Aria POV:
"Look, it's her. The Wolfless one."
The whispers of two passing Omega wolves reached my ears, but I barely reacted. I had heard those words countless times before. They knew I had no wolf, no power, and no place among the strongest bloodlines of the pack.
But they were wrong about one thing.
I was not just some Wolfless girl standing in the Blackwood Pack's ballroom. I was Aria Hayes, the future Luna of the Blackwood Pack.
My fingers rested around the champagne flute as I looked across the magnificent ballroom. The air was filled with expensive perfume, soft music, and the laughter of the pack members. Everyone knew my weakness, yet none of it had ever truly mattered.
Because the Moon Goddess had chosen me.
Jared Hayes, the future Alpha of the Blackwood Pack, was my fated mate.
We had grown up together. We had trained together, fought together, and dreamed of the day we would stand before the entire pack as Alpha and Luna. From childhood until now, everyone had believed we were destined for each other.
A bond chosen by the Moon Goddess was sacred. So I never doubted him.
I searched through the crowd, looking for him.
I only needed one glance from him. One familiar smile. One silent reassurance that everything was still the same.
Then I saw him.
Jared was walking toward me from the center of the dance floor, his handsome face illuminated beneath the golden chandeliers. For a moment, my heart softened, thinking he had finally come to stand beside me.
Until I saw the woman in his arms.
Carrie Whitmore.
Her blonde hair shone beneath the lights as she leaned against his chest. One hand rested possessively on his arm, while Jared's palm was placed protectively against the small of her back.
Their closeness was not accidental. It was familiar. Natural. Like she belonged there.
Carrie's lips curled into a victorious smile when she saw me.
My entire body froze.
The music continued. The laughter continued. But everything around me became distant.
Because Carrie was not just another woman. She was the true daughter of the Whitmore family.
And I...I was only the adopted daughter they had brought into the family.
My fingers tightened around the champagne flute until the crystal trembled. The man who was supposed to be my destiny was standing beside another woman.
They walked straight toward me.
Jared's golden eyes met mine. Those were the same eyes that had once looked at me with endless affection.
But now, there was nothing left.
"Aria," he said. His voice was calm, yet it instantly silenced the conversations around us. "We need to talk."
My heart pounded violently against my chest, but I forced myself to stand tall. I lifted my chin and looked at the man I had once believed was my destiny.
"Talk about what, Jared?"
He glanced at Carrie, who gave him a subtle, encouraging nod. I squeezed my eyes shut for a second, trying to block out the sight.
"Our engagement," Jared said, taking a deep breath as if steeling himself. "It's over. As of today."
Time stopped. I could hear the blood pounding in my ears, a frantic drumbeat against the sudden, absolute silence.
Carrie leaned against Jared's chest, her gaze a smug mix of pity and pleasure. "Aria, I hope you don't blame Jared," she cooed, her voice just loud enough for the vultures circling us to hear. "An Alpha needs a Luna who can stand with him. A Wolfless is a liability."
"A liability?" The word was a raw, trembling thing on my tongue.
Jared's brow furrowed. "Carrie's right," he said, his tone hardening. "I can't marry a Wolfless. It's unfair to the pack."
His words were a slap. The casual, matter-of-fact way he said it stung worse than any physical blow. He spoke as if he were discussing a failed business deal. A sharp ache settled deep in my heart-the agony of a mate bond, a gift from the Moon Goddess, being unilaterally severed.
I saw Jared flinch, his jaw tightening for a split second. He felt it too, that spiritual backlash. But he quickly masked it, his expression settling back into cold resolve.
"I, Jared Hayes, reject you, Aria Whitmore, as my mate."
The formal words, the ancient rite of rejection, hung in the air, each one a nail in the coffin of my old life. A metallic taste filled my mouth. The eyes of the guests were on me, sharp and hungry, feasting on my humiliation.
Just as I felt my knees about to buckle, my adoptive father, Cornelius Whitmore, head of North Star Holdings, stepped forward. He didn't even look at me. His eyes were fixed on Jared, a greasy, sycophantic smile plastered on his face.
"Alpha Jared, now that this is settled, about the partnership we discussed between North Star Holdings and the Blackwood Pack..."
I couldn't believe my ears. My father, in the middle of my public humiliation, was worried about his business.
Jared didn't even look surprised by my father's words. He simply leaned back slightly, his golden eyes still fixed on me. Then, as if granting permission for a minor request, he casually flicked his hand.
The gesture was subtle. Dismissive.
My father finally turned to me, his voice dropping into a low, malicious hiss. "Aria, don't make a scene. Apologize to Alpha Jared. Perhaps he'll still consider taking you as one of his Omegas."
That broke me. My fiancé, my family, pushing me into the abyss on the very same night.
I looked at their expectant faces, and a fire I never knew I possessed roared to life in my chest. Pure, unadulterated rage flared within me.
With a cry, I hurled my champagne flute to the floor. It exploded, the sound making everyone jump.
"I, Aria Whitmore, accept your rejection," I said, my voice clear and ringing as I met Jared's shocked gaze. Then I turned to my father. "And you, Cornelius, as of this moment, you and I are done."
I didn't wait for a response. I spun around, shoving my way through the stunned crowd, tears finally blurring my vision. I had to get out. I had to escape.
I ran, with no destination in mind, only the desperate need to flee. I burst out of the manor and into the cold night air, my feet carrying me toward the one place I was always forbidden to go: the dark, menacing woods bordering the estate. The Forbidden Forest.
They said it was full of Rogues and dangerous beasts. Right now, it felt like the only sanctuary in the world.
I gasped for breath in the freezing night. The trees were twisted, skeletal shapes against the moonless sky. The pain in my soul and the frantic pace of my escape drained my strength. My foot caught on a root, and I went down hard, my body crashing against the leafy ground.
Darkness swarmed the edges of my vision. My consciousness was fading.
Just before the blackness consumed me, I saw them. A pair of glowing, golden eyes, watching me from the shadows.
A tall, dark figure emerged from behind a tree. As my world went black, a pair of strong, powerful arms caught me before I hit the ground.
Cyrus POV:
The woman in my arms was as light as a feather, her scent a confusing mix of the Blackwood Pack fools and something else... something faint, almost undetectable, like the first snow of winter.
Moments ago, I'd been dealing with a few Rogues who had trespassed on my territory. The metallic tang of their blood still clung to the air, and with it came the familiar, agonizing chill of the silver poison flaring up in my veins. It was a cold fire, a snake of ice gnawing at my bones.
I had leaned against an ancient oak, bracing for the monthly torment, when she had stumbled into the clearing and collapsed right in front of me.
The moment I caught her, the second her body made contact with mine, the impossible happened. The searing pain from the silver, the agony that had been my constant companion, was... suppressed. Muted.
My Lycan, the beast within, let out a low, satisfied growl.
I looked down at her face, pale as porcelain under the faint moonlight filtering through the canopy. My golden eyes narrowed in suspicion and intrigue. Her life force was fading fast. The pain of a mate rejection could kill a fragile wolf, let alone a... Wolfless.
Her breathing grew shallow, her skin turning cold to the touch. The calculating Alpha within me recognized the timing as far too perfect. A Wolfless girl who could coincidentally quell my silver poison, appearing on my land at the exact moment of my weakness? The odds were impossible.
But as my gaze fell on her closed eyelids, the dark lashes trembling against her pale cheeks, the beast inside me roared.
Mine!
A primal, possessive instinct shook me to my core. This was the Moon Goddess's work. She was mine. She belonged to me regardless.
All hesitation vanished. I held her closer, lowered my head to the pale, vulnerable column of her throat, and let my fangs descend.
I needed to mark her. To claim her. To pull her back from the brink of death with my own power.
My fangs pierced her delicate skin. Her blood was a shock to my system, tasting of that same unique, icy snow.
I poured my pure Lycan energy into her through the wound. Her body arched against mine, a pained whimper escaping her lips.
She was a dry riverbed, a parched desert, greedily absorbing every drop of my power. And as my energy flowed into her, something stirred deep within her. A faint but impossibly pure energy pushed back, flowing into me, warming the blood that the silver had chilled.
This energy... it was ancient. Pure. It shimmered with the light of the moon itself. It was unlike any bloodline I had ever encountered. A crack formed in some kind of seal deep within her, and her scent, that intoxicating winter snow, bloomed, becoming a fraction stronger.
My heart hammered against my ribs with a wild, unbelievable suspicion. Could she be hiding a wolf?
The infusion of my power pulled her back from death's door, but it was too much for her fragile body. She went completely limp in my arms.
I withdrew my fangs, licking the wound clean. A dark, bruise-like mark, the symbol of my claim, now stained her neck.
I scooped her up into my arms. Her silver-white hair cascaded over my arm like a waterfall of moonlight.
I narrowed my eyes, analyzing the situation. My suspicion hadn't lessened. In fact, her being my potential mate made this feel even more like a meticulously crafted checkmate.
I reached out through the mind-link to my Beta, Liam.
Prepare the medical wing. I'm on my way back. No one is to know.
Liam's response was immediate, a wave of calm obedience in my mind. Yes, Alpha.
I held her tight and melted back into the darkness of the forest. My wolf urged me to shift, to run, but I couldn't bring myself to let go of the warmth in my arms.
Back at Sinclair Manor, the heart of my Blood Moon territory, I carried her straight to my private medical wing on the top floor. Liam was waiting, his usually stoic expression faltering for a fraction of a second when he saw the woman in my arms.
"Run every test. Find out what's wrong with her. And Liam," I said, my voice low and hard as I gently placed her on the sterile bed, "this conversation never happened."
"Her identity?" Liam asked quietly.
"A lost Omega," I answered coldly, the lie tasting like ash in my mouth.
I needed her under my watch, where I could monitor her every breath. A mate who could soothe my poison, a "Wolfless" girl with a secret sealed inside her...
Until I had all the answers, she was going nowhere.
I looked down at her sleeping face, my fingers tracing the air above the new mark on her neck. It was practically humming with my power.
This mark wasn't just salvation. It was a chain. For her, and for me.
My eyes darkened. Welcome to the Blood Moon Pack, my little prisoner.
Aria POV:
I woke to a sharp, stinging pain in my neck. A physical ache throbbed near my collarbone, replacing the spiritual agony of rejection.
I shot upright, my head spinning. I was in a small, spartan room. Gray walls, a single bed, a small wardrobe. This wasn't anywhere in the Blackwood Pack.
I scrambled to the room's only mirror and gasped. There, on the side of my neck, was a dark, angry-looking mark in the distinct shape of a wolf's bite.
I stumbled back from the mirror, clutching the edge of the dresser. While I was unconscious, someone had marked me. A strange Alpha had branded me as his. In the werewolf world, that meant I was his property.
I looked around the simple room. It was clearly meant for a servant, or a low-ranking Omega. I slumped onto the edge of the mattress. I had gone from a future Luna to a stranger's possession.
I took a deep, shuddering breath, forcing the panic down. Crying wouldn't help. I had survived the ultimate betrayal from my mate and my family; nothing could be worse than that.
I checked my body. Other than the mark and a profound exhaustion, I was untouched. The Alpha had marked me, saved me... why?
A sharp knock on the door made me jump back, my body instantly shifting into a defensive stance.
The door opened, and two men walked in. The one in front was a mountain, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit that did nothing to hide the raw power radiating from him. His presence was suffocating.
His eyes were pure gold, cold and sharp, dissecting me like a specimen. I recognized those eyes. They were the last thing I saw before I passed out in the forest.
Behind him, another man in a suit stood with a respectful deference. Clearly an assistant.
"You're awake," the tall man said. His voice was a low, rumbling baritone, devoid of any emotion. "I am Cyrus Sinclair. The Alpha of the Blood Moon Pack."
Cyrus Sinclair. The name struck me like lightning. The most powerful Alpha in the region, a legendary figure known for his ruthless efficiency and iron-fisted rule.
I had fallen into his hands.
"You... you saved me?" I managed, my voice hoarse.
"You could say that," he said, stepping closer. The sheer height of him forced me to crane my neck to look up. His scent, a cold, sharp aroma of pine and winter air, enveloped me, making it hard to breathe.
His assistant stepped forward, holding out a folder and a pen. "Mr. Sinclair is offering you his protection," the assistant said in a clipped, formal tone. "In return, you are required to sign this service agreement."
I took the folder, my fingers trembling. The document was titled: Personal Attendant Service Agreement.
I scanned the clauses. For the duration of the agreement, I was to be Cyrus Sinclair's personal attendant, responsible for his daily needs. My food, lodging, and safety would be provided, but my personal freedom would be restricted. I was not to leave the manor without permission.
I looked up at Cyrus, searching his impassive face for any clue. Why was he doing this? A powerful Alpha King didn't need a Wolfless attendant.
A flicker of a memory, of a warm current flowing through me as I lay dying, of a man radiating an aura of pain... could my presence serve some purpose for him?
"Why me?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.
A faint smile touched Cyrus's lips. It held no warmth, only the predatory amusement of a cat with a mouse. "Because I saved your life. That makes it mine. Or would you prefer to go back to the Blackwood Pack? To your father, who was so eager to sell you off?"
His words hit their mark, a precise and painful strike. I had nowhere else to go. Jared and Carrie would be thrilled to see me disappear forever. Cornelius only saw me as a commodity.
Compared to them, this dangerous Alpha, who at least offered a roof over my head, seemed like the only viable option.
I bit the inside of my cheek, forcing myself to think practically. I had to survive. Survival was the first step to revenge.
"I'll sign," I said. I took the pen and signed my name at the bottom: Aria Whitmore.
The moment the ink dried, the mark on my neck burned, as if the contract had been sealed with more than just my signature.
Cyrus gave a curt nod, his eyes raking over me as if inspecting a new, interesting acquisition.
"Good," he said. "Liam will inform you of your duties. And remember your place. As my attendant, you do as you're told. You ask no questions."
He turned and left, his oppressive presence vanishing with him.
I leaned against the wall, my legs weak, staring at the agreement in my hand.
