Chapter 7 A Dress From Her Husband

Had Elias also been stood up by someone?

Scarlett felt an unexplainable sense of guilt. For a moment, she almost thought that the person who had stood Elias up was herself.

She had been late the previous night and missed her appointment with her husband. At that time, he must have been as angry as Elias was now. Maybe that was why he had blocked her.

As she pondered this, Scarlett felt even more remorse for her husband, whom she had never met. Although Elias wasn't angry with her, she couldn't help but want to clarify things.

"Mr. Roberts, please don't be too upset. They might have encountered some difficulties. There could be a misunderstanding."

A misunderstanding? Elias sneered inwardly.

Though he had never met his nominal wife, he had a good understanding of her character.

She was money-hungry and unreliable when it came to keeping promises. How could there be a misunderstanding?

Elias considered refuting Scarlett, but when he looked into her sincere eyes, he found himself unable to speak out his frustrations.

He didn't want to vent his anger on innocent people, neither on Zayne nor on Scarlett.

Elias took a deep breath to calm himself. He glanced at Zayne, who was now in Scarlett's arms, and quietly said, "Take Zayne for a walk."

Scarlett nodded and led Zayne to the garden, where they played on the swing.

Soon, Zayne's initial fear faded away, replaced by his fascination with the blooming flowers in the garden. He picked a daisy and, standing on tiptoe, tucked it behind Scarlett's ear.

Scarlett was pleasantly surprised. She smiled at the young boy and said, "Thank you, Zayne."

Under the golden sunlight, her smile radiated warmth and tenderness.

Elias witnessed this heartwarming scene as soon as he entered the garden. His heart felt a gentle tug, and he had no desire to interrupt them.

After lingering in the garden for a long time, Scarlett finally noticed him. "Mr. Roberts? What are you doing here?"

Zayne also spotted Elias. He ran toward his father with his usual happiness, but then seemed to have second thoughts. He halted and carefully observed Elias' expression for a moment before cautiously approaching him and taking his hand.

Elias felt even more guilty seeing that his son was apprehensive but still sought his closeness. He reached out to gently touch Zayne's cheek in reassurance.

Observing Elias and Zayne finally reconnecting, Scarlett breathed a sigh of relief. After some hesitation, she mustered the courage to say, "Mr. Roberts, perhaps you should consider sharing your feelings. Keeping too much inside isn't good for your well-being, and your silence might lead to misunderstandings, especially with someone as sensitive as Zayne. He's so attached to you that your mood can easily affect him."

Elias was taken aback. Even Jude, who had worked for him for many years, had never spoken to him like this.

He didn't expect Scarlett, whom he had known for a relatively short time, to be so frank with him.

Yet, he didn't hate this feeling.

"I'll handle it. Don't worry. It won't happen again," Elias replied in a soft tone.

Perhaps, as Scarlett suggested, his wife hadn't shown up at the restaurant the previous night due to an emergency.

For the sake of Scarlett and Zayne, he decided to give his wife another chance.

After her shift, Scarlett picked up Joan from the hospital and returned home. The doctor had advised that with a few days of rest and careful leg usage management, Joan would recover soon.

Not long after Scarlett and Joan arrived home, the doorbell rang.

"Grandma, please rest first. I'll see who's at the door," Scarlett said.

She stood up and walked to the door. Upon opening it, she found a man in a suit standing there, holding a box. As soon as he saw Scarlett, he bowed respectfully and extended the box to her. "Mrs. Roberts, this is the dress Mr. Roberts has prepared for you. He hopes you can accompany him as his plus-one to the charity gala in two days."

Scarlett furrowed her brow and didn't take the box. Despite her guilt, she had no desire for further contact with her husband. She replied coldly, "Please tell him that we are getting a divorce. If he needs a plus-one, he can take anyone else to the gala. It's not my concern. Please return the dress."

Just then, Joan's voice came from behind. "Scarlett, who is it?"

When Joan came over and saw the man, she appeared quite perplexed.

The man turned his respectful gaze toward Joan and said, "Mrs. Wallace, I'm here to deliver a dress for Mrs. Roberts."

Joan's eyes lit up with excitement. "Scarlett, are you attending a party?"

"I won't be going," Scarlett replied, shaking her head.

Joan's tone became firm. "No, you must go. Take the dress. Don't worry about me. Dress up and enjoy yourself at the party."

Fearful that her refusal might lead Joan to overthink the situation, Scarlett accepted the dress and said to the man, "I'll attend the event. Thank you."

The man visibly relaxed, nodded at them, and left.

On the day of the gala, Scarlett donned the dress her husband had provided and arrived at the hotel where the event was being held.

Upon entering the grand hall, she sensed that many guests were casting frequent glances in her direction.

Not wanting to draw more attention to herself, she quickly found a quiet corner and took a seat.

She retrieved her phone from her purse and checked for messages. Finding none, she couldn't help but sigh.

Her husband had invited her to the gala, yet he hadn't made any contact with her. It seemed he didn't really need her as his plus-one.

Scarlett didn't dwell on it too much. She viewed it as a night to unwind and decided to enjoy herself.

As she stashed her phone away, a commotion broke out in the crowd. Scarlett instinctively turned to look and was captivated by a tall, striking figure not far away.

It wasn't just his height and handsome appearance that drew her attention; it was someone she recognized.

Scarlett approached and stood behind the man, cautiously uttering, "Mr. Roberts?"

Hearing her voice, Elias spun around, his surprise evident. Why was she here?

Scarlett was clad in a lilac slip dress, the silk material enhancing her air of grace and elegance. Her long, dark hair cascaded over her shoulder, accentuating her delicate and enchanting features.

Elias couldn't help but be slightly astonished by Scarlett's attire tonight. She appeared entirely different from her usual self.

"Why are you here?"

Scarlett replied, "I'm here with my husband."

Elias, upon hearing that she was married, experienced a mixture of emotions. He suppressed these complex feelings and asked, "Is it the man who was with you at the bar that day?"
