because of what he heard. "I just don't want to go to school. I want to stay here."
"Ezili," I called threateningly. "You can't be absent from school. Your daddy will be mad if he knows that you don't want to study anymore. do you want him to get sad because of you?"
His previously frowning face gradually changed to thinking. Its muzzle lengthened again as if it wanted to argue, but nothing was done in the end. She jumped out of her bed and ran outside her room. I just got tired and started to fix his room.
