Chapter 4 4

Raul pops a handful of popcorn into his mouth and stretches, we're at work, but we've taken a break, after accepting Newman's proposal I haven't received any work, I feel a bit out of place, watching everyone do their jobs while I just watch them is a bit disheartening.

The working environment has improved, the boys no longer live with the pressure of being fired by Mr. Tomy and no longer have to work overtime for no pay, they have felt better with the changes Newman has made.

I have heard that they are also going to remodel some things, the workers will come to work next week, I have heard some details of the changes they want to make, I have not had the opportunity to spend much time with our new boss, but he does not seem to be a bad person, I like the way he handles things and the way he usually deals with others.

"Melanie, do you have the new working hours for our department? -asks one of the new girls, but I shake my head."

"I don't have that information, I'll have to talk to the boss to get the forms, but don't worry, I'll try to get it as fast as I can."

I give her a tight-mouthed smile and she leaves, Raul looks at me with raised eyebrows and shrugs.

"I'm pretty sure he made a bad gesture when he turned around."

"Why do you say that? -I ask, taking popcorn from his bag."

"She didn't seem nice and made gestures when you've been telling her that, since you became a supervisor you are seen as the only one who doesn't work but gets benefits."

"Yes, I work, except that Newman hasn't had many meetings here and he hasn't given me much to deal with."

"That man only hired you because he found you attractive."

"I'd like to believe what you believe, but I know it doesn't work that way."

"And why not? You are a beautiful and independent woman."

"I have to support my daughter, pay the rent and other things I haven't taken care of yet, I assure you he won't want to be with a woman like me, I don't even know why we're talking about it, it's absurd!"

"I'm just telling you what I think."

He keeps eating and makes me a bit anxious, I won't pay attention to Raul's ideas, if I do I'll probably fill my head with things that aren't real, I don't want to waste my time or look like a complete idiot.

My friend is still eating and I sit down next to him, the whole atmosphere is quiet until Newman comes in and stares at everything around him, he hasn't come alone, he has come with a man in a suit and dark sunglasses, he is middle aged, he doesn't look much older than Newman.

My boss's gaze is immediately on me, he's annoyed, I can tell by the way he's frowning and everything seems to be bothering him. Newman rushes over to me and grabs my arm, he doesn't do it roughly, but you can tell I've done everything I shouldn't have done.

"Let's talk in the office."

"Yes, sir."

Raul's eyes widen when he sees the way he grabs me and he immediately gets up to stand in front of Newman.

"You don't have the right to grab Melanie like that, please let her go."

"Do as the young man says," says the stranger. Let the girl go."

My boss looks at both of them and then looks at his hand around my arm, everyone is looking at us, the anger and rage seems to have subsided a little.

"I'll be back in a moment, Adrik." Adrik nods and we head back to his office in silence.

I hate silence, I have never liked to feel that a whole room is silent or that I am going to be scolded and I have to remain silent, it is one of the things I hate the most.

We enter the office and I notice the minimal changes he has made.

"Mr Newman, I hope you're not too upset with me to fire me."

"I'm sorry I grabbed you like that in front of all the employees."

I am standing in front of him, we are not a long distance apart, he has leaned back from his desk and I have been standing a bit away from his body, but not too far.

"Don't worry, but I hope it won't happen again."

"I won't make the same mistake twice, but I don't want to come in and make the whole company look a mess, I've left you as supervisor, do your job well."

He stands up and we are inches apart.

If he comes any closer, he can kiss me, and I remember what Raul said to me just now, and my skin crawls.

"I don't want any trouble in my company, I think I've told you that before," he says in a husky, seductive voice, Newman whispers in my ear, his fingers start to run up and down my arm, and I close my eyes. Be good, Melanie.

"I'm not misbehaving," I say with what little breath I have.

"Bad actions have consequences, I don't think you want to deal with them."

He breaks away from me and grins from ear to ear.

For a moment I thought he was going to kiss me, I thought his beautiful lips would be on mine and I couldn't hold back, I feel quite confused about everything that's going on, but millionaires are like that, they think they have the power to do whatever they want with the women they sleep with.

He kisses my cheek and opens the door to his office.

"You can go, tell Adrik to come in."

I watch him still without moving.

"Come on, move," he continues, noticing my silence. "Remember to tidy up."

I nod and walk away without looking back.
