Chapter 8 No One Can Hurt My Wife

Lacey was stunned.

Did Callan truly care about her that much?

He had gotten lunch for her, tended to her injuries, and even used his own body to protect her from sulfuric acid. All of these memories came rushing back to her.

She realized he had been there for her so much, and she hadn't fully appreciated it.

Lacey felt her heart flutter, and she found herself clenching her fists without meaning to.

Adams gave Lacey a thoughtful look, said nothing more, and walked into Callan's ward.

Feeling a whirlwind of emotions, Lacey paused at the door, waiting for Adams to leave before she opened it.

As soon as he saw her, Callan, lying on the hospital bed, gestured for her to come over. "Come here."

His voice seemed to draw her in, and Lacey moved towards him, sitting quietly at the edge of the bed.

As soon as she sat down, Callan took out a burn ointment from under his pillow.

"What's that for?" Lacey asked, puzzled.

Instead of answering, Callan gently rolled up her sleeve and carefully applied the ointment to her wound.

Watching him be so thoughtful and attentive, Lacey's heart skipped a beat and then started racing.

She wanted to throw herself into the arms of the man in front of her, but a voice deep inside her reminded her that Callan's heart belonged to Sylvia.

Yes, most women were creatures prone to wishful thinking. Just a bit of extra attention from a man could make them believe he had feelings for them.

A fleeting look of sadness crossed Lacey's eyes.

She composed herself and asked with a concerned look, "Callan, why are you doing all this for me?"

Callan looked into Lacey's eyes, his lips curling into a subtle smile. His eyes were gentle, yet his voice was firm. "No one else is allowed to hurt my woman!"

Lacey remained silent, her gaze fixed on the floor. Her eyes gave away nothing about what she was thinking.

After a bit, she turned to look at Callan and whispered, "What about Sylvia?"

Callan's expression changed, his lips tightening.

Why did she bring up Sylvia now, of all times?

Lacey had a knack for ruining the mood.

Callan did not answer. Lacey's eyes briefly showed a hint of sadness, and she pulled her wrist away from him.

"Can't you just stay still?" Callan reached out and pulled her back.

He used more force than necessary, and Lacey stumbled into his arms, caught off guard by the sudden movement.

She looked up at him, surprised, while they were so close.

Their eyes locked. In that brief pause, it was like a flurry of sparks were flying, touching the depths of their hearts.

Callan's expression softened.

The sound of knocking on the door came, which broke the atmosphere between them.

Lacey quickly pushed Callan away and got up from the bed's edge.

Her cheeks were slightly flushed, her heart racing, and she avoided Callan's gaze.

"Callan, why are you in the hospital?" Dolores' voice came from outside the room.

Sylvia followed behind her.

Dolores' mood soured upon seeing Lacey. She gave Lacey a disdainful look, then turned her attention to Callan.

"Lacey is here too! What a coincidence!" Sylvia, eyes hiding malice, approached Lacey with a smile, acting as if she owned the place.

Lacey looked at the bandage on Sylvia's forehead and said with a hint of sarcasm in her voice, "I'm not surprised to be here, but why are you wandering around with such a bad injury?"

She put extra emphasis on the words "such a bad injury," her voice dripping with irony.

Sylvia couldn't ignore the sarcasm and her face clouded over with annoyance.

Already upset with Lacey for being the cause of Callan's injury, Dolores got even angrier when she heard Lacey's words to Sylvia.

"Lacey, you're the reason Callan got hurt; you bring bad luck. Why do you even stay here?" Dolores snapped with irritation.

Lacey was scolded, and Sylvia seemed pleased, but because Callan was there, she played the peacemaker.

She approached Dolores, pretending to be diplomatic. "Please, don't blame Lacey. It isn't her fault. I'm just concerned about Callan. He's been caught up in something terrible too."

Her words were subtly aimed at putting Lacey in a bad light.

Lacey was about to respond, but Callan spoke up first.

"The person who took Lacey is one of your fans." He looked at Sylvia, his tone showing his displeasure.

Sylvia pressed her lips together, looking hurt. Her eyes welled up as she said, "I'm sorry, Callan. I had no idea my fans would do such a thing."

After saying this, she glanced quickly at Lacey and then turned her attention to Callan, her eyes filled with concern. "This situation involves me too. I want to stay in the hospital to look after you, to make up for what my fan did, okay?"

"What a sweet girl Sylvia is, not like Lacey, who only causes problems," Dolores said, praising Sylvia with a smile.

She took Sylvia's hand, turned to Callan, and added, "If Lacey hadn't hurt Sylvia, Sylvia wouldn't have missed that important event, and you wouldn't have been injured, Callan. It's all Lacey's fault."

Watching the two team up against her, Lacey couldn't hold back any longer. She pulled out her phone and played the recording she had made earlier.

They listened to the doctor's voice confirming that Sylvia's injury had healed a while ago.

Lacey looked at Sylvia with a mocking sneer. "A small injury that's already better, and you're making it sound like it could have disfigured you and made you miss your event? Do your fans know how easily you lie?"
