Chapter 6 Accident

Scarlett was taken aback by Elias' offer. She politely declined, saying, "Thank you, Mr. Roberts, but I have a personal matter to attend to. I've already booked a cab."

Upon hearing that she had a personal matter, Elias immediately thought of Justin. Assuming she was meeting her boyfriend, he didn't press further.

Scarlett got into the waiting cab and headed to Cinderella Restaurant.

During the ride, she received an unexpected call from an unknown number.

"Is this Scarlett Wallace? Your grandmother has had a fall. She's at Mercy Hospital. Please come as soon as possible."

Grandma had a fall?!

A heavy, invisible hand seemed to grip Scarlett's heart, causing her intense distress. Her expression changed instantly. She urgently told the driver, "Sir, please take me to Mercy Hospital right away!"

The driver swiftly maneuvered the car and said, "No problem."

After getting out of the car, Scarlett immediately rushed to the ward.

As soon as she saw her grandmother, Joan Wallace, lying in the bed, her eyes welled up with tears. She asked anxiously, "Grandma, are you in pain? What did the doctor say? Is it bad? Will there be any lasting effects?"

Joan waved her hand dismissively and said casually, "I'm fine, dear. Why are you crying? It was just a minor accident. The doctor said I'll recover with two days of rest."

"I'll double-check with the doctor," Scarlett insisted, still worried.

As she got up to leave, Joan smiled and added, "By the way, your father and stepmother were here earlier. They were delighted to hear you were coming. They said they'd wait for you outside."

Scarlett's heart sank at Joan's words.

Her father and stepmother had ulterior motives, she was sure of it. She did not believe they were here out of concern!

Scarlett left the ward and quietly closed the door behind her.

As expected, she didn't need to look far for them. When she turned around, her father, Arion Wallace, and her stepmother, Brynn Wallace, were waiting nearby.

Scarlett glanced at them with indifference. She had no intention of exchanging pleasantries and was about to walk away.

However, Brynn caught up with Scarlett, grabbing her wrist and scolding, "Hey, are you blind? You can't even greet your parents?"

Scarlett pulled her wrist free from Brynn's grasp, looked at Arion, and uttered a cold, "Hello, Dad."

Though Arion appeared displeased, he merely nodded slightly.

Then Scarlett turned her gaze squarely on Brynn, turned around, and began to leave.

Brynn wore a sour expression and snapped, "You ungrateful girl!"

With that, she raised her hand, seemingly intent on slapping Scarlett.

Arion quickly intervened, his brows furrowing. "We're in a hospital! Don't make a scene!"

Scarlett looked away, showing no reaction.

Reluctant, Brynn withdrew her hand and shot Scarlett a furious look. She couldn't stand the arrogance in Scarlett's eyes. Crossing her arms, she sneered, "You've grown even more arrogant since marrying a rich guy. You have money to care for your grandmother, but when your sister needs money to enter the showbiz, you won't give her a dime. You've even taken your grandmother away, keeping us from seeing her. How ungrateful!"

Hearing these accusations, Scarlett couldn't help but scoff coldly.

Brynn was incensed. "What's so funny?"

Scarlett regarded her coldly. "I'm laughing at the fact that if you hadn't given up on Grandma's treatment back then, I wouldn't have had to take her away. You call me ungrateful, but if you were truly grateful, why didn't you cover Grandma's medical expenses?"

A year ago, Joan had been seriously ill, requiring a substantial sum for her treatment.

However, Scarlett's parents had chosen to forego treatment, regardless of Joan's life.

If not for the medical bills, Scarlett wouldn't have married into the Roberts family.

Yet here they were, having the audacity to accuse her of ingratitude. It was beyond absurd!

Scarlett continued firmly, "In any case, don't think for a moment that you can take a single penny from me today!"

Brynn was livid, her face turning crimson. Arion stepped in and said kindly to Scarlett, "Scarlett, how about this? We don't want to argue with you any longer. Just bring your husband to meet us."

"My husband?" Scarlett frowned.

Arion smiled gently, but there was a calculating glint in his eyes. "He's wealthy and influential. I think arranging a job for your sister in a major company would be a piece of cake for him. That way, we won't have to spend any money. Everyone can be happy! We're family, after all. Why should we quarrel in the hospital? You grandma wouldn't appreciate that."

Hearing this, Scarlett glanced around at the curious onlookers and chose to remain silent.

Indeed, continuing the argument here would only sadden Joan if she heard it.

With a sigh, Scarlett pretended to give in. "Fine, I'll give it a try."

Of course, she had no intention of actually helping them. The next time they inquired, she would tell them she had divorced her husband. That would surely infuriate them.

After deflecting these two individuals, Scarlett went to the doctor's office to inquire about Joan's condition.

The doctor explained that Joan's age was catching up with her, making her unsteady on her feet. She needed ample rest and minimal stress.

Scarlett noted the doctor's advice attentively.

Once she had dealt with this matter, she suddenly remembered her appointment.

She said her farewells to Joan and hurried to the restaurant. On the way, she took out her phone and wanted to call her husband, only to find that it was out of power.

However, upon arrival, she found the restaurant had closed.

Scarlett returned to the hospital to charge her phone. Upon turning it on, she was greeted by a slew of missed calls, all from her husband.

Feeling guilty, she immediately tried calling him back, pondering how to explain.

But the call didn't go through. Scarlett realized that she had been blocked.

Scarlett felt deeply remorseful but was at a loss, as she had no other means to contact him.

She decided to wait a few days, allowing him time to cool down. Then she would seek Ella's assistance to contact him.

At that point, she could explain and offer her sincere apologies.

The following day, when Scarlett entered Boreal Villa, she sensed a somber atmosphere.

She cast a puzzled look at Elias, who sat on the couch with a stern expression, then turned to Jude for an explanation.

Just as Jude was about to speak, Zayne, who was huddled in a corner of the living room, rushed over and clung to Scarlett. His timid eyes focused on Elias, and his small hands gripped Scarlett's clothes tightly, displaying a sense of helplessness.

Scarlett couldn't help but inquire, "Mr. Roberts, did something happen with Zayne? Why do you seem so upset?"

Elias realized that he had frightened Zayne, but his frustration and anxiety persisted. He replied in a flat tone, "It's unrelated to Zayne."

Jude clarified, "Mr. Roberts is upset because he was stood up yesterday. Miss Wallace, please don't take it personally."
