Chapter 4 Three

***Two Months Later***

Saying goodbye to Lilian was more complicated than I had anticipated. For the last two months, I had tried to make the transition as easy as possible, but we always ended up in tears no matter how I approached the situation.

Yadhira had become distant. I couldn't place my finger on it, but I had a feeling in the pit of my stomach that she was hiding something from me.

The second most challenging day of my life had finally arrived: the day I had to leave for Whimsic. Deep down, I was so happy to finally be on my own, but as I drove down the interstate, I felt more alone than ever. A single tear fell as I recalled Lilian's last words.

(Flashback)

"I'm going to miss you, Lil," I told her as she walked me to the car. Yadhira said goodbye before she left the store, leaving Lilian and me alone.

"I'm going to miss you more," Lilian replied as we stopped next to the driver's side door.

"You're coming to visit me during all your breaks?" Lilian asked as I opened the car door and tossed my purse inside.

"Even if I'm busy, I'll make sure to make it happen," I promised.

Lilian gave me a small smile. "There's something I need to tell you," she said.

"What is it?" I asked, tilting my head to one side.

"I know about your parents," she said, pausing momentarily. "I've known about it for a long time."

"Y-you know? Why didn't you say anything?" I asked.

"Given that mom intended to keep it from me and I understood the impact it had on you. I decided to feign ignorance, hoping it would provide you with the resolution you sought," Lilian whispered softly.

"I hate lying to you," I told her.

"Yeah, I know, but I also understand the reasons. I want you to know that no matter what, I always thought of you as my blood sister," Lillian said as tears fell from her eyes.

"And you have always been mine," I told her, wrapping my arms around her shoulders and embracing her.

She whispered before stepping out of our embrace, "You can always find your way back to the light. I believe in you."

I glanced at her momentarily in confusion as to why she had said the exact words as Yadhira. I smiled at her as I got into the car and watched Lilian step back and wave goodbye. I watched her as I drove the car down the driveway and drove away, feeling a bittersweet mix of emotions.

(End of Flashback)

I still had five hours to go before I reached Whimsic. Despite my excitement, I was scared as hell. Being alone was not the problem; I feared the unknown. I worried I would fail. After working so hard for so long, I started setting high standards for myself. I was also concerned that I would find no one who I could talk to or relate to.

Lilian was great, but there were things I couldn't tell her, like the things that happened in the night. There were times I saw shadows leaning towards me or following me. I would pick up on sounds emanating from my neighbors' houses on different occasions, but the latest incident had a distinct quality. An internal voice seemed to alert me, making me aware of the existence of something sinister and ominous.

something inside my head was telling me that something dark was lingering.

I wanted to discuss this with Yadhira, but she was always at work. As I shook my head, I decided to push the thoughts to the depths of my mind. To drown out my thoughts, I turned up the radio and listened to the soft classical melody of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. I felt my heart swell as I listened to the beauty of the music. I was thankful for the peace it brought me and the chance to take a break from my thoughts.

After five hours, I finally reached the gates leading to Whimsic Law School. I had printed out my acceptance letter with clear instructions on where my dorm was. As I approached the black iron gate, I stopped to push the intercom and waited for a response.

A gold-colored letter V caught my attention on the gate as I waited.

"Doesn't seem like that would be long there," I said aloud.

"We get that quite frequently. How can I help?" A woman's voice rang over the intercom.

"Oh umm, I'm Alassandra Khairi. I am here to check in," I responded, face-palming myself for making that comment.

"Ah yes, Ms. Khairi, we have been expecting you. Go through the gate and drive straight until you see the big manor at the end. Park anywhere you want and hurry inside. Orientation starts in ten minutes. Welcome to Whimsic Law School," she said.

"Thanks," I replied as I proceeded down the driveway. The driveway was long and framed by tall trees on either side. They enveloped the road in a breathtaking scene as the trees, swaying in sync with the gentle breeze, formed a majestic canopy overhead. The sunlight filtering through the intricate network of branches cast a captivating, dappled glow that illuminated the entire road.

As I neared the end of the driveway, the majestic manor came into view.

A giant banner hung over the entrance that read, "Welcome Freshmen." As I rounded the driveway, I drove towards the parking lot, parked the car, and hopped out, grabbing only my keys and backpack. I looked around and saw other students milling about, some in groups and others alone. I felt nervous and excited as I walked towards the entrance.

As I walked in, I felt a chill run through me. I shook it off as I knew it was fall and chilly outside. Since I did not know where I was going, I stopped to grab a school map, and then I went to the Freshman Orientation room and sat.

After a few moments, the lights dimmed, and a loud, deep, harmonious voice rang through the loudspeakers.

"Welcome to Whimsic Law School." I looked up and saw who was the most handsome man I had ever laid eyes on.
