Something good would never come out of this, I thought to myself.
"Sit," Dylan ordered.
I dropped my book bag and sat on the floor. There was no need to try and refuse. It would result in something worse for me.
The door opened and two guards came in with two food trays.
The aroma of the food drifted into my nostrils and my stomach grumbled again, making my face flush in embarrassment.
The guards bowed and went out afterward.
His eyes on me the whole while, he picked up a piece of bread and squeezed it in his fist then threw it on the floor.
"You can eat that," Dylan's cold voice rang through the room.
I stared at the ruined bread without moving. Alicia stood up and walked over to me; she raised her hand and landed a resounding slap on my face. She used all her might to slap me.
"How dare you disobey him?!" Alicia said.
I knew she was always looking for a way to punish me before, and the chance just presented itself.
My cheeks hurt like hell and I knew her handprint would be visible on my cheeks.
Tears welled up in my eyes; my body shook uncontrollably. With trembling hands, I picked up the bread and started eating.
Dylan let out an evil chuckle that sent a shiver down my spine. "Are you that hungry? Do you want another one? I will be generous enough to give you another bread."
This time, he stepped on the bread and threw it to me.
I ate it, too.
"Your tears makes it boring. You can leave now."
I almost glared at him, but I knew the consequences more than anybody. I tried to smile but couldn't.
"Good day, prince," I said, trembling slightly.
My feet felt heavy as I made my way out of the class.
The school was empty. All the students have already gone home. I am the only one still in school uniform.
I touched my cheeks and wondered what I would tell my mom happened. I knew she would be worried and I didn't want her to. I would have to lie again.
I normally hide the fact that Dylan bullies me. I didn't want her to worry.
My mother worked as a nurse in the palace and I knew there was no way I would be able to avoid her because she would be home already.
I took out my phone. I had missed five calls from Ava and one message from her.
My best friend: Neil insisted on taking me home. I'm sorry, I will come to your house in the evening. We going to paarrrrty!
I shoved my phone back into my pocket.
My mom was already waiting for me outside, looking down the street to check if she could spot me coming. A look of relief appeared in her eyes when she saw me.
"Why are you late again?"
I turned sideways; I didn't want her to notice my swollen cheek. But her gaze was sharp.
"What happened to your cheeks?"
I tried my best to hold back my tears; I forced out a smile. "It's nothing; two of my friends fought today. I tried to stop them, but I got hit in the process."
My mother gave me a doubtful look. It was clear that she didn't believe me.
"I'm serious, Mom. You know I'm a gentle girl and don't like fighting," I said with a slight giggle, trying to ease the tension. I held my stomach and rubbed it gently. "I'm hungry. What's for lunch?"
My mother shook her head, and we both entered the house. My mother gave me bread and soup and it immediately made me lose my appetite, but because I didn't want Mom to be worried, I forced myself to eat it and went to my room afterward. I applied the ointment my mother gave me on my swollen cheek.
I slumped on the bed and fell asleep immediately.
****
"SLEEPING BEAUTY, WAKE UP!."
I thought it was in my dream, but when the person continued to scream, I opened my eyes slowly.
"I thought you won't wake up until I find a prince charming to kiss you," Ava said with a giggle.
I yawned loudly and stretched my body. "How dare you disturb my sleep?" I said playfully, hitting her arm.
"Ouch," Ava pretended as if she was hurt, "I will get going then. Continue with your beauty sleep."
Ava wanted to stand up, but I pulled her back, and we both fell on the bed.
"Didn't you see my message? We are partying tonight," She reminded me and I shook my head immediately.
"I'm not wanted there. I'm not going."
"Please, please, pretty please," Ava pleaded, making puppy eyes at me.
I pinched her cheeks, and we both laughed.
"The place is gonna be fun. Trust me, you won't regret ever coming with me," Ava said as she removed the blanket from my body.
"I wondered why your mate still allows you to go to a club," I said as I got off the bed.
"He is also coming, and I can't stop enjoying my life just because I found my mate."
Ava is a year older than me. She found her mate, Neil, when she was eighteen, and now they live together.
Pretty neat, right? I doubted if my love story would be that neat.
