Chapter 8 Rejection

MIA'S POV

It was almost too easy. One day I was trapped in their dungeons and the other I was roaming around freely in the pack. For what? Just a chance that I gave him? A chance that was nothing but a lie. I scoffed. These werewolves are too gullible for their own good. How can they claim to be the strongest when they are nothing but actually the weakest, as soon as their mates walk in the picture. Then be it enemy or friend, they will most likely get their families and whole packs killed in the name of soulmates or their so-called love.

If I knew it was going to be this easy, then I would just have accepted to give him that chance the very first day. Well, as you can guess, since I'm able to walk freely in the pack house, I decided to take a walk in their gardens. What's better than exploring the place, understanding all the ins and outs for the next attack.

The first sight that hit me was children running around freely, having the best time of their lives chasing one another. My mind trailed back to the memories I had of my childhood. Quite the opposite. The only thing I remember was training, having a strict diet to follow, always saying yes to what father said, bearing all the hard blows I used to get in practice fights, all just to become the person I am today. Would I call myself strong? Not really. Because I was still different from all of them. Heck, I was the weakest amongst them. After all, I was a human amongst witches and wizards, well, and now werewolves. Sometimes I even wonder, why did dad even bother with me when I had no qualities like them?

I think that's what has made me in debt to him. The fact that he trained me to become a strong person, pushed my limits to reach my potential just so I wouldn't feel left out, speaks enough for the love he had for me. Although some of his rules were harsh. Maybe very harsh, but I knew it was all to bring out the best in me.

"Here you are," I broke out of my thoughts to see a girl not older than twenty-five years or so, with blonde hair and pale skin, standing next to me in ripped jeans and a crop top. I quirked an eyebrow at the way she acted so casually around me, as if we were friends.

"And you must be?" My voice came out ruder than I intended.

"Julia, Julia Darwin. Christian's younger and cooler sister," she smiled.

"Oh," I didn't know what else to say. Now that she mentioned it, I could see the slight similarity between the features.

"Do you mind if I join you?"

"You're allowed to do as you wish," I don't know why I was acting so bratty. There was no need for it. She was just being nice. But for some reason, the fact that I was away from home, having to act like I belong here when I clearly didn't, made a sudden swing in my mood. She sighed at my comment before continuing.

"I know it's not easy. It truly is a huge change for you. With all the hatred that has been brewing between us and the Shadow Weavers, I'm still thankful to you for giving Christian a chance. All his life he has only been devoted to King Dominic and sacrificed everything for the pack. But I knew one thing he had always craved for the past 300 years, was his mate," that made me whip my head to her.

"What? 300?" I looked at her as if she had grown two heads.

"Oh, I'm so sorry. We werewolves almost stop aging after our late twenties. And we live a long life, like very long. But to put it humanly, he is only 29 if that helps." I didn't say anything to that. "After our parents' death, he is the only family I have left. He did not take care of me like an older brother, but rather a father. Ignoring himself to make sure I got everything I wanted. And in this process he completely lost himself, became a robot just responsible for fulfilling duties." Just for a moment my heart pained at the thought, only for a second before I pushed the feeling away. It was the little empathy I had left in me. Maybe because my life wasn't any different from his?

"But you have to believe me, after you came, I see the spark that his eyes once lost, has returned. It's like you gave him a reason to continue his duties. Something to live for. So thank you for giving us a chance to mend things for once between Werewolves and the Shadow Weavers. Thank you for giving him a chance to live the life he actually deserves and not reject him." Reject him? Did I hear right?

"Reject him?" My curiosity got the best of me and I couldn't help but ask.

"Oh, I almost forgot you're a human. Mates can reject their other halves if they don't want to be with them. Though that's hardly the case, since they can't fight against the bond and immediately feel attracted towards their better halves as soon as they find them. Maybe 0.8% have so far rejected their mates, so it's hardly the case." Interesting. Very interesting.

"So how is it done? The whole rejection process? Do you guys like, sign papers or something?" I couldn't help but ask for details.

"Oh no," she laughed, "it's not that formal. You just have to take your name and your mate's name saying you reject him out loud. Of course, with their title, if they have one." Either she is very stupid or she has trusted me way too much. "But no mate is able to take rejection. It either kills them, or the pain makes their lives unlivable."

"But why do you ask?" You just remember that now, girl?

"Oh, no reason. Just..general knowledge, you know."

*******

I returned to the room feeling kind of delighted at the knowledge Julia had parted with me. I was smiling ear to ear when Christian entered the room. "You look rather happy?" He asked.

"I am," I simply replied.

"And why would that be?" He came forward to stand closer to me as I turned from the window to fully face him. I gave him an evil smirk before saying the next words out loud.

"Because I, Mia, of Shadow Weavers rejec-" I saw his eyes visibly go wide before I found myself pushed against the wall rather harshly with a hand covering my mouth as my eyes stared into the bright golden ones in shock. It happened way too fast for me to even process before I heard his venomous growl.

"I. FUCKING. DARE. YOU," he roared and caught the second voice that came laving with his own. That was enough for me to know, his wolf was threatening to come out. He kept me locked between him and the wall, one of his palms covering my mouth while the other plaster just above the swelling of my breast, keeping me still on the wall.

We kept looking into each other's eyes for what felt like an eternity, the tension in the room clearly high. For a moment, even I was scared of him. He looked feral. Sounded feral. The aggression, the fury that burned within his eyes was enough to send chills down my spine and I knew if I aggravated him more, he might as well just kill me on the spot. But then it clicked, he could not kill me. I was his mate after all.

Did I even do the right thing? I guess not. Maybe I acted on my impulse way sooner than intended. Fuck now he's not going to trust me. What the fuck have I done? Just reduced my chances of escaping. Think quick Mia, think quick! I did the only thing that came to my mind. I laughed. I laughed like it was the most hilarious thing on earth, pushing him away slightly to make him uncover my mouth. He looked at me confused at what had happened.

"I ..I was just kidding," I said in-between my fit. "You actually thought...you thought I would reject you? Ahahah," this was the best I could do with the fake laughing. "Gosh, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to do that, Christian." I laughed again, "I just wanted to see how possessive werewolves can be over their mates. You know, since you're the first one I met. Or actually got close to.." I trailed off, observing his expression. He looked pissed. Very pissed.

He had backed away from me a step or two, but I could still feel the anger radiating off him. "I'm sorry, I won't do that again. Ever. I swear I wasn't going to complete the sentence. I wasn't even going to take your name. I just..well I just wanted to see..." before I could continue, he cut me off.

"Well, unless the next time you want to be spanked so hard that you forget to breathe, I would suggest you not to try that stunt again. If you wanted to see my possessiveness, you could have literally tried many other things. But that, Mia, is not a joke." He seethed. "And if you ever think you can get away from me Mia, you are wrong! Nothing in this world can take you away from me. Not even you yourself, Mia. Mark my words. I most definitely will find you!" He stormed out of the room, leaving me stunned at his words. Shit, what the hell did I just do?
